i'm just trying to see how busy it is behind you, pete. what does it look like? >> reporter: it's getting busier, alisyn. now is when the real headache begins, according to aaa. this is when everybody who left town is now coming back into town after the long holiday weekend and aaa anticipates the traffic in some major metro areas like san francisco and boston is about to be three times the norm. aaa forecasted about 43 million americans would travel by car between july 1st and july 5th. that represents about 90% of all travel, and that number is actually about 5% higher than back in 2019, pre-pandemic, so this could be a new record for car travel. but it will be more congested and it will cost more. the average price for a gallon of gas nationwide now above $3 a gallon. it's a dollar higher than where we were in 2020 and a seven-year high. we have not seen prices this high since 2014. one more factor at play here. there is a shortage of tanker truck drivers, making it harder for some smaller stations in some smaller areas to get gas. >> s

pete joins us with this story. pete, if i were on that flight, i think i would have smoke coming out of my head. what happened? >> it's such an interesting case because typically these maskless passenger incidents have to do with one or two people, not 30 teenagers like in this case. american airlines says this all happened on a flight from charlotte to nassau in the bahamas when these teenagers caused a scene. they refused to wear a mask, wouldn't follow crew member instructions and then were kicked off the plane. the worst part is for everybody else onboard. this was scheduled to leave on monday evening. instead got delayed into tuesday, so a big headache and a big inconvenience for all the other passengers. here's what they said. >> some people's vacations were ruined. they were only going for a couple of nights. >> it was bad. firstly they were yelling, they were cussing, they were being very obnoxious. it wasn't all of them. i wouldn't say all of them. i'd say 75% to 80% of them were being terrible kids. sayin

pete muntean is working to gather details. tell us what you're learning? >> reporter: jim, we're just getting new information from the federal aviation administration. this was flight 4810, that is a cargo plane. they operate overnight. it had just taken off from the airport in honolulu and bond for -- and the faa tells us that the pilots reported engine trouble and the flight had to go immediately back to the airport in honolulu but ended up short of the runway and having to ditch in the water on the south earth coast of hawaii there. reporting from flight aware, said this flight only made it up to about 1800 feet which is relatively low. if this was a complete power failure, both engines failing on this 737 200, that would have been exceedingly rare. i can't think of a time in recent history when that would have happened other than the miracle on the hudson incident piloted by sully, that was an airbus so a little bit different here. the u.s. coast guard are telling us that two people on board were rescued. one taken to the hospital and the other transpo
