joe biden's proof of that. if the progressive wing of the party had been taken control of the democratic party completely, joe biden wouldn't be the nominee. there were plenty of other candidates that they supported, and same thing we saw in new york a few days ago with the election there for mayor. it is an important wing. it's got a voice. it's going to be heard. the problem is on the republican side, it's not a wing that's taken over their party. it's an authoritarian movement led and fueled by trump, and the only way to defeat that is if the rest of all of us form a pro-democracy coalition, democrats, republicans, independents. if the press stops covering this as liberals versus republicans, you know, conservatives, democrats, versus republicans and starts to cover this as what it is, a fight for our democracy against an authoritarian movement. one great example of this is how much the press talks about how joe biden has failed to reach his 70% of americans getting their vaccination for the coronavirus. he

joe biden really didn't have an answer. i think i have a couple of issues with joe biden and his policy, one is on marijuana, the other is on voting rights and the filibuster. he's just flat out wrong. and i think it's okay for those of us who support joe biden to be able to be critical and criticize him for not moving this country in the right direction on these issues. the fact is that we must push forward even if we have to do so alone on the issue of voting rights. if lyndon johnson was waiting and playing the same games that joe biden is playing today, we would not have the civil rights act. his inaction, the lack of urgency, the talking about john lewis in one breath but then sitting back and being passive when it comes to getting rid of the filibuster just for this narrow purpose, is just -- it's not what we need when we must have what king called the fierce urgency of now. i love joe biden, i hope he still invites me to the white house christmas parties, but the fact is he's dead wrong on the issue of the filibuster

what would he write about joe biden, given the experience you had writing this book? >> after he was elected, i actually went in search of who was joe biden's first friend. it's a very easy answer. if you ask a hundred people close to the president, they'll tell you it's ted kaufman. i had a chance to talk to ted kaufman at some length. he's very skittish about labeling himself as the first friend but the white house has confirmed that with others. he was his chief of staff for 22 years when the average tenure of a chief of staff now is three years. they not only worked together in washington but they took the train back and forth between wilmington and washington. he has been joe biden's soulmate, his chief political adviser, his consoler in chief when his son beau died. he asked ted kaufman to come to washington and be a special government employee for 120 days. ted kaufman is his closest friend, the first person to have slept in the white house. he's a man who knows his limits. he says, i will not advise the president on policy issues because the issues are too com
