let's bring in nbc news investigations correspondent tom winter. so tom, we should say, this is a different case, but comes after a similar scheme among a number of nfl veterans who pleaded guilty to charges against them. so walk us through these allegations against these 18 former nba players. >> right, so specifically and according to the indictment and what the u.s. attorney spoke about today, terrence williams, one of the people charged in this, is essentially named the ringleader or the person who, quote, orchestrated this whole setup. and these former players, some of whom we're looking at onscreen, what they would do in some instances is provide a kickback to williams but in all instances, according to the charges, williams would provide them with fake invoices for them to then submit to the nba's health and wellness program for the players to get paid directly. so what happened here is that they would pass along these fake invoices. and by the way, geoff, this was not a well-thought-out scheme because some of the invoices, according to the

tom, give us the update here. >> this is the first case to go to trial. this was a charged case going back to march of 2019, obviously doesn't typically in cases like this they don't go to trial 2 1/2 years later, but the pandemic will do that. john wilson used to work at staples is venture capitalists, and two were accused of taking part in the schemes. this person, rick singer, he ran organizations that would make introductions to coaches at various schools and from that point they would pay, the parents would pay what prosecutors say was a bribe to singer and then would pay coaches to bring children of famous orwell they parents on on to the team, and in some cases it was not a way to play that sport, and it was a way to get them into the university of their choice. you remember the two most famous individuals who got tied up in this was felicity huff, and lockman. they were able to play taped conversations between the parents and springer in court, and that was pretty damning evidence and led to these guilty convictions here today. >> tom winter, than

. >>> tom winter has more details on this case. tom, the former president testifying this morning in this case. can you give us more background and what his testimony means here or what it doesn't mean? >> well, it's exactly as you said, garrett. at the end of the day it boils down to a group of protesters that say they were assaulted by trump's body guard, including trump's perm body -- personal body guard and right hand man, leading to the point where he got secret service protection. he stayed on with the president. the allegations in this incident comes on an important day in then candidate trump's candidacy when he came forward and said he promised he would not run as a third party candidate. there was a ton of media outside of trump tower that day. and that's one of the things that's going to make this lawsuit so difficult for some of the people named it. specifically the body guards. because a lot of this alleged incident and these assaults were actually captured on camera. basically what the six individuals are looking for

i want to dig deeper and bring in tom winter, who is covering the deposition. tom, on my drive into work today, i saw the reporters lined up in front of trump tower. not something i have seen for many months. what's going to happen today? >> well, this deposition, stephanie, should begin any moment, frankly. it's going to be videotaped. it's going to be at trump's towers and the headquarters of his business in his former residence. so i think one of the things that we should hear about is at some point, we'll see some filings related to today's deposition in this case and in this case docket, but we shouldn't probably see the president's video deposition until and if there is a jury trial. of course, some of it could be included in future legal filings. the real goal here today, i think, for the attorneys representing these six individuals who say they were assaulted outside of trump tower on september 3rd and 2015, is to establish that the president is personally liable for this. the president's wallets are obviously pretty thick. and so i think for them to be

tom, where do we go from here? how do we keep pushing? >> i want to step back and build on something you just said. that is that we used to have two responsible governing parties in the united states. i disagreed with the republicans on a lot of things, but at the end of the day they felt a responsibility to the country. at a moment when they're refusing to extend the debt limit, when the overwhelming majority of them are refusing to vote for a bipartisan highway bill, what we have to understand is that the well-being of the country is now exclusively on the shoulders of democrats. we have to do our work with a zero vote majority in the senate, with only three votes to spare in the house, which means all of us have to agree on this stuff to move forward. that's not easy. it takes time. it requires negotiation. it looks messy, but i much prefer the messiness on our sides to the forced conformity and irresponsibility on the other side. so the next step very simply is that we need to take the time to find consensus among democrats on the sec

let me bring in tom winter with more. so tom, this is interesting. because there has been these various legal issues that donald trump has gotten tied up in, there has always been the question of what if he ends up deposed. walk us through expectations if he shows up for this, what happens if he does not. >> he has been ordered to by a judge so he really doesn't have a tremendous choice in the matter. the judge did give him an alternative date for later in the month if there is some sort of an unexpected illness or other hiccup that would break vent the president from sitting down for this deposition scheduled to occur monday at his trump tower on fifth avenue. so that is what is expected as far as the president goes. this lawsuit goes back over six years to something that happened in september of 2015 where according to these six individuals involved in filing the lawsuit against not only the former president but as well as his bodyguard keith shiller, that they were protesting the president's comments about mexican immigrants and that these individ

i want to bring in tom winter. so, tom, take us through these charges, these schemes and why this matters. >> yeah, basically, hallie, you file or submit something to the fec, which oversees the campaign donations in this country federally, you have to be truthful with them. the series of donations from the russian national, it is illegal in the united states for a foreign national to contribute to a u.s. election. and if you do that, passing it through another person or through yourself, if you can lawfully make those donations yourself, then you violated the law. so that's the first scheme, this andre was trying to set up a cannabis business in the united states, and allegedly parnas and another third person involved in this who also has been charged, also part of this trial, were involved with funneling his donations as part of straw donations on his behalf. that is scheme number one. scheme number two is the $325,000 donation to a pro trump super pac. the donation was not illegal. but when they made representat
