. >> bennie thompson talked about one of the things, this committee will have subpoena power. how do you think that gets used? there are people who say subpoena trump and those around him. sounds like he is going to start with testimony of capitol police officers. paint a picture for me. as somebody who was an impeachment manager, what does success look like for this committee for you? >> well, i would say i would defer to chairman thompson and his judgment as to how the investigation will proceed. it appears they will start with hearing from members of law enforcement who bravely fought to defend our capitol that day and to protect members of congress and the staff and all of those in the complex. i think that's incredibly important to hear from them first and for them to recount their firsthand experiences. at the end of the day there are a number of remaining questions as to decision making within the department of defense on january 6, decision making at white house, conversations between white house officials and folks at the department of defense, conversations between w

i have complete confidence in chairman benny thompson and all of the members to really review this in depth and get the answers the american people need. what i am looking at, what we're looking at in the oversight committee is very narrow. it's looking at the presidents, and in this case with these documents, documented efforts to illegally influence the department of justice to overthrow -- i can't even hardly say it it's so horrible -- to overthrow our legal election. >> yep. >> these documents were almost unheard of, reverend, rarely do you get documents that include meetings with the president. these are handwritten contemporaneous documents written by the deputy at the department of justice acting, the president said say that it was corrupt. say it is illegal, and when justice pushed back and said that's wrong, that's not right. we don't have any proof of this, he said do it anyway. just say it, and i'll take care of it. it's almost unheard of. we have scheduled meetings with six representatives of the department of justice next week, and we will peel down to the bottom of this.

the democrats, including bennie thompson, the chairman of the select committee, said he has been discussed with the speaker and said that this would be a positive addition. the former congressman riggleman is being looked out as an outside adviser, a republican to help the investigation going forward. this is someone who liz cheney has recommended here. so this is occurring as this committee is staffing up. they have announced key staff hires and planning to move quickly on this investigation once they get through the first hearing next week and map out the investigation for the weeks ahead. >> and it's important to emphasize, this hearing is happening next week. so when liz cheney agreed to be part of the committee, it appeared she would be punished by her party. but what are you hearing now how that will play out in the gop? >> reporter: in talking to a wide range of republicans today, we heard that there's just not much appetite among republican lawmakers to punish liz cheney at this moment. believing that it would amount to a distraction of sorts, as the party tries to retake control o

the chairman of the committee, congressman benny thompson told reporters today that the committee will soon be sending subpoenas, as part of their inquiry. that's not the only investigation going on in congress right now, that could shed light on donald trump's efforts to overturn the election. we know another part of the former presidents scheme to overturn the election was centered around the justice department. to wield the power of the doj to somehow swing the results in trump's favor. there were reports that trump considered ousting his attorney general and replacing him with some that would push his claims about election fraud. trump and his chief of staff brought their claims to the doj leadership demanding that the department investigate the fraud to delegitimized lull joe biden's win. just this week we learned just how extensive this pressure campaign was. washington post reported that trump called his acting attorney general jeffrey rosen almost every day about the so-called fraud in the aftermath of the election. the attorney general's top aide took notes about with the form

we offered, thanks to the negotiation of bennie thompson and john katko, the bipartisan negotiation, a commission that was completely divided in which neither party could issue a subpoena without the acquiescence of the other party. mccarthy didn't want that and he didn't want it because donald trump didn't want it. that's the only criteria for kevin mccarthy. so that was defeated in the senate and it didn't earn that many republican votes in the house. now we have a select committee and he's complaining about the composition of the select committee. you can't have it both ways, but that's what he's trying. in terms of whether any of the people he's contemplating are acceptable or not, i can only hope that he will appoint people that will take the task seriously. i don't care whether they're conservative or not or ultra conservative. what i would hope for are people willing to work in good faith to get to the truth. that has not really been kevin's priority. >> do you think -- so let me just ask you, do you think, congressman, and this is a tough question, right, because people can c

martha: tell me, i know you had conversations with representative benny thompson about what was going to be the matters at hand, what would be discussed. what do you think blew up this commission last week, what was the motivation? >> well, it's more clear than ever that nancy pelosi is not interested in an investigation, she's only interested in a narrative. she claimed that the reason that she booted me from the committee was because of antics on the part of jim jordan and i. in hindsight, what i realize what she means by that now is that we were prepared to ask questions that no one else has asked and demand answer as to why the capitol was vulnerable to an attack on january 6th. why was there a systemic breakdown of security at the capitol on january 6th. if you're going to investigate january 6th, why not ask those questions. and that's all that this comes down to. she already predetermined a narrative about donald trump, about republicans. she doesn't want to talk about what happened at the capitol that day to make sure that something like that never happens again. martha: so yo

thompson indicated they are likely to come back for that but the decision on the topic of that hearing has not been decided and thompson said there would be subpoenas that issued quote soon because he said the idea of asking for information voluntarily sending letters asking information, that's not necessarily the road they will go down on all document requests. instead, they plan to issue subpoenas that and that's something liz cheney said should happen quickly. there is a push to happen quickly and belief this could happen quickly after earlier today the justice department signalled it would not assert executive privilege to prevent former trump officials from testifying before this house committee. now, that is one area, too, in which the democrats and the republicans want to pursue cheney made that clear today, erin, that they do want to look into all the communications that occurred in the runup to january 6th with the trump white house. she said it was key to the investigation but first, they have to understand other areas, as well, the breakdown in intelligence, the failure to c
