you spoke to more than 5,000 people in rural georgia last week. most were not vaccinated because of what you call legitimate and important questions. so what are the concerns? what are you hearing from people? >> yes. so we've been going across the country talking to folks about the importance of covid vaccination, and the number one concerns that people have are really common, important ones. things about safety and about whether or not they might have side effects. people have heard of some of the side effects that are more severe from some of the covid vaccines, and they're concerned about whether those side effects might affect them. so we just have honest conversations so that people know what to expect. >> do they go out and get vaccinated after your talks? do you find that? >> um, we do. we do find that some of the people who call in get vac vacc vaccinated. what we've really been encouraged by is the folks who call in not as individuals but entire families who are on the line. folks whose kids call in for their parents. that's really impor

senate hearing today happening in georgia. you heard that right. the senate rules committee relocated to atlanta for the day to hear testimony about the new restrictive voting law in that state. the committee chair, senator amy klobuchar, joins me now. senator, thank you so much. i appreciate you joining me, i know it's been an extra busy day for you, having to travel. this is the first field hearing held by the rules committee in 20 years. i want to play some of what you heard from witnesses in georgia. here it is. >> one of my colleagues in the house, representative allen cowell, in a committee meeting said to somebody who was testifying, you're correct, it was found, meaning fraud, it's just in a lot of people's minds that there was. he actually said that in a committee meeting. it's really not there, it's just in a lot of people's minds that there was. so this legislation is based on things that are in the imagination in people's minds. >> after an hour and a half of standing outside, we made it inside the building, finally. just to find out th

congressman buddy carter of georgia joins me from savannah. you're a pharmacist and you represent one of the states that has one of the lower vaccination rates. why did you and your colleagues in the medical field feel it was so important to put out this message even though many republicans may not be open to it. >> well, vaccines are the single most life saving innovation in the history of medicine. thanks to operation warp speed, we have a number of vaccines to come on the market in less than a year. i encourage people to get the vaccine, because it is safe and effective. however, i do not think we should be mandating it. this is a decision that should be made by individuals in consultation with their doctor and their families. i believe in the vaccine and i believe it's safe and effective, so much so that as a health care professional and a member of the doctors caucus in congress, i myself went through the clinical trials. i c to set a good example. i'm glad i did. i do believe it is safe and effective. however, i have to stop short of say

is your hearing in georgia going to change that? >> we've seen a concerted effort across the country, you know this, dana, over 400 bills introduced, 28 signed into law, including this really bad one in georgia, that not only denies voters water when they're standing in line, but also reduces the run-off time to 28 days. and guess what? you have to register 29 days before. this is clearly a focus by the republicans in georgia on limiting people from voting. so we're doing this hearing, yes, to build pressure, to pass basic federal voting rights. that is the for the people act. the john lewis bill. you name it. if we were just to concede and say, okay, we have one vote. the republicans blocked it so we're taking our marbles and going home. that's not fair to the people of georgia. that's sure not fair to the people of texas. we're not giving up. there are many ways to proceed here, including the upcoming infrastructure packages that were just discuss ed with senatr portman. i'm happy to answer. i think we need a deadline that senator

we've already seen a suit filed against the laws in georgia. we'll see similar suits against the laws in other states. it's getting harder and harder for doj to prove what we call discriminatory intent or discriminatory effect. so they're fighting a very important battle here but they are facing an uphill battle in the courts. >> right, and if they don't take action in congress and they just choose to pursue this in the courts, that could take just years to wind its way through the legal system. let's turn now to the criminal investigation into the trump organization. earlier this month, the manhattan d.a.'s office charged the company and its cfo with a tax scheme. the prosecutors don't appear to have anyone convinced who works at the trump organization to cooperate against the former president. we've seen this movie before. one viewer asks if prosecutors can't get anyone inside the trump organization to cooperate, can they still bring charges against donald trump. my sense is no. >> i'm very doubtful, jim, i'm with you on this one. it's clear

look at georgia? i think part of what happened in georgia, the reason there are two democratic senators from georgia, at least in part is because the state me a restrictions to voting, and the democratic party and democratic voters stood up and said we're going to vote. >> and the question is, and i go through this all the time with maps where the states did the restrictions and the big midterm races are. what do we know the impact on 2022 in a midterm election where certain states with big senate races or vulnerable house districts, the ones that decide? do they keep the house, the senate? both holding just by strings right now? >> well, look, i think democrats recognize that they need to do a serious education with campaign with their voters so people are aware not only of this as an issue that could galvanize voters but how they can cast their ballot given the restrictions. as phil pointed out, they don't have a lot of plays, cards to play here. it's not nothing feels like it's going to move in con

because a federal judge upheld parts of georgia's restrictive voting law yesterday. last week we saw the supreme court upholding provisions of that arizona gop voting law. how do you think that the supreme court's decision is going to ultimately weigh on the calculus, the political calculation around voting rights moving forward. >> right, i think you'll see this is playing out in the states in much braet greater fashion than here in washington. the supreme court has shown no interest in sort of trying to fortify the voting rights act. they're sort of supporting -- they have decisions that have come down, the recent one in arizona you mentioned, obviously the huge case back eight years ago, the shelby county case where they have chiseled away at the case. and you're not going to see the court doing something and the math is not there in the united states congress. and you mentioned at the top, the biden administration and the vice president meeting behind closed door and meeting with voting rights actives and how passionate the president is about the issue, and he's

let's begin coverage in georgia where new coronavirus cases are up 230% right now. cnn's natasha chen is live dekalb county. one of the new hot spots for covid infections and the surge is already interrupted the start of the new school year at one school, more than 100 kids now in quarantine. bring us up to speed with the latest. >> reporter: right. so the charter school in atlanta started class last tuesday and within a couple of days, they had to inform families of more than 100 students to quarantine and that's because as of friday afternoon, they've had 14 positive cases. that's because they've been actually doing a lot of testing to detect these. employees of theirs required to get tested before the school started and must continue that weekly. students strongly encouraged to test, and so out of about 1900 tests done before tuesday, they detected some positive cases and then a few more after classes started. mostly affected is that sixth grade class. nearly 100 sixth graders in quarantine. eighth graders are the ones having to move classes online because the ei

it's that crazy woman from georgia comparing it to holocaust-era measures. it's one thing after the other. it's congress people not wanting to admit that they've gotten vaccinated. it has led to all of this noise that has really affected republican perception. they have irresponsibly turned it into a source of outrage and a wedge issue that's going to be used to drive people to the polls. the problem is, in the midst of doing that, we've got a delta variant that is killing people again. the problem is, while they remain unvaccinated, they're holding the rest of america hostage. and so if you don't want to wear masks on a plane, get vaccinated. because the rest of us are having to do it because you're not vaccinated. if you don't want your kids to have to wear masks to school, get vaccinated. because the rest of america's kids whose parents are vaccinated are going to have to wear the mask because you're not vaccinated. so, you know, i don't know what it is going to take for people to understand that we are all in this together and to be responsible about the

because just last week the department of justice challenged the new law in georgia. the new vote restrictions in georgia. and i think they knew this was coming from the supreme court. so they did not use the part of the law about discriminatory effects. they used the part of the law that says laws cannot be passed with discriminatory intent. but again, it is important to point out, the supreme court has narrowed the definition of intent as well. made it harder to prove discriminatory intent. and if the broader message of the shelby county case eight years ago, this case today, is that the supreme court is going to make it hard to use the voting rights act. so the chances of success of the department of justice case that was filed against georgia last week, it's not directly effected by the result today, but atmospherically it sure is and i would say the attempt to use the courts to stop voting restrictions is gotten harder today and that is going to effect georgia as well. >> jeffrey, hold tight. we have other breaking news. i want to get your reaction to this hour a

ryan young on the scene for us in georgia. that shooting was part of a surge of gun violence here in the united states over the july 4th holiday weekend. cnn security correspondent josh hammel is working that part of the story for us. it is horrible what's been going on as far as shootings here in the u.s. this past weekend. >> reporter: yeah, wolf. in a scene all too familiar, we saw another violent weekend in the united states with shooting after shooting from coast to coast. take a look at this failure. this is from the gun violence archive. they're reporting there are at least 150 people killed in more than 400 shooting incidents since friday, wolf. just to give you an example, eight people were injured after a shooting near a car wash. one person opened ies telling ut of the victims in this case are innocent bystanders. four children were shot, including a six-year-old girl. police say that incident remains under investigation. we could go on and on, but just to give you other examples, in cincinnati, police say at least
