john barry joins us, thank you for being with us. the u.s. around 60,000 cases a day, compared to 11,000 a month ago. delta is around three times more transmissible. how worried are you about a variant evolving that could completely bypass existing vaccines? >> i am worried. i think, you know, all the five pandemics going back to 1889 that we know anything about in detail, the virus enters the human population, it's a new virus. it adapts to humans. initially, it becomes better at transmissibility, which has happened. and in past pandemics, the viruses have tended to become more dangerous as well. which, the data is not crystal clear yet, but it looks like they're at least somewhat more dangerous. we're not done yet. there will be more variants, and whether they get worse, or whether delta is the worst case, we don't know. i do think that we have already seen tendencies of the various variants to at least marginally escape the ability of the vaccines and for natural immunity, they demonstrated at least some ability to escape. i think over a p

thank you for being with us. i have been following your twitter updates, the updates you have been giving on the hospital and the patients there. what does your covid unit look like now? >> thank you for having me. i do appreciate it. today as of right now we have 122 covid positive patients in the hospital, about 20 of those are currently in the emergency room waiting for placement in beds upstairs. our plan allowed us to open multiple units based on acuity. we have two units serving icu level patients, one of those is full with 28 of those patients on covid, 24 are ventilated and then we have several stepdown units and we have capacity on the medical unit as well we can move patients on and off. it takes a lot of work to move those patients around and make adjustments to make sure we have capacity to care for the patients. >> 122. if i am following this correctly, and you can correct me if i'm wrong, that's a new record for your hospital? >> unfortunately, yes, it is. the peak of the surge over the last winter,

thank you so much for joining us, doctor. we're seeing the rise of the delta variant, mostly in the south and places like missouri, where the investigation rate is extremely low, but also in california where it's now the dominant variant, probably the best example is l.a. county. it's reported the highest number of cases in months now. in fairness, it's still way lower than what we saw during the peak. but i guess it's the rate at which it's increasing that is worrying experts. so the many hospitals that you help manage that treat millions of patients across the state. so you get a great overview of what's happening. what are you seeing? >> well, you know, it's really clear that the delta variant is much more transmissible than before. we were talk it as an abstraction about a month ago. and now it's become the predominant strain in the united states, and it's quickly going to be that in california as well. in california i can say that because we've got higher vaccination rates, while we've seen increases in hospitalizations,

they have used the power. i just want to see him use that power to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt. and i'll tell you why. it's because of the people who need that debt canceled. 40% of the folks who are carrying student loan debt don't have a college diploma. they tried but life caught up with them. they had babies or someone in the family got sick. they were working three jobs. and now they're earning what a high school grad earns but they are paying on college loans. it is an economic justice issue. it is also a racial justice issue. african-americans borrow more money to go to school, more money while they're in school, and have a harder time paying it it off when they get out of school. canceling $50,000 of student loan debt would help close the black/white wealth gap for people with student loan debt by 25 points. and for latinos by 27 points. this is the single act that the president could take to help close that wealth gap, to help close that economic inequality act, and to help our economy, to get

most fundamental issue before us in this moment, and we have to use every tool at our disposal to ensure that in every election, state, local, and federal, that every vote is protected. >> michigan was targeted by the former president and his supporters trying to overturn the election. lawmakers including sidney powell, lin wood, sued using witness statements that claimed supposed fraud, right? well, today they faced a district court, judge linda v. parker grilled them on whether they had tried to verify those statements, saying this. there's a duty that counsel has that when you're submitting a sworn statement, that you have reviewed it, that you have done some minimal due diligence. how do you think today's hearing went? >> well, it was six hours, so it certainly was -- it was a very educational experience, i think, for a lot of folks who watched it. it shows that there is a lot of due diligence happening with regards to this question before the court. should there be consequences for when attorneys use their privilege and access to the court to try to undermine democracy with no facts

i think that's why he sat down with us. you know, he said a lot of other things, don in our interview that strained credulity. he said essentially that he thinks most of the people who were charging up capitol hill on january 6th were very loving people, that they were ushered into the building by friendly capitol police officers. he said that he believed that crowd that came out for him on january 6th at the ellipse may have stretched into as many as a million people, the largest crowd he'd ever seen, all cheering for him. none of those things are true, and yet it's important to donald trump that he repeat them. and the question becomes really, you know, how many other people are going to continue to believe this information for which there is no evidence? >> it is really interesting how he lives in a delusion and he gets other people to buy into that. it's amazing. your reporting, carol, about the chairman of the joint chiefs, general mark milley preparing to stop the then-president from attempting a coup, i mean it is st

um, explain this to us. supreme court came to this decision saying that bill cosby -- they didn't say that he was innocent? >> no, they didn't. in fact, they never really reached -- no, they did not. they didn't reach that conclusion, at all. they didn't say they thought he should be acquitted. they said this trial never should have gone on because there was an earlier agreement not to prosecute. and that, earlier prosecutor, bruce castor, he didn't make it in his own, personal capacity. he, essentially, foreclosed it because he was doing it on behalf of the commonwealth of pennsylvania. and in doing so, it was the government that agreed not to prosecute bill cosby. and the court found that the later prosecutor could not simply undo what the government already agreed not to do because bill cosby had relied, to his detriment, and actually made statements that they were able to use as incriminating against him, later. it is a procedurally-correct result. but naturally, you can imagine, the emotion in seeing th

but you are sort of bringing it to us. tell us what we can expect. >> well, i told people it doesn't matter if you believe or what you believe, it's a city that's absolutely worth visiting to see the power it has on people and the influence it's had on history. it plays a major role in judaism, christianity and islam and at different times and few thousand years of history the different religions controlled the city. it's not just that significance, it has a political significance as well. it's one of the founding problems of the united nations. we see it on our screens all the time and that significance isn't likely to diminish. it's religious and biblically important. >> this is coming at such an essential time with what we've seen here between the israelis and the palestinians just in 2021. >> there is a biblical or historical grounding to all of these conflicts, a claim to the city so many people so many reli religions, so many nations believe they have a part of city and they want a part of the city. perhaps not in co

cnn's whitney whield is joining us now. i know you're watching this very closely for any indications of other cases. >> this is the beginning of the end so to speak because we're now getting into the phase where people are starting to plead guilty, starting to get their sentences. 38 years old of florida pleaded guilty to one felony count. he admitted to taking selfies as we walked around the desks in the senate chamber and worn protective goggles and gloves. he originally faced five charged related to him entering the capitol and the justice department ended up dropping all of the charges against the most severe charge the obstruction charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. he's most likely to serve a lot less than that, though. he's probably serving 15 to 21 months will be the likely sentence, although the judge, of course, has a lot of discretion here. he will likely get some leniency because he accepted responsibility for his crime. but this does mark the first felony sentencing and might serve as an indicator f
