bring in lee ann and jake. let's talk about a little of the housekeeping here. what is your sense where they want to go next for the investigation, regardless whether when we have a new hearing. what does part one look like here? >> reporter: it is a little unclear at this point, chuck. they haven't specifically said. but one thing chairman thompson just said is that he perhaps will bring the committee back for another hearing in august during their recess. despite that there is a seven week break for the house of representatives, we could see movement before the seven week break is over. we know that representative cheney has said that perhaps leader mccarthy should be subpoenaed, said that representative jordan could be a material witness. cheney also said she wants to know minute by minute what happened at the white house that day, so in long term, that could be where we see things go. as far as today is concerned, the clear objective today was to point out the fact that those who have been trying to rewrite the narrative, rewrite the history, are doing exact

jake. i have been saying that the progressives have held their fair for the most part through this process where kyrsten sinema and joe manchin have taken second court almost exclusively. yesterday aoc laying down a marker before this bill goes to the house? >> yeah. so a few thoughts here so this bill is not going to go to the house. it's not going to come up for a vote probably until the fall. so everybody in the house. all the progressives will calm their heels. and the reason why sinema is crucial is what she was basically saying is she won't cote vote for an eventual excise that's at $3.5. event warm compromise at $3.5 probably wouldn't pass the house anyway. so i think she's just expressing a reality, joe, that progressives haven't come to terms with yet. they don't have a 40-seat majority. stay there a three-seat majority. it will not be cooperative in a cumulative infrastructure bill. i think people are% reading this mandate. yes, democrats control washington. they control all three

jake, good morning to you. with two republicanings now serving on this january 6th select committee, can you break down what is going to be the public messaging to basically stay opposed to it? >> well, good morning, jacob. a few thoughts. there's going to be nobody on this committee, nobody at these hearings who's going to be defending donald trump or the republican, the modern republican party. i mean it's going to be a very tricky thing for kevin mccarthy. he has a very bad hand. he's been outmaneuvered by nancy pelosi for several months. he rejected the committee. kevin mccarthy rejected it and senate republicans rejected the committee that gave republicans equal power to democrats, so, you know, they had the opportunity to be involved here. they had the opportunity to investigate in a way that they wanted to, that they said they wanted to, and they didn't do that. >> if they set up what they're threatening to set up is sort of a parallel shadow republican committee, what type of authority or teeth if any a

jake, good morning. good to see you. we know right now there's no path to getting voting rights done in the u.s. congress. that's one of the most emotional and galvanizing issues for democrats. in texas you're seeing republicans focus on voting rights, but they're also discussing the culture war issues that they decided is the fight to fight right now. >> yeah, it is. it's a fight to galvanize a base, a fight to get people out to vote. it's the fight, as you said, kasie, a lot of parties across the country, a lot of local republicans are fighting. by the way, this is not only in localities. it's also on capitol hill, but here's the cold truth, think, for a lot of voting rights activists. in legislatures across the country and in washington, there's one way to get something done and it's with the majority and on capitol hill, a supermajority. but legislation can't be stopped generally speaking if the controlling party has the majority or a controlling number of people. so walking out during the end of the session was an i

jake, i'll start with you. punch bowl news reported that what kind of action can we expect kevin mccarthy to take against liz cheney for joining this panel? and what will he likely do when it comes to appointing members of this panel? is he going to put some of his allies on? >> he'll put people on, ayman that have experience in this area and whoe feels can fight for their position. the house republican conference is unified in defending donald trump and standing against basically unified and standing against a select committee to investigate january 6th. a few thoughts. i don't think mccarthy is going to strip cheney of her committee posts. i think that most republicans think that she'll either lose in the next election or might not even run for election. so i think mccarthy is like from my reporting to let that take course before removing her from a committee. i think frank will you it will be difficult to remove her from a committee for reasons that we don't have go into here. but just strategic and the proc

and jake, in california, what is the situation there on the ground? we've been covering these relent last fires year after year after year, they are coming earlier, they are more frequent. more dangerous. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, that is exactly right. and this is considered a relatively modest fire, one that jumps from about 600 acres to 6,000 acres on friday and now grown to more than 20,000 acres. on the face of it, this is part of the natural cycle of the ecosystem. if you look behind me, you see a pair of tree, one of which still has its needles. that means that it will be able to breathe and heal. the other one burned black all the way to the tips. that means that that tree will not survive, it will not come back. that is part of the natural thinning of the landscape that that fire serves to do. but it is one thing to look at that in this small abstract scale. another thing to see the vastness of this landscape and then if i can show you, the entire valley here, all the way down to a body of water where you can hear helicopters tr

yet the prospects -- and i'll defer to jake on this. the prospects the congress will actually take any meaningful action have to be close to slim and none. again, if new town didn't shock the nation into action, why would we think this would be any different? >> yeah, jake. you know, we've had these shootings now, they're regular. we have them at grocery stores, we've had them at concerts. you know, mass shooters were stopped, they were foiled, people who were likely planning to engage in a mass shooting at the major league baseball all-star game in las vegas. is anybody in congress offering anything other than thoughts and prayers at this point? or is this just something where they sit there and they wait for the news cycle to end, they hope it is not them or their district and we keep moving? >> so, broadly speaking, the answer is no. i mean we've been, as charlie and you both point out, we've been through several cycles, about 15 years or so of -- or 12 to 15 years or so of major gun violence across the country, mass shootings with s

jake, you are on the hill. you have all of the clatter and noise around you. give us a take of what you are hearing. what is the latest you are picking up on the hill? >> well, i'm also not dan riggelman or sam stein or donna edwards, so i apologize. i think a few things. there's a lot to unpack. number one, if mccarthy wanted a committee, and i have said this to him, i have said it in press conferences. if he wanted a committee he had a say on, he could have worked to create this committee that the senate rejected that he had a say on, meaning the real way -- let's take the most cynical point of view, which may or may not be true. i will let you guys decide that, that republicans are going to strictly run interference for donald trump. a lot of people would say that. they had the opportunity to do that because they had veto power over subpoenas on that committee that nancy pelosi had tried to pass, that passed through the house and got stopped in the senate. so, you know, that would have been a really good way for mccarthy to have control. republicans got rid

jake, anna, garrett, thank you all. i want to bring in retired lieutenant general who led review of the capitol security after the riot. and he also led our military's response to hurricane katrina. general, always good to have you here. new capitol police chief says he is glad some of the others are testifying tomorrow. what do you want to hear from them? >> well, we want to hear the truth. everybody in that room that will be questioning them are survivors of the 1/6 attack. so to have a perspective of those who were there with the officers trying to stay alive and protect our democracy. we want to hear the truth. the big problem and challenge we have as you eloquently in the previous interview pointed out is that leader mccarthy and leader mcconnell have taken a position of being disruptive. they have elected not to be in the tent. they have had several opportunities to have a bipartisan commission. and/or committee to look at this 1/6 event. they have elected to be outside the tent and throw rocks at it. and putting

jake, what's the latest with the tamarack fire? >> reporter: geoff, federal officials who saw lightning touch down on july 4th said we're just going to watch this fire, we're not going to intervene. then on friday it went from just a few hundred acres to about 6,000 acres. as of this morning, more than 20,000 acres are on fire. the good news here is this fire is behaving that fire behaves here in california. it's actually part of the ecosystem. most of the vegetation we see around here, as devastated as it looks, has actually survived. you can see leaves at the top. these needles mean this plant can still respirate and come back. that's true of all the trees we see around us. of course there are a few exceptions. the bad news is that letting a fire run its course, as federal officials seem to have chosen to do in this case, also means it's going to run into humanity. we spoke, for instance, to hikers who had been stranded on the pacific crest trail that goes from mexico all the way into canada. several hundred of them at this point

jake, i want to go to you. as this fencing comes down you have brand-new reporting in punch bowl that the capitol police department is essentially running out of money. this is an alarm bell sounded i know as early as last month, right, that funding could expire in august. there were real concerns but now there seems to be added urgency here. tell us about it. >> yeah, a bunch of sources, hallie, that they might have to furlough, dozens if not more if they don't get new funding. remember, the democrats in the house of representatives have passed a security supplemental spending bill that would direct 30 something million dollars to capitol police salaries, that bill is stuck in the senate and, frankly, this is not a one-party issue. both parties are issues with that bill but we are hearing very, very loud alarm bells because of the cash crunch in the capitol police and i think most of the reason here hallie, is because these folks have been working a lot of overtime since january 6th in the capitol nonstop. the

jake, you have been following every twist and turns. we saw it from bernie sanders, miami i talked to privately yesterday, democrats cannot hide their glee with this $3.5 trillion package that includes so many of the objectives they've held for generations. >> that's right. we took a look inside it in punch bowl news what schumer and mcconnell are thinking here. we hit on exactly what you said, willie, this is a party, the democratic party, wanting to do big things for a long time and is finally getting to do big things. few caveats i want to know that are important for everyone to understand. number one, it's not a slam dunk in the senate. but i will say this, no one is drawing a firm red line against this budget blue print, which is a very, very good sign. number two, this is going to be a very heavy list in the house of representatives, a harder lift than in the senate. because nancy pelosi has a three or four depending on how many people are seated, a three or four seat majority in the house of representatives. that means she has ba

let me start with you, jake. perhaps predictable it was going to go this way when jim jordan was placed on the committee. but republicans are acting like two months ago they did not have the chance to create the commission they're lamenting was not created here. a 9/11 style commission. only six republicans voted to create the commission. now here we are with the select committee, which is falling apart before our eyes. what happens next? >> we have an all democratic panel. that's what happens next. >> plus liz cheney. >> that's right. appointed by nancy pelosi who said yesterday she believes mccarthy should never be speaker and agreed with pelosi's decision to remove jim banks and jim jordan from the committee. i don't know what the politics of this are. i think, to be honest with you, willie, if you had to read the lines from the pure political angle, they both kind of got what they wanted. i think mccarthy didn't want to participate in this and wouldn't have created it on his own volition, quite obviously, and

actually, jake, let me start with you. republicans are opposed to the huge reconciliation infrastructure bill. utah republican senator mitt romney appeared to throw up a red flag when it comes to the bipartisan fruk package when he said this to our colleagues earlier. watch. >> the bipartisan plan will only be successful if it's paid for without raising taxes and without adding the debt. and i will only vote for it if we get there. and we're still working on that. the democrats' plan for $3.5 trillion on top of that is without question going to be financed by more debt and higher taxes. that is something i'm going to oppose. my guess is every single republican will oppose it. i think a lot of democrats will oppose it as well. they may get their own twist by their leadership to vote for it anyway. >> so it seems that this is significant given that he helped negotiate the bipartisan plan. what's going on here? will democrats be able to get everyone onboard when it comes to the reconciliation bill? >> so, this is a complicate

people have to be very, very patient, because this is a long bumpy and complicated road. >> about that, jake, i spoke with a white house official a couple of weeks ago who said that they hope to get it passed by september. is that still a realistic time line? >> well, i hope to sleep at 8:00 at night and wake up at 10:00 in the morning, and that does not happen for me frequently. i understand what they hope to happen, and it might happen, but i am not saying it won't happen, but it is very, very, and it is a very lofty goal at this moment, because we are in the middle of july, and congress is off in august and come back in september, and they have government funding and the debt ceiling, so understanding that, if you believe it can be done in september, maybe you are right, but i don't know. i am not trying to be overly skeptical, but i am skeptical given what we have seen on capitol hill in the last 15 years. >> and yamiche, the troops are being pulled out of afghanistan, and how is the president applying the political capital to get everything passed in order to get everything else done on

joining us now is congressman jake, a democrat from massachusetts. he's a retired marine who served in afghanistan. he's one of those 11 members of congress who appeared in the new ad, urging the protection of afghan interpreters and their families. congressman, real pleasure to have you here. thanks for taking the time tonight. >> thanks for having me on, rachel. >> it does feel like this is a very short order demand, and a short order task. reference there in the ad is two days and weeks. what do you think the timeframe is here? do you think this is doable? we >> yes. it's doable. the war on terror has been with me my whole life. i reported on the 9/11 attacks as the editor by middle school paper, joined the marine corps as a platoon commander after college, a few weeks ago as a member of congress i voted to repeal the aumf. i know that's a story shared by many of the veterans who join me in that video with vote vets. we are coming together to make sure america keeps its promise. when i was a platoon commander in afghanistan, i worked with several

to that point, jake, let me pick up on the thread that he is pulling on. the narrow margin, zero room for error for the reconciliation bill. you have somebody like senator kristen saying she's not going to support $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill. her vote will be needed to get it through. what is she trying to do? could this impact the entire process? >> i spent a good chunk of yesterday afternoon trying to figure out what exactly she was saying. you had very little success with her team and we tried to talk to her yesterday evening. we did not -- she was not willing to talk about it. so there is a bunch of different threats she could be making. there is the budget resolution which he just eluded to. the that would require all 50 votes. that is set at $3.5 trillion. i believe she is saying she will vote for that to get started on that process. but a separate process after they pass that budget. so will she pass the budget? i don't know the answer to that. but i think what she is saying is she won't pass -- you have to think of this in two pieces. the bud

so jake who won in the final stretch of the campaign reaching out to democrats and not saying i'm going to vote with nancy pelosi, just saying, remind people susan wright is endorsed by trump and saying he would focus on public education. not get phoo the weeds, an issue in texas races. he's allowed to do that. cochran won in 2014 in part getting democrats to vote for him in the runoff. a futuristic trump universe strategy. blood for growth, emphasizing the trump endorsement pretrending 47% who voted for joe biden did not exist. in a primary only republican voters, you won't have the same issues. to endorse wright, didn't know well. to put some skin in the game without commitment to the campaign was going to run hard, which is really did. did not -- she did not do many interviews or events. he invested in something with a strategy that did not make sense and people are surprised. talked to rick perry a week ago saying it wouldn't happen. the president made a bad decision. of course blames people near the president, not the president himself for making that call. the former president. >>
