jonathan reiner. he's the director of the card yak catheterization program at george washington university hospital, also presidential historian douglas brinkley. doctor, i'm going to start with you. let's discuss the former president and his hospitalization in california tonight. urinary tract infection spreading to his bloodstream. can you tell us about his condition and how dangerous this is? >> good evening, don. it's been reported that he's doing well, and his team is considering switching him from intravenous antibiotics to oral antibiotics perhaps as early as tomorrow. so sepsis is an infection that has spread to the blood. a lot of things can do it. it's much more common as we get older, and it's very common to have the urinary tract as the source. commonly the kidneys or the bladder. sometimes there's, you know, no underlying cause. sometimes there is. i suspect that the president's physicians both in california and new york will search for whether there's an underlying cause for the infectio

jonathan reiner. doctor, good evening. thanks for joining us. we spoke just last night about former president bill clinton being hospitalized after an infection that spread from a uti. doctors are saying he's trending in the right direction, but he will stay in the hospital. how long do you think that will be? >> it's hard to know. but he was hospitalized, i think it was three days ago. and he remains hospitalized now. so he was sick. and they want to give him a full course of antibiotics. and as we said last night, sepsis kills about a quarter of a million people every year in the united states. you can die from this. a 75-year-old man can die from this. so they're taking their time. what we're not sure about is how sick he was when he was admitted to the hospital. we often get kind of a rosy story, you know, from the publicity folks when they try and paint the picture. it sounds like his medical team wants to give him the full course of iv antibiotics, and it sounds like a good plan. >> and i want to get to the news about johnson & johnson, th

jonathan rhiner is here for our friday night house call. good evening. how are you? >> i'm good, don. >> thank you for joining. a friend that i know, two of his children got covid, asymptomatic, a surprise to them. so kids can get it. they happened to be asymptomatic but not all children are so this is very important. we're getting so close to what parents have been long waiting for. the cdc will meet on tuesday. if they aapprove vaccines for kids, how soon could we be seeing the vaccines going into arms? >> i expect dr. welinski will aapprove the committee's almost certain recommendation for this vaccine. as the vaccines are shipping, i expect children will start to receive it on wednesday. so next week we'll start to get shots into arms. >> recent polling shows a majority of parents say they won't vaccinate their kids right away with cases going down, some parents are wondering if it is even worth it. i think the exam of what i just said. you know, that's why it is worth it. it wasn't just the two kids, right? my friend's two kids. the two kids got it from someone

jonathan reiner. doctor, good evening to you. we know that vaccines work, right? how do you explain the ongoing republican resistance to life-saving public health measures while we are in the middle of a pandemic still? >> it's almost like these politicians are trying to sabotage our recovery. there are some interesting stats that relate -- that i think answer some of these questions. on april 19th vaccines were made available for all americans. and on that date texas and new york had very similar numbers of deaths. new york had about 52,000 deaths. texas had i believe around 49,000 deaths. and since that time, since vaccines were available to all adults in the united states, new york has had an additional 3,000 deaths and texas has had almost 20,000 additional deaths. and the big difference is that new york has fully vaccinated 72% of its population and florida only 60%. and now what we see is the -- excuse me, texas. and now what we see is the texas governor really trying to prevent these mandates, which have been shown to increase vaccination uptake in the unit

jonathan reiner's take on this massive departure. good evening to you, doctor. so dr. collins told wolf earlier tonight that he's sure nih is going to be fine when he leaves, but where's the permanent head of the fda? it's been nine months. >> being blocked by various senators. this administration apparently was very interested in having janet wilcock, who's the current acting commissioner to be the permanent commissioner of the fda, but various senators are blocking her. i think it's key that position be filled and i think it's key that the nih position be filled expeditiously. who would have thought, you know, a year ago that something as apolitical as the director of the national institutes of health, really the preeminent research organization in the world, would be so politicized and so subject to, you know, the craziness in the united states senate? but here we are, and i think anything is possible. >> yeah. to the vaccines now. johnson & johnson asking the fda to authorize a booster shot for their covid vaccine, but the company is leaving it up to the fda and th
