an architect of those winning strategies is david plouffe, barack obama's 2008 campaign manager, a former senior adviser in the white house, and someone who all democrats turn to for insight and counsel. so interesting to have you on the big night. >> election night 2021. >> 2021. >> there we go. >> let's start with that comparison. obama and mcauliffe were under water, as you experts like to say. but managed to win. could terry mcauliffe pull that off tonight or is it different? >> no, he could. i think the question here is, this is a -- 2013 was a tough environment for terry, too. but you know, we just can't compare this election night to a year ago. okay. i think a lot of americans, including virginia, thought we would be largely done with the pandemic. delta reared its head. the economy is growing, but not as quickly as we would like. gas prices, which i will tell you, when gas prices are this high before an election, voters are really cranky. other cost of living matters. terry is a repeat candidate. that doesn't work as well these days as it used to. a bunch of things that make the

we will win, though, with the barack obama script that barack obama strategy of addition rather than subtraction, which leads me to my second point which is that after losses with the democratic party does too often is says well, we have to choose between base mobilization and persuasion. any party that forces themselves to choose between the two is guaranteed to lose. we have got to center our message and our strategies around that, which is bold and unifying and we have got to take our messaging as well as most importantly, our policies to the majority of the american people, not just our base. >> debbie, so messaging is important. i think max rose's point is well taken about simplicity in terminology that republicans use versus terminology that democrats use and that can be fixed but underlying that, what about message? because this conversation between base and a broader audience is one that is active within the democratic party now. what should it represent itself as being in the next election in order to prevail? >> i don't think that there is any doubt, ali, that we the democr

this is the approach that rocketed barack obama to the white house, forced to confront race obama offered americans a vision, mobilized a broad, diverse coalition, while also persuading white voters. what are some of the specific ways you think democrats can do that? >> the reason we point to president obama is that lots of democrats think they can ignore racially coded republican attacks when they run for office. i think m virginia terry mcauliffe thought he could ignore them and was surprised when republicans made critical race theory an issue. president obama of course knew from the very beginning he was unable to ignore race and would have to address it. he incorporated it into his message from the very beginning in his 2004 convention speech which rocketed him to national prominence in the first place. and really in much of his message m 2008 he gave an entire speech focused on race in the middle of the campaign which is not something that any other presidential candidate in recent memory has done. specifically i think this is about what we refer to as what is called the race class t

president barack obama's first off-year election. republican bob mcdonald won the gubernatorial race in virginia by more than 17 percentage points. and chris christie became a national celebrity by winning in new jersey, despite that, democrats passed the affordable care act in 2010 and president obama was re-elected in 2012. based on that history, should we be careful to draw any major conclusions from just a handful of races? >> rev, if i were the democrats, i wouldn't talk about it anymore. there was a huge vote that passed for americans, especially in certain districts where those democrats need a win, they got one on infrastructure. who cares about virginia and new jersey anymore? that's yesterday's news. i really think that it's important -- yes, you want to do a recap of what happened and perhaps where things went right, where they went wrong, but move forward. this infrastructure bill is all about not just bridges and tunnels, but you got clean water, you got the electricity grid. you just spoke to a congressman from texas. t
