buckle up. >>> january 6th house select committee chairman bennie thompson looking forward to the next step in the investigation as questions swirl over the remaining five spots on the committee. one still open after minority leader kevin mccarthy yanked all of his picks yesterday. sources tell nbc news congressman adam kinzinger is possibly under consideration to fill one of those spots. although thompson said he is the kind of person they want to have on the committee, no official announcement has been made. also reportedly under consideration, former gop congressman denver riggelman who would serve as an advisor to the committee and is currently meeting with the speaker in her office. he was supposed to be onset with us to talk but his meeting is apparently running long. they both alike have been outspoken about their party's role in propagating the big lie that lies at the heart of this capitol insurrection. >>> that's where we begin this hour. joining us former congresswoman donna edwards, "washington post" contributing columnist and msnbc contributor. sam stein, white house edito

i also think that nancy pelosi especially and bennie thompson, they both want to make sure this isn't seen as some kind of political farce. that is something they are working very hard to make sure isn't a legitimate attack on what they're doing. that's why they started with these four officers. start with that emotional apea. don't try to go after one of the trump administration officials. go with that emotional appeal. go with and set the stage for what actually happened because a lot of us have been reading all types of testimony. a lot of us have heard from some of the leadership of that day. but this is the first time we really heard from officers who almost got their eyes gouged out, that one tried to come on their side, all of these kinds of things. i think something that moving forward what democrats and liz cheney and adam kinzinger want to do is make sure that they try to stay focused, put on the blinders and try as much as they can to keep the politics out of it. however, i will say we did a playbook event earlier this year with shawn patrick maloney, and he said, even thou

and so if individuals, as chairman bennie thompson has mentioned, if people have information that is pertinent and helpful to us, to our investigation and discussion into this, then we would hope that they would share those stories. but we're only concerned about the causes, the effect, ensuring that this doesn't happen again and what led up to the events of january 6th. so to the extent people have information and knowledge, we would hope that they would voluntarily come forward and share their stories. >> tara, to that point you know when you start to peel an onion, what happens? you start crying, right? it is safe to say mccarthy and republicans aren't going to come forward voluntarily and it could wind up being very frustrating for democrats. what say you? >> well, that's true because there are a handful of republicans there that are basically the proverbial unindicted co-conspirators. the reports there were some members of congress that had given tours beforehand or they were tweeting out locations and encouraging them. we already know what congressmen those are. mo brooks said,

zoe lofgren, bennie thompson, adam schiff is a chair, stephanie murphy, jamie raskin, the lead impeachment manager the second time around, liz cheney, and as we've been discussing adam kinzinger. what is the sort of talk among these members about their goal? does it line up with what claire just described? >> that's a really great question that is being overlooked in a lot of the discussions and the back and forth between mccarthy and pelosi. my colleague and i interviewed them for a piece previewing tomorrow, they told us in extensive interviews they laid out their objectives which are far more serious than how many republicans are going to serve on the select committee. take someone like stephanie murphy, for example, who actually worked at the pentagon in the wake of 9/11 and tried to implement some findings from the 9/11 independent commission from that report. these evidentiary gaps and make sure this doesn't happen again, the lines that were crossed and threatened our democracy. murphy has interesting personal story, her family escaped from vietnam. so she has personal reasons for th
