greg: i'm greg bonnell. let's get a check on the markets. we are one day i from hearing from jerome powell, we have had some hawkish commentary from the fed, and we have this tragic situation in kabul. taking a look at the markets, they are under pressure. we are seeing an uptick in the yield as well. perhaps a haven play out there considering the geopolitical strife. the u.s. dollar moving higher against a basket of international currencies. the vix jumping higher as well. catching the attention of the global community. let's get more on what is happening, go to the white house with our white house correspondent annmarie hordern. what is the latest? >> the latest statement from the pentagon that a number of servicemen and marines were killed due to these two explosions, one outside the abby gate of the kabul airport, another just about one mile away at a hotel, the baron hotel. we are still waiting for the pentagon to give us an exact number about who was killed, the casualties in terms of who was injured and fatally killed in these two exp

greg: i think it stays soft. what a signal from the federal reserve, basically saying we can't have an open conference at jackson hole because of the variant. so even the fed is knowledge and that this problem is not over yet, and it could lead to a softer economy towards the end of the year. very tough choices for jerome powell. guy: bloomberg is reporting that janet yellen, is supporting powell being reappointed. does afghanistan make that even more likely? i would have thought the president wouldn't want to be dealing with anything difficult right now, anything that is going to rock the boat, anything that could upset the market. does he just reappoint powell as a result of what is happening elsewhere? is that the easy choice? greg: absolutely, i think that the markets like powell. i think he is a shoo-in now after this leak could bloomberg over the weekend. there is an interesting angle, and that is powell is not an aggressive regulator. we know that. that has been controversial. if he had been replaced by la

we will be back with more. ♪ greg: this is bloomberg markets. we've got a pretty hot report out of the financial times about a big deal in chicago. the cme approaching the cboe global markets about a deal at about $16 billion according to the reporting. what are we seeing here and what do you think some of the catalysts are behind this? >> we've gone through. where there has been a determinism out of dealmaking across the financial sector. this is interesting, because cme is known as the big feature exchange operator and it is making a play for cboe which has control and is looking to combine into a larger behemoth. we see it could be $16 billion deal combining the two. it would have one of the largest operations in the states going forward. oath sites have not commented on the status of the deal. -- both sides have not commented on the status of the deal. if it goes through, it will reshape the landscape. matt: do they need to do a deal like this? does there need to be consolidation? >> over the last year, 18 months, elevated activity across th

greg: it certainly slows the timeline down to a certain degree. overall, we monitor the data on mobility that suggests many economic participants are still moving around. it is a negative. it does slow the timetable. you're seeing it to a certain extent in the economic stats. but the bigger picture direction appears clear, that one way or the other, the economies across the world are coming back online. the u.s. is leading because fiscal policy has been so extreme but the rest of the world is lacking and following, and that is occurring despite the difficulties that the delta variant and probably future variance will cause. so it matters. it certainly affects the timeline of these decisions, but it is not, in our view, changing the fate in the likely direction. alix: that kind of leads me and direct way to china because china seems to have adopted a zero-tolerance policy, which is really put the government and someone of a bind. we saw today and one of the papers that fronts with the government says, that they're going to keep think it into the ec

all right, greg liggins in our newsroom tonight, greg, thank you. new information from the fire lines of the massive dixie fire that wildfire has prompted new mandatory evacuation orders in remote areas of promos and lasting counties. as of about noon today, the dixie fire is about 721,000 acres. it is 37% contained now since it started five weeks ago. the fire has destroyed more than 1000 structures, 650 of them homes. some positive news tonight in lake county, where the cash fire has been burning for the past four days, the lake county fire protection district says the cash fire burned 83 acres. it is now 100% contained. the fire also destroyed more than 135 homes and buildings and more than 150 vehicles. some people who were evacuated are being allowed to return to their homes tonight, and officials say all evacuation orders will be lifted tomorrow. crews will be in the area tonight, mopping up. and making sure that area is safe for residents to return. investigators are still working to confirm exactly how the fire started, and cal fire says rig

i want to turn to the pandemic and the texas governor greg abbott testing positive for covid. let's hope he gets well, he's okay with this. he's sevening regeneron's monoclonal antibody treatment. but how does this look when he's against mask mandates, banning schools from requiring masks? >> like you, don, i hope and expect that governor abbott will get better and there's every reason to think he will. not only has he been vaccinated, tested every day, but he also -- even though he has no symptoms -- immediately got the gold plated monoclonal antibody treatment, which of course is not available to most people and typically not available to people who are asymptomatic. and i've got to say, i don't think -- for somebody who through his actions endangers vulnerable people in his own state for votes, hypocritical is not strong enough a word for that. i think the word is immoral, and i don't know that that reality will harm greg abbott in texas, but the fact that he would carry on with the protection of the best that medicine has to offer while doing what he's doing to facilitate
