first of all i grew up in alexandria in the same house i came home from the hospital and i never moved until i moved into the white house. i already had secret service protection back and be cut is of the sla i did and my mother didn't which was a strange phenomenon. but the most exciting part of it was moving into a place i had male bathroom and did not have to share with my brothers. a special note jonas joined this evening by his daughter alexandria so welcome to both of you. john's new book "the last liberal republican" an insider's perspective on nixon's surprising social policy" reveals the influence of those of moynihan and ehrlichman and the broader demonstrations very at ease. these men who surrounded the president impacted american social policy for decades much of which we are only realizing now. richard nixon shocked democrats the extent of his -- he proposed a guaranteed family income and almost achieved a national health insurance program as a republican but i will save the rest of the conversations for these two gentlemen so pleased turn me in welcoming john roy price in frank gannon. [applause] b at the division of labor. it's a pleasure to be here with an old friend and not actually a former colleague to does you were gone by the time i arrived. john has written a very important book combining several things. he has led a very interesting life and in many ways you are there every major event and you worked for some of them. then he presents a

washington, i am a yankee i guess, moved down to washington dc a decade ago and noticed over the river in alexandria there still streets and roads named after confederates and i was puzzled why that would be the case and in charlottesville, statues were not put up right after the civil war to honor battlefield heroes, they were erected in 1924 as symbols of white power, the ku klux klan held a parade to celebrate statues and we got around to discussing the dining school. follow my premise and i will let you take away to explain the dining school. i alluded to it before his children and young adults, who have a certain set of values, beliefs, narratives and when introduced to new ideas it can be quite jarring to the senses, the dining school interpretation of the confederacy and reconstruction, from crazy guy and left field, a prestigious ivy league university, that narrative dominated scholarship for half a century so what was the dining school and why is it important? and why is that important for this discussion? >> dunning was historian at colombia university, he had a lot of influence on the way

oppose and delay the confederate advance for the last extremity to allow the army to make their way to alexandria and fredericksburg and link up with the army of virginia. number three, pope is to attack the confederate rail lines and communications with charlottesville. he can turn the tide of the campaign on the virginia peninsula. all these things that pope is fighting with begin to change them. they weigh on them. what a great reputation he has will say this about pope's challenges in august 4th. how do they expect pope to beat with an inferior force the veterans of jackson. i would breathe again. several days into the campaign, the defeated cedar mountain and pulling back surrendered the initiative to robert e. lee. he will seize that initiative immediately and will begin to capitalize on all that it will provide him. as it continues to unfold, the army of virginia plummets further. general orders number five, off the land has gotten way out of hand. damaging the morale to the men in the ranks because the army is hungry when pope takes command, he fires a very intelligent fellow by the name

alexandria cortez is recognized for five thank you, madam chair for hosting the hearing and thank you for joining us today. i want to take a few minutes to discuss buybacks. during the pandemic, i and many others on this committee introduced pieces of legislation either banning practice of stock buyback or regulating cap a wide spectrum in one of the issues banning the practice for any corporation receiving public assistance, getting bailed out and mandating workers in equity state or public granted any of those public ways. i want to dig into this a little bit. for folks at home, he set this up buyback practice of a company using profit or margin to purchase shares of its own stock as opposed to whether investing raising wages, research and development etc. >> if i could brought up that, i think the comedies that use dividends stock buybacks have made decisions to send money out of the company's to their shareholders or buyback shares rather than investing. i think it's usually a two-step process, one is whether to invest in innovation and so forth or send it out and usually a second
