pete muntean live at reagan national airport. so pete, many people are flying but the airlines expected this. the tickets were getting bought. so why all of the delays and cancellations? >> reporter: it is been so busy at airports across the country, jim. and we'll see if today sets a new pandemic air travel record. 2.2 million people fluew on airline. but now few people are staffing airplanes and that is making it harder to bounce back from maintenance issues and bad weather. look at numbers from flight aware, about 3100 flights yesterday, cancelled about 150 flights. these numbers are a lot better than what they were last week on thursday airlines in the united states canceled or delayed about 10,000 flights in total. now june was a tough month for the airlines so just put this into context. southwest airlines delayed or canceled the most flights of any airline and it is been pleading with flight attendants to pick up extra july 4th trips to alleviate the issues that the airlines are going through. consumer advocates are quit t

pete muntean is working to gather details. tell us what you're learning? >> reporter: jim, we're just getting new information from the federal aviation administration. this was flight 4810, that is a cargo plane. they operate overnight. it had just taken off from the airport in honolulu and bond for -- and the faa tells us that the pilots reported engine trouble and the flight had to go immediately back to the airport in honolulu but ended up short of the runway and having to ditch in the water on the south earth coast of hawaii there. reporting from flight aware, said this flight only made it up to about 1800 feet which is relatively low. if this was a complete power failure, both engines failing on this 737 200, that would have been exceedingly rare. i can't think of a time in recent history when that would have happened other than the miracle on the hudson incident piloted by sully, that was an airbus so a little bit different here. the u.s. coast guard are telling us that two people on board were rescued. one taken to the hospital and the other transpo
