i asked benny thompson about the time frame. he doesn't know how long it will go. it will go as long as it takes. and what will they investigate? the root causes of this including donald trump's role, including the role of some republican members of congress and conversations that they had with donald trump in the run up to january 6 and january 6 themselves. when i asked benny thompson last night where wl this committee should investigate kevin mccarthy's phone call on january 6, he said that is part of the evidence that needs to be put out as part of the report. last week mccarthy told me he's open to speaking to the select committee. he's speaking to reporters in a matter of minutes. but this could move pretty fast. the question now is what will kevin mccarthy do? will he name members, what kind of members will he name and will they be some who voted to over turn the january 6 electoral results, all questions for republican leader as this investigation begins to take shape. >> kevin mccarthy has five to select. we see pelosi has made the selection of her eight a

joining me right now is the chairman of the house select committee democratic congressman bennie thompson of mississippi. so, we just learned that republican adam kinzinger has in fact accepted the house minority leader kevin mccarthy has already responded saying that this is not going to be a serious investigation and that in his view this is now in step with what he calls the house speaker's plan as a preconceived narrative, the selection of these two. what's your response to that? >> well, obviously, minority leader mccarthy had an opportunity to do another way. as you know, i negotiated a 5-5 no member of congress committee with subpoena power and everything. he turned it down. today is 200 days from january 6th. congress has to do something. speaker pelosi is absolutely correct in doing what she's doing. if republicans want to fix what occurred on january 6th, they'll join the select committee. congressman kinzinger is a good person. he comes with excellent credentials. i look forward to working with him. >> and mccarthy had selected five, house speaker pelosi, you know, cited two of

i know those conversations are taking place led by the speaker, the committee chair, bennie thompson, as well as the other members of the committee. >> and i do want to ask you about the assault on voting rights in the u.s. president biden reiterated his support for the filibuster during our cnn town hall. how could he call this the fight of his presidency when he won't budge on the filibuster? >> well, in my conversations with president biden about a whole host of issues, he's respecting the fact that the house and the senate are separate and co-equal branches of government in terms of the legislative branch. and so it's my expectation that he's going to let the house and the senate work their will, perhaps weigh in at an appropriate moment. i respect the fact that the president concluded that now is not the appropriate moment. but what is clear, and president biden has illustrated this, that something has to be done to push back against the voter suppression epidemic that is taking place all across the country instead of republicans reacting to the violent insurrection, which threat
