terry mccauliffe's lead is growing smaller. donald trump called a rally for yunkin last night but he was a no-show as we walks the fine line between upsetting both sides. joining me now is terry mccauliffe. well, governor, great to have you back. the momentum seems to be in what was thought to be the challenger, self funded, what is making the difference? are you facing a lot of head winds because of the gridlock on capitol hill and frankly the problems that the biden white house is having? >> you know this is close a close race. for had for 44 years, the part that wins the white house will be the other party to win the governor. they started off by doing pledge of allegiance to a flag that was up here on january 6th for the insurrection. that alone is disqualifying and glenn has not come out to disqualify that. we lived through theinsanity of donald trump for four years. the only thing on his website has been election integrity. not jobs or education. he is doubling down on conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. he said

he campaigned with terry mccauliffe and he has a trip abroad tomorrow. you also have an ongoing dispute between the head of the progressives, congresswoman janet paul, and nancy pelosi on what is a frame work? is it a list? is it legislative text? >>. >> is just one more factor that could cloud down this process. first to what the president is doing here he will be reaching out to lawmakers. will there be meetings that remain to be seen. the takes are high for all of the withins that you laid out. he is going overseas tomorrow and the stakes could not be higher. they need a deal before he departs. the world leaders o so fest cased enough to come to their own conclusions about what commitments they may or may not make. but just take that climate summit. he will be asking various world leaders to make commitments when it comes to climate and the optics could be difficult. you think about the domestic politics, the fact that he was out overnight campaigning for terry mccauliffe, that was next tuesday. they said that the president and lawmakers need to get i

let's talk about virginia, terry mccauliffe. he was well liked. maybe that is the problem. certainly being dragged down by joe biden's declining polls. and another poll went to 46-46, is this a slap? >> you bring up mccauliffe's experience. i don't know if it is as much of a coverage. they're not happy in general, and you know what, it is new blood versus old blood with particularly middle of the road voters. i do, i, you know, i think in fact that the youngk eerks n campaign has not treated him -- i thought he would be the more old versus new, he has not run a campaign like that, but that is, i think, one or two points of a deficit there. he still has more potential voters than youngkin does. he still has the ability to change the electorate. youngkin has to still hope that the turnout is not that good. that's why at the end of the day you would rather be mccauliffe than youngkin. what would the dropoff be from the presidential race to this race? if it is in the 40s, this will be a long night. if it's in the 30s, it will be very fast election with advantage mccauliffe, so

mccauliffe, remember he won nar low. ken cuccinelli was his opponent. he barely won. obviously republicans glen yuncan trying to present a more moderate image remember what happened in to 2013. joe biden himself hovers over this race. this is how we look at the virginia race as you mentioned kind of a prelude to the mid-terms. biden right now just under 43% his approval rating nationally, and in virginia which again he carried by 10 points last year over donald trump, there's biden's average approval rate in those polls we've been looking at, 45% in the commonwealth of virginia. so, yes, it's gotten bluer and bluer, but democrats now face a set of circumstances here. they control the presidency. the president isn't that popular in virginia. they control the house. they control the senate. in the past that has been trouble for a party in a virginia governor's race. it's why the polls are so close right now, garret. >> northern virginia, those d.c. suburbs always come in late, keeps democrats sweating to the very end even

terry mccauliffe, youngkin who is trying to maneuver around the party. >> claire, one of the paid fors that they were pushing is more irs enforcement. that gets back to the old "we're going to cut fraud, waste, and abuse. does that pass the smell test? that this is credibly paid for? >> i do think that it is important to know that under the republican majorities and under president trump, there was a systematic dismantling of the irs. if you imagine having a debt and a business and the way you go about addressing that debt is to cut off the accounts receivable department and make sure no one is working there, there are legitimate issues that can be raised about what the irs needs to make sure that people are paying their fair share. most americaning do. the ones that avoid taxes do not and there is a reason that staffing the irs makes sense. will it pay for $2 trillion worth of spending? no. so there has to be some adjustment to the trump ax rates in some regard to get more money in the door if they're going to legitimately say they're paying for these programs. >> we're about to hear

a margin of era, and terry mccauliffe is not a sure thing. >> let's talk about the incredibly shrinking president. he was around the world talking about america is back, a very successful g 7. they come back and they face a gridlock in congress. and according to david, foreign leaders are saying why can't he just lower the boom. >> this is not unique to president bide b. congress has be devilled just able every president, but again, the challenge for president biden is that in some way there's is not that many that he can unilaterally do. he is but he didn't like when they came in to lower the boom. there are issues that he didn't have to deal with during the campaign but something like a supply chain issue. a real challenge that he believes quite correctly that his president that's will rise and fall, this is deeply tied and this is something they feel. it's not even halloween and they're going online and they're looking for christmas and hanukkah presidents for their kids. no one wants to say santa was held up at the port of china and there was a mix up with going to long beach. this
