she's in arlington outside a polling station. big day today, sunlen. >> reporter: certainly is, brianna. the polls are now open here in virginia. we saw the very first voter go in and cast their ballot in arlington, virginia, a suburb just outside of washington, d.c. this is an extremely, extremely tight race, so every single vote today is going to have a real impact on the outcome. the candidates, the campaigns each know that, and that is why we've seen this frantic, last-minute dash, both candidates on the hunt for votes, trying to motivate people to come out today and cast their ballot in person. that went late into the evening last night for poetboth candida. we did see democratic terry mcauliffe not deviate whatsoever from the central part of his campaign strategy, which is to tie republican glenn youngkin to the former president, and he argued, falsely claimed last night in his campaign event, he said that glenn youngkin was doing an event with the former president. >> guess how glenn youngkin is finishing his campaign? he

this is arlington county. it's geographically small, but this produces -- joe biden got 80.6% of the vote here last year. and since this isn't quite functional yet, adam, do you know what type of vote we're looking at in arlington county here? this is key. this looks like we're getting the early vote reported out in arlington county. and i do have a point of comparison here for 2020. the absentee early vote -- okay. it was 85% for joe biden. the early absentee vote in 2020 was 85% and it looks like mcauliffe is running a couple points behind that. again, there was a ten-point cushion in the state for democrats. biden beat trump by ten points. mcauliffe can afford some slippage tonight from where trump ran in this state. so in arlington county, he ends up two to three points behind where biden ran, that one good news for terry mcauliffe. this is just one of those core vote-producing areas for democrats. this is the city of fairfax county. inside fairfax county is fairfax city. fairfax city is much smaller than

even more so at arlington, when he marries into the customs property at arlington. but there's also two other properties along the river. all told there is something like 190 slaves who are part of those properties. and robert lee benefits from that. when he marry so that he benefits from their work, their labor. he has a family who is one of the custis slaves. hurries wife has slaves who will wait on her. and they will assist with the children. they go on vacation. so, lee certainly benefits from the slave system even if he doesn't himself have personal title to large numbers of slaves. he doesn't. the curious thing is he really says nothing about slavery for years and years and years. not until the 18 fifties when slavery is becoming a crisis issue in american politics. and it's issuing to interesting that he talks about it at all because li had learned very early in his political career, military career, not to talk about politics. soldiers who talked about politics or who got mixed up in politics usually suffered for it. he saw that happen in the case of his fir
