after the 2010 loss, there were people on the left who were literally writing op-eds saying barack obama shouldn't run for president again. those are sort of crazy hot takes that you get in all this and not understand this pattern. and the question is can we break this pattern and how do we go about breaking this pattern because what you've talked about is right. the party in power gets punished the next year there's a historical trend there. but what i would say is different about what's happening now, ari, this is really important for us to understand, is we actually have to break that trajectory because, ari, we don't break that going into this midterm, it may well be the last sort of midterm or end of democracy as we know it because if you look at what republicans are doing across these states and you know, in the state legislative bodies and if you look at that, if we can't stop that from the federal level, we don't know what 2024 is going to look like. we may have a next presidential election where, where if republicans are in control, they actually throw out the votes and they put

the only time the pattern was broken in 2013 when a leader after barack obama was reelected president and some guy named terry mcauliffe was elected governor of virginia and then the pattern went back to the same as it always been. one party wins the white house and other party wins virginia's mansion. youngkin has history and momentum on his side. what mcauliffe has on his side is math. the fact that this has been a bluer and bluer state and so the question is, do enough democrats come out to vote for mcauliffe? does youngkin motivate republicans in a year when trump is not on the ballot which plays both ways. right, trump is in a lock box. we'll not know until tonight how this works out. i think anybody tells you they know how this is going to play is wrong. we just don't know yet. i don't rule out the possibility that other candidate could win convincingly either because of the momentum or the math. let's see. >> let's put sam stein in the position telling us how this is going to play out. >> white house senator for politico. sam, how is it looking in virginia, any polls giving you

the two of them are there between barack obama and laura bush. the whole thing felt very -- i keep harping on, it felt familiar, because i know that's a weird thing to say about a funeral but it felt like a familiar comfort, almost, in a way. i just think there is so much about general powell that we were reminded of today, the seminal human theme. we don't even mention his service as a young military officer. the guy was in vietnam twice, he has a purple heart because he was in a helicopter crash and ran back to pull out three people. there's so much about him that we know but we've forgotten because he's done so much. i found i'm glad i sat and watched this today, i think it was a comfort. i hope other people got comfort from this service as well, particularly his family. >> it's such a lovely thought. helene cooper, thank you so much for joining us, for watching this service with us and for being with us today, we thank you for that. eugene robinson, let me bring you into the conversation. did you too find comfort in this? >> i did, i learned
