joining me is a member, democratic congresswoman from florida stephanie murphy. thank you so much for your time. i want to first get your reaction to this new reporting that minority leader kevin mccarthy is now in discussions with his fellow republicans about joining the house select committee. >> i'm certainly glad the house minority leader is willing to appoint members to this committee. i certainly hope, though, he appoints members who are willing to approach this issue from an apolitical perspective. >> as i mentioned davis has shown interest but it's possible mccarthy would instead select hard-line supporters of the former president. what concerns do you have that republicans could try to derail the committee's investigations? do you think the selections would be made in good faith to try to get to the bottom of the unanswered questions surrounding that day? >> on january 6 the capitol was attacked by an angry mob of people who hurt law enforcement, sought to capture the republican vice president or hundreding down lawmakers in addition to folks who had put

. >>> i want to bring in congresswoman stephanie murphy of florida. she is a member of the january 6th select committee. congresswoman, so happy to have you here. i found your line of questioning very personal and very touching when you talked about your own story and your own fear that day. i'm curious, you know how it works on capitol hill when you are engaging in this kind of testimony, what did you hear today that surprised you? >> well, it's good to be with you, tiffany. i thought today's testimony was intense and heart wrenching and really underscored the bravery and the courage of the law enforcement officers who were there that day trying to hold the line and to defend democracy. and what you saw today was four members of hundreds of people in law enforcement that did fight back that day. and those stories were just -- they were just incredible. i think a couple of things i took away from what they said was they entered incredible amounts of pain and were brutally assaulted and massively outnumbered. and yet they had the courage to continue to

>> absolutely, we heard stephanie murphy talking about this, the old conservative house democrats, not as many as there used to be, the caucus is much more progressive than it was 10, 15, 20 years ago but they're very concerned about it. i was talking to john yarmouth, the chairman of the house budget committee, i'll have something on punch bowl news this morning on this, his statement was it's spending of this number, they're trying to get away from bernie sanders talking about $6 trillion reconciliation package. that terrifies moderates. they can't deal with that number. so we're saying it's a net package of a couple trillion dollar. that they can sell. i think they're going to look -- their language is going to be careful to leadership. it's aimed at moderates, getting them on board because they're scared of losing them. the window on legislation is going to close probably sometime this fall. and, you know, getting something passed through the house after that, it's going to be really tough sledding. >> before i let you go, real quick. you have new reporting on what kevin mccarthy i

murphy. kevin mccarthy has yet to weigh in on the other five lawmakers of the committee. joining us white house correspondent for politico and co-author of "the playbook" eugene daniels and an msnbc contributor. first of all congrats on your recent engagement and secondly, what, as we see these committee names come out including the very polarizing pick of lizz cheney, what dynamic does this set up for the select committee aiming to be nonpartisan? >> exactly. i think that she is trying to -- the speaker is trying to recreate what she wanted with this kind of 9/11-style commission, right, something that was nonpartisan, bipartisan, something that could be beyond reproach, something where it is focused on the facts and the whitewashing or what's happened -- what happened on january 6th and that's happened since then isn't a part of this committee. that's something she's been extremely focused on this entire time. that's it. they're trying to recreate this idea that this would be something that

take someone like stephanie murphy, for example, who actually worked at the pentagon in the wake of 9/11 and tried to implement some findings from the 9/11 independent commission from that report. these evidentiary gaps and make sure this doesn't happen again, the lines that were crossed and threatened our democracy. murphy has interesting personal story, her family escaped from vietnam. so she has personal reasons for this, too. the really gripping comment she made to me if you look at all other authoritarian regimes in the world there was always an unsuccessful coup that preceded the successful coup. they are reading hundreds of pages of documents right now. all the indictments that have previously been published and working in close coordination with them. you have a justice department that is being led by a democrat right now. a lot of these subpoenas complied with. otherwise these republicans they are eyeing issuing a subpoena to are going to face more serious repercussions than under bill barr during the trump administration. >> that's the hope at least. >> some great reporting

joining us now, one of the members of that committee, congresswoman stephanie murphy. congresswoman, the first hearing is going to include capitol police officers and support staff. what can we expect? >> i think what you will see is the law enforcement officers having an opportunity to talk about their experiences that day, as well as the preparedness or lack of preparedness and shortage of equipment and things like that that they experienced on that day. and i think it will be a really telling hearing to hear firsthand from the folks that were on the front line, doing the best they could to try to keep the republican vice president, as well as lawmakers of both parties safe during that terrifying, violent domestic extremist attack. >> but then what can or will come out of it? all of this happened -- january 6th happened because former president trump's and the gop's lies about the election. a way that we would get around this is actually having stronger, better voter protection laws, but we know that you've got all sorts of colleagues that were unwilling to even cert
