and that was so harmful to nfl owners. it was so -- um, you know, it was so disruptive to them that they ruined a man's career. but there is a place for john gruden and not for colin kaepernick and to me that says everything about where the nfl is. >> what's it going to take for the nfl to fix this? >> i don't know if a league that has, frankly, embraced and supported the kind of attitude that john gruden displayed is really capable of correcting itself. i mean, i know they put forth efforts to do it but they're performative and they're largely polite. you know, you stenciling in racism in the end zone isn't going to do it. you having black performance at the super bowl halftime show isn't going to do it. you have to fix the institutional racism in your league and it can only come if the nfl is willing to do something drastic. but as long as owners maintain the level of power that they do and they look the way that they look -- all white men, for the most part -- i think it's going to be a very hard road for them to change

it festered within the nfl. there are 650,000 e-mails and other documents collected as part of the nfl's investigation of the washington football team and its workplace. the players' union is now calling for all those documents to be made public. a short time ago the nfl told cnn it has no plans to reveal any more details of that probe. emily applegate was a driving force behind that investigation. she worked for what was form he will -- formerly the redskins for a year and complained of constant harassment and mistreatment. emily, thank you for joining us. i can only imagine what went through your mind when the contents of those e-mails were revealed. what have these last few days been like for you? >> thank you so much for having me. we have been very busy these last new days trying to piece together all the information we've been receiving. i think the first thing that goes through our head is that we're so grateful that anything we have done was able to put pressure on the nfl to remove somebody that is so w

70% of the players in the nfl are black. how would they feel after seeing the racist email that came to light earlier? randy moss on nfl network last night, he was talking about this. you could see the emotion. i was struck by how emotional the players are. what do you think the reaction to this will be among the players in the league? >> i mean, from the people i've spoken with, and it's tough to gauge what several thousand people think, but i've sensed relief, honestly. this is a man who, you know, i know publicly was one thing, and he sort of seemed to be kind of a jovial, cooky leader. these emails uncovered the real thoughts of jon gruden. i think there were a lot of people wondering, players, executives of color, many of whom i spoke to last night, coaches of color, just humans, we're just wondering, like, is this person going to get what he deserves? is there going to be accountability? are you allowed to do this? even if he didn't work in the nfl at the time, even if he worked at espn, how is this very, very high-pro

this has got to be such a problem for the nfl. >> well, take a step back. 30% to 40% of nfl fans are women. women, particularly mothers, are influential in the homes, in allowing sons and daughters to play football. they're trying to attract women to the nfl to broaden the fan base and to improve the, ultimately, finances of the league and the future of the league. so this goes against a lot of what the nfl is trying to do from a business perspective as well. obviously, this is only one coach, but he's symbolic. he is a powerful coach. he's at a popular team. this isn't the kind of image the nfl is at all interested in. >> you said it is just one coach. this came out, interestingly and oddly, as part of a patterns and practices investigation into the washington football team, of which gruden was never associated. his brother coached there, and his friend was the general manager there. are there more emails out there that might implicate others now in the league in an adverse way? >> well, the nfl said that they reviewed 650,000 emails. the jon gruden emails were only a small slice of
