diplomacy is on full display today in europe. secretary of state anthony blinken is wrapping up a visit to paris meant really to ease tensions over the new defense pact, remember, with uk and australia. the agreement to build nuclear powered submarines that led australia to a $66 billion deal for diesel electric subs from france. then we have u.s. talks with china. they come as taiwan's defense minister predicted today china could be capable of launching a full-scale invasion of the island within the next four years. let's have more on both these stories. in hong kong following the u.s./china diplomacy, joining us from paris, the latest on the u.s. secretary of state visit. melissa, i suspect as we set up there just before coming to you, this meeting is very much about mending fences with france given what occurred over the nuclear-powered submarines. how did that go? >> reporter: well, secretary of state blinken doing what he does best, which is use words, america's top diplomat, of course, they happened to be on french televisi

out what's next for the leadership, who is the next chancellor, this has larger implications across europe. kurtz, as you said, was a young, charismatic leading conservative figure at a time that conservative political parties across the continent are losing momentum, are losing votes. i'm going to give you the example of germany i was there last month when in a stunning defeat angela merkel's center right party lost to the social democratic party. this was a period in which germany is now trying to figure out its future after merkel who is stepping down now after 16 years. so a lot of conservative politicians were looking to kurtz as the sort of new face of that conservative across europe. the other concern here is much like happened in germany with the cdu, with lang merkel's party, that inability to galvanize support, the inability to reach out to voters meant losing the young vote on one end. people wanting a more green agenda, wanting a more progressive agenda and on the other end losing more right wing voters who in germany and austria were gravitating towards more far right groups.

well, there are pockets of resistance across parts of europe. there are high levels of vaccine uptick in most countries in western europe and we have seen that. but in recent days, we've seen protests in italy and switzerland as woeell over the measures being taken to really nurnl encourage people to get that jab. what that entails in italy, the green pass, people will have to provide proof of getting the vaccination or getting that infection recently, recovering from that, or indeed getting a negative test within the last 48 hours. and those who don't comply with that green pass could face getting a fine of up to $1,075. and those in switzerland putting in a restriction for those who don't comply of going to restaurants and bars and clubs. but just last year, polls reflected that many people were not keen to get that jab. and president macron announced that there would be the health pass, we saw that vaccine uptick surge. so there is a example of these kind of measures encourage people to go out asand get that vaccine. >> it seems universal tha

poor relations after the afghan debacle between the united states and her allies in mainland europe. and vladimir putin's real focus over the next year is going to be on a bilateral meeting with joe biden. joe biden's the only man that he sees as a sufficient colossus for him to meet in any serious sense. the other, of course, would be the president of china. he sees himself very much in that bracket of leadership and sees historically very little to be gained from these large gatherings of the international community of leaders. and in the past, he's always used them as opportunities to take the elbow, if you like, of the u.s. president and get a great deal of focus on bilateral meetings that happen unofficially during these sorts of gatherings of g20 and others, wolf. >> i was in geneva when president putin met personally one-on-one with president biden. it was a very significant moment. i assumed it was going to be repeated here in rome. clearly that's not happening. sam, i want you to stand by. as we said, the chinese president, xi jinping, won't be here at the g20 summit in pers

therefore, europe is not as heavily reliant on turkey when it comes to the economy as turkey is on europe. and against that backdrop, also worth mentioning the turkish economy has been struggling for quite sometime now. so should europe choose to do so, it does have a number of other potential pressure points that it can try to put on turkey. that being said, this ongoing back and forth over the detention of oswan kavala has been going on a number of time with countries calling for his release, with this fairly unprecedented it must be said statement that was signed by the ten countries asking for his release, asking for the decision that was taken by the european court for human rights to be upheld. that was a decision that called for kavala's immediate release. and turkey being a member of the european counsel is, in theory, supposed to uphold that decision. a lot of human rights organizations, outside observers, analysts are calling this a political move to try to continue to tamp down on voices of opposition and dissent throughout turkey. kavala is hardly the first person who has spok
