abrams. well, the more than 50 texas democrats wait out the clont on the special legislative session in texas and next week. they are lobbying -- after republicans blocked the port female act last month. a group of senate democrats led by raphael warnock of georgia are preparing a revised form of legislation which is expected to be unveiled in the coming days. the details are under wraps pu it's expected to include components of west virginia senator joe manchin's proposed changes to the voting rights bill. meanwhile, pressure to act continues after leading a protest against senate inaction on voting rights with black women activists texas congressman sheila jackson lee was arrested outside a senate office building by capitol police. i'm joined now by texas state representative senfronia thompson who as you just saw testified at today's hearing. representative thompson, you spoke very powerfully about paying a poll tax, not being allowed to vote in primaries. what do you want congress to unde

i know you were with stacey abrams earlier today at a roundtable of voting rights in georgia. i know you went to get the word at ebenezer baptist church from reverend warnock before that. but of course, you'll be hearing from him again tomorrow, along with other georgia residents and experts in a rare senate rules committee hearing in atlanta on the voting restrictions recently enacted in that state. i was chair of the rules committee. what has happened in georgia for you to hold this hearing outside of washington? >> well, about 400 things have happened, al, and that's all the laws have been introduced people's freedom to vote. 28 of these bills have been signed into law. georgia is so egregious, because we've all heard about the lack of water for people in line, how you can't even give it out on a non-partisan basis. but they have done stuff like said okay, those ballot boxes, limited the hours, said you can only have them at early voting locations, made it harder to vote by mail, and then here's my favorite, the run-offs that they require here, they were nine weeks when oss

let's say it is stacey abrams. that will be a powerful top of the ticket for georgia democrats, and i think reverend -- senator reverend warnock will be able to articulate not just the work he has done in the past few years but bring in the larger work of stacey abrams and fair fight, and so many organizations, specifically black women, who have been doing the work for decades and definitely done the work of the past two years to present a larger picture to georgia voters about their duty, but also their continued duty not just to get him into office but to keep democrats like himself in office in the years to come. so, hopefully, tagging on to what eddie has said it is not just about primaries with democrats also, we have to make sure that specifically white americans who understand the importance of the right to vote start proselytizing to their relatives who don't think it is a big deal and it is sort of a tempest in a tea pot. we need to get people, to reach them where they are, obviously our messaging is not g

abrams on the ballot once again. significant races of significant national import here and a chance to draw the nation's eye to this issue in a way that a normal hearing in a normal hearing room on a normal monday in washington simply wouldn't. and i should point out that there were no republicans participating today, four democratic senators from this panel came, no republicans. although you heard praise from democrats for republican secretary of state brad raffensperger who other republicans who held the line against president trump's lies about the election at that time. this was another way to raise the stakes for why democrats believe these laws are so important to push back against and why georgia's in particular could be a key focus. >> and priscilla, over to you in austin, the standoff between texas republicans and democrats is now entering its second week. you have those texas democrats here in washington making headlines, you could argue for the wrong reasons. there are now five of them who have contracted

those democrats had more meetings with the clintons and georgia's stacey abrams, and joining us now is adam serwer who is staff writer for "the atlantic" and the latest piece is "the democratic leaders are betraying the blackvoters." tell us why you wrote something that incendiary? >> well, you have to raise the expectation of that statement saying that you will do something with the federal power that you acquire to protect the rights of the constituents who are the target of legislation that is an attempt to either diminish their access to the ballot or diminish their political influence on the electoral process. if you are not willing to do that, then you are asking for the votes without giving them anything in return. >> i want to draw you out on something that you wrote in the "atlantic" piece, because you say this about the democratic vote sers. the targeted constituencies must treat every election cycle as if their fundamental rights are on the line, and to listen to the democrats target the rights to the franchise as the new jim crow and then watch the same leaders do knotting

stacey abrams and others ad nauseam. they are jumping on this like you can't believe. let's go to the building behind me, the texas state capitol. we have had early voting since 1887. delaware the president's home state is going to have in-person early voting for the first time in 2022. and yet they -- he will go lecture texans about the fact that we've been doing it since 1987 and his home state has yet to begin doing it. we'll have other kinds of things. texas we have three things at issue. should there be drive through voting. state law prohibits it except for people infirm and unable to vote. 24 hour voting, overnight voting? they did it in harris county. not allowed by state law. they are clarifying that. the big issues here. before we listen to anything the president says we ought to say does delaware allow drive-thru voting for everybody and does delaware have 24-hour voting? that's exactly what the democrats want to do in texas and what the law already prohibits them from doing and clarified even further. >> bill: in that state house behind you in 30 minutes th

abrams have suddenly flipped flop to get on the right side of the polling. so, on the basic mechanics of how elections should be best run, when you take the constitution discussion out of the overcharged political atmosphere of the day, americans tend to agree on what it takes to run good elections. we have seen that one doesn't need fraud to shake confidence in an election. does anyone remember bush v. gore? in 2000, florida's election system was held up before world as a sad joke. incompetence, election breakdowns, untrustworthy ballots and machines, and haphazard and inconsistent rules. americans' confidence was shaken. in 2000, the left was screaming its lack of confidence in our elections. again in 2016. again in 2018. highly regarded pollster scat scott rasmussen wrote an article this year in which he recorded that while 32% of americans lack confidence, that america sore in the correct person as president following the election of 2020, 26% held the same view after the election of 2016. and there is not much overlap between those two groups. here in t

we saw what stacey abrams was able to accomplish in georgia. ultimately, voting and elections are run at the state and local level. it has to be a wake-up call to folks in the state to make sure they are doing what they need to do at their state and local level to have elected officials that are not going to suppress your vote, that are not going to vote for legislation that makes it more difficult to vote, and that you have people there that are doing what they're supposed to do to protect the vote. but at the same time there should be also national, national outcry, to neal's point, because what republicans are doing is absolutely despicable. unfortunately, michael, you and i know this all too well, it is not new. it is just out there in the open now. they are out there saying the quiet parts out loud. when you were rnc chairman you knew what some of the voter suppression efforts were going on out there, and you were trying really hard to make sure those sort of untoward things didn't happen and it was a challenge back then. but now because o
