>> good perspective there, elizabeth. thanks so much. david, turning to you now, we know there have already been restrictions implemented from some flights traveling to and from some countries in south africa. what can you tell us more about that? >> well, jessica, just hours after south african scientists came public, very soon after noticing this variant in genomic studies and pcr tests, the united kingdom was first out the gate. they banned effectively through a red list, through several countries in the southern african region from traveling to the united kingdom and citizens will have to be in mandatory quarantine that was very quickly enforced ban which the south african government said seemed quite premature. but since then, other countries have followed suit, countries within the european union, several countries in asia have also effectively banned travelers from the southern africa region to their shores. and now the africa cdc has come out quite strongly saying they don't recommend bans that in this ir their words had limited

what are these safety concerns, elizabeth? >> so, brianna, when the fda advisers meet one week from today to look at merck's anti-viral pill, they'll be looking at efficacy and safety. i think there's going to be more discussion about safety. that's really because the efficacy is, as one doctor put it to me, quite dramatic. let's look at efficacy, then we'll talk about the safety in a sec. 762 participants, early stage covid, first five days of symptom onset. the folks with the placebo, 45 were hospitalized and nine died over the course of the next month. folks who got the drug, the ones who were lucky enough to get the drug, only 28 of them were hospitalized and none of them died. those are very, very dramatic results. here's the issue, this pill uses a somewhat uncommon mechanism. it actually goes into the virus' rna and stops it from replicating. that's good. you see the results that merck is reporting. however, there are concerns about off target effects. off target meaning maybe it might affect something in the human body

cnn's elizabeth cohen joining us with more. elizabeth, we were hoping this was of. but now we are facing the prospect of another surge here. >> reporter: well, that we're seeing really, brianna, is numbers going up and down. right now we are in the up stage. we're hoping they go down. but unfortunately it doesn't look great because of the time of year we're in. it's getting colder, people are spending more time indoors. holidays are coming up, people will travel and gather together. when you look at this map of the united states, what we want to see is a lot of green. we want to see all green. green means the numbers are going down. yellow means they're stable. red means they're going up. dark red means they are going up swiftly. that is 22 states in red. 22 states where the rates are going up. so measures need to be put in place. are people going to be good about masking? are they going to be did about social distancing? are unvaccinated people finally going to get vaccinated? that will have to happen given that we are going into colder weather and into the holiday

elizabeth, what more do we know about this new variant? >> jessica, to put it in some perspective, variants have come and gone throughout this entire pandemic. most of them don't really mean anything. they're not that different from what we've seen before. but every so often there's one that years its ugly head and takes over the planet. the delta variant would of course be the one that would be top of mind in that category. we don't know which category this new one is going to fall into. will it sort of peter out? it affects countries in and around south africa? will it take to the world stage? here's what we know so far. it doesn't even have a name yet, one of those greek letters, because it's not officially a variant of concern or interest, so it's called b.1.1.529. the problem is it more than 30 mutations in the spike protein. that's what researchers say. it's an important part of the virus, how it does its work to get into our cells. the vaccine is designed to work on the spike protein. if there are too many variations in that protein

elizabeth cohen joins us live. what jumps out at you from this new data. >> really, jake, what jumps out at me is that they stopped the trial early. an independent board of experts monitoring the trial noticed that people taking the drug were doing so much better than people in the study who were given a placebo they said, hey, we need to stop this. it's called stopping for benefit and we need to give pfizer the chance to apply now or soon to the fda for emergency use authorization. so let's take a look at the data that made this monitoring board say hey, this is looking so good. let's stop this trial now. so there were about 775 patients in this trial. these folks had very early covid. within three days of the first -- of having the first symptoms of covid. and the folks who received a placebo, which is a pill that does nothing, 27 of them ended up in the hospital over time and 7 of them died from covid. those who received the pill, though, only 3 of them ended up in the hospital and none of them end up dying. and

elizabeth cohen joins us now. elizabeth, obviously we're still waiting to get a lot of details here. there have been some variants in the past where the concern was warranted, somewhere it wasn't. what are you hearing so far? >> you know, kaitlan, i'm glad you put it that way because there have been many variants and many mutations we don't even hear about because there are so many of them. some of them kind of peter out and end up being nothing and other ones literally take over the planet, like the delta variant. we don't know which one this will be. but there are reasons to be concerned. so let's take a look at what we do know about this variant. so it is called b 11529. it does not have a great ek let. it is more than 30 mutations in the spike protein. that's not good. the spike protein is how the virus does its work. and the vaccine is designed to fight the spike protein. so if it has too many mutations that are in -- of a particular kind, that could be bad news for the vaccine or for natural infection. uk, g

joining us to discuss, elizabeth cohen. elizabeth, what specifically is the advisory committee looking at today? >> erica, what they're going to look at is safety and efficacy data. we have been told this vaccine and the clinical trial for children ages 5 to 11 was very safe. let's take a look. let's talk a bit about the efficacy, which is shown to be about 91% effective at keeping kids from getting sick with covid-19. now, interestingly, children in this clinical trial, they were actually not given the full dose that adolescents and adults have been getting, instead they were given about -- they were given one-third of the dose. now, if this committee and as you mentioned these -- this committee of advisers they're expected to sign off on this, if they sign off on this, cdc director dr. rochelle walensky, she could act pretty quickly. she has acted quite quickly once these recommendations are made. we may even get a signoff from her possibly as soon as this evening. so that means the shots could be going into arms, little

senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen is following owl this. where were we in terms of the recommendation and where are we now? >> reporter: so, jim, i think what's going on here is that the biden administration is trying to make things clear, make simplicity out of what has really been quite chaotic. when boosters were approved for pfizer in september, authorized, i should say, in september, they were authorized for people of certain ages, who had certain illnesses. it got very complex. at the end of the day, when you ticked off all those boxes, about upwards of 89% of people qualified for boosters as long as they were at least six months past their pfizer or moderna second shot. i think what they're trying to do is clarify it. so pfizer has applied to say, look, anyone 18 and older could get a booster. that's what pfizer is applied for authorization for, a booster that anyone could get ages 18 and older. if this gets authorized, i think there will be clarity. now, some will tell you they don't like that. they think dr. paul offit has called i

senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen has more. >> christine, laura, on tuesday vaccine experts who are advisers to the cdc will be meeting to talk about pfizer vaccine for children ages 5 to 11. the fda has given it the green light. external advisers to the fda also given it the green light. we'll see what the cdc advice advisers have to say. after that the head of the cdc rochelle walensky will weigh in and then it will be final. let's take a look at what a clinical trial showed when they tried the vaccine out on small children. >>> pfizer says that its clinical trial shows the vaccine is 91% effective against symptomatic covid-19. in other words, 91% effective at protecting children ages 5 to 11 from getting sick with covid-19. what pfizer did is they gave about 1300 children the vaccine and three of them over time became sick with covid-19. now, they gave a smaller number of children 663 of them a placebo, a shot of saline that does nothing, and 16 of them became sick with covid-19. so you can see they gave the placebo to a smaller number of children, but a larger number, 16

elizabeth cohen is joining me live. families across the country are about to take off their masks, eating dinner a large group maybe for the first time since the pandemic. so what are you seeing in the new case numbers? >> so many times during the pandemic we've seen numbers go down and we all sort of feel the sense of relief and we think that maybe this is it, maybe this pandemic is finally ending. but let me show you what is going on. if you take a look at this graph, you can see the last spring numbers were starting to doi down and then you see the huge surge in the middle, that was the delta variant doing its work over the summer and fall. and now you see the numbers coming back up again unfortunately. they went up, and then down, and now they are coming back up again all the way to the right side of that graph. resulting in this. you can see that most of the country here is in red. that means high levels of community transmission. and i want to talk about how quickly this has happened. let's take a look at a map of

cnn medical correspondent elizabeth cohen has been following. we're hearing 11 residents and a staff member still in isolation. i wonder, vaccination, we know, gives you an enormous amount of protection, but how protected are these folks proving to be in the midst of this outbreak? >> jim, the issue i think is going on here is that the nursing home hasn't said, but i think we can safely assume the nursing home residents and the staff probably too were vaccinated pretty early on in the pandemic. january, february, march, sometime in that time frame because that's when they were supposed to be vaccinated was early on in the vaccine rollout. by then, guess what happens, we know that immunity wanes from the vaccine. let's look at the particulars here again. so there have been 89 cases among residents and staff in this outbreak at this connecticut nursing home. many of them fully vaccinated. eight of those people have died. we have learned from the nursing home that nobody here had received a booster because it was too soon. the outbreak started, the

. >> and elizabeth cohen is here. tell us what it means. >> we can remember that back around the middle of august, president biden said that boosters for everyone and now, well, that is what it looks like we're on the road to that happening. if you remember in september, pfizer received authorization to have boosters, but only for certain people, for people over 65, for people with underlying medical conditions. and while that was a good hefty percentage of americans, it wasn't everybody. so now what will happen if the fda give as green light to this is that anyone over the age of 18 will be eligible to get a booster. and it will be interesting to see will the cdc say that everyone is eligible but we really only want to encourage specifically certain people should get boosters. it will be interesting if they put sort of people in different categories. but at the end of the day, it will be if this passes anyone over age 18 will be eligible to get a booster of course six months after their second shot of their pfizer co

buckingham palace says that queen elizabeth ii won't make a public appearance this morning for uk remembrance day ceremonies as originally planned. it was to be the monarch's first public appearance since doctors advised her to rest following a one-night stay in hospital last month. cnn's royal correspondent, max foster joins me now from london. war we are hearing from the palace about this last-minute cancellation. is it at all related to the hospitalization last month? >> reporter: according to a source, no, it's not related to the reason she was signed off work recently. she had a -- she sprained her back, we're told. a lot of attention being paid to this, not just pabecause she's been out of action, but this was the one occasion that we were expecting to see her. there was going to be a lot of focus on the imagery to see how well she is. and we're not going to get that opportunity now. but the palace saying it's not related to the issues that she may have had previously. we only found out in the last our or so. and it is a surprise -- it would be a surprise in normal times, but she wouldn

. >> joining us now senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen. a lot of interest in this story given how close jen psaki is to the president every day. so walk us through what we know. >> reporter: erica, the question on everyone's mind, is it possible that jen psaki could have infected president biden? when we spoke to experts, they said it would be virtually impossible. first of all, keep in mind, yesterday he took a covid it is as part of his travel into the united kingdom and it was negative. so there's the first of all. here's the second of all. let's look at the time line and you'll see what i mean. on tuesday of last week, that was the last time that psaki and biden were together. they were outside. they were six feet apart. they were wearing masks. the next day, jen psaki started her quarantine because she said members of her family tested positive. and then she tested negative that day and the next day, all the way until october 30th. it wasn't until yesterday that she tested positive. so the chance that she could have, you know, been po

cnn's elizabeth cohen joins us. elizabeth, it was a couple of months ago now that an fda committee shot down a similar request. so what's really changed here, and how soon could a decision come? >> reporter: you know, ana, a decision come really in a month or two if we look at past fda decisions for emergency use th authorization. and what's changed is this data i'm about to tell you a also a shift change on what boosters are supposed to do, what their purpose is. but first let's take a look at what pfizer is requesting. as you mentioned, ana, currently only certain people are eligible to get boosters. people over age 65, people with certain health conditions, people in certain situations like health care workers. and that's a big group. 75% of u.s. adults are overweight, but still it's not everyone. so pfizer's request is boosters for everyone 18 and older. and they say their request is based on this data. they've not given a lot of details. they say they will later, but let's take a look at what they have said. th

cnn's elizabeth cohen has more on this new reporting this morning. this is -- this is just bad news. >> it is. it is a terrible side effect of the pandemic. i think when we were in the mitts midst of it, we were so busy thinking about covid, as we should have been, but people were missing what was happening because people weren't get something routine and nonroutine screenings. let's look at this data, it looks at ct scans for cancer screening. and what they found was that for march to may they went down 82%. and may to november, when things were getting a little bit better, they were down still, but only by 12%. what went up during this period of time was cancer screenings, cancer ct scans from the emergency room, those went up 33%. that's not good. you shouldn't be doing cancer screenings in the emergency rooms. that's not the ideal place to do them. it likely means people are having symptoms and that's why they needed to have the screenings. so it is hard to sort of get things back up and rolling, but that's where the effort is to get these screen

. >>> joining us now is cnn senior medical continue elizabeth cohn, this sounds significant, what do we know about this clinical trial? >> alisyn, it is significant. what's also significant is a pill by merck, an antiviral where results were announced a couple of weeks ago. these could be a game changer once people get covid. it's best to be vaccinated and not get covid. if you do get covid, in the future there will be an antiviral pill, this one or the one from merck or possibly both. let's look at the pfizer clinical trial. they took 775 people with early covid, within three days of symptom on set, and the folks who they gave a placebo to, half the group got a placebo, a bill that does nothing, 27 of them ended up in the hospital over time, and 7 of them died. the folks who received the real pill, the real antiviral pill, three of them ended up in the hospital, and none of them died. that is quite notable. there were no side effects detected, of course this is a small group of people, 775. there's going to be questions about what happens when you give it to a larger group of people

elizabeth cohen joins us now more. walk us through that, people often see headlines, wait a second how broad is this. what does the data tell us? >> we have to think of the outbreak in the united states, it's sort of a bunch of mini outbreaks because the united states is still huge. the problem here, jim, is that we're seeing more and more states with cases going up instead of down. about a month ago october 21st, take a look at this map. you will see one state, one state, maine, up in the corner where the cases are going up. every other state the cases were steady or numbers going down. fast forward to the current numbers, currently we have 28 states where the numbers are going up, 28 states so this is going in the wrong direction. nationally we have about 92,000 cases per day and 1,100 deaths per day. so while it feels like i know we all want this to be over, when you have 1,100 americans dying every day, obviously this pandemic is still causing terrible, terrible trouble. erica, jim? >> to jim's point, what we're se

cnn's elizabeth cohen joins me now. this was interesting to hear from dr. fauci saying that, yes, there are more vaccinated people in the hospital. >> it is interesting because that's been the whole argument, the whole discussion about boosters is do boosters keep people from becoming severely ill with covid-19. so let's take a look. i called dr. fauci and i said i heard what you said on nbc, can you give me the data behind this, and so here is the data that he gave me. this is israeli data. when you look at severe cases of covid-19, among people 60 and older, you can see, you know, well over half of them are in unvaccinated people. that's the big red line on the left. that's very clear that being unvaccinated is the biggest risk. but the middle bar is the number of cases for people who had two doses but have not been boosted. the far bar, the tiny one, is people who had two doses plus a booster. in other words, if you're boosted, you're more than five times less likely to get severe covid-19. that's among people 60 and older, and what the fda is currently
