thompson. joining me now is capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. speaker pelosi naming liz cheney despite threats of the house republican leader kevin mccarthy and we have that sound from kevin mccarthy reacting. i know you were just covering that. let mae play that and have you comment on the other side. >> i was shocked that she would accept something from speaker pelosi. it would seem to me since i didn't hear from her maybe she's closer to her than us. i don't know. >> garrett, he specifically to your follow-up question saying they're not going to take away her committee assignments and then he said specifically, i don't know in history when someone would go get their committee assignments from the speaker and expect them to have them from the conference, meaning the republicans, as well. is that an implied threat to take retaliatory action against liz chainy? . >> it certainly seems that way it had the feeling of a sort of mob-style -- and they're nice and clear that they'll have to g

>> well, our chairman, bennie thompson, wants to make sure that we are coordinating with the justice department and has made outreach to the department. as a committee, we have not yet met with the justice department. i'm not sure whether our chairman has any discussions of his own. but as we have in other investigations, we want to make sure that we're working collaboratively with the department, that nothing we do, for example, interferes with their investigation and prosecution of suspects. at the same time, they possess information that will be of great value to us, so we need to have an open line of communication. >> what's your sense of what the most important piece of evidence that the doj may have to your investigation? is it the call logs of the former president >> well, the department is obviously investigating and prosecuting these individual cases. and they may get some of these folks to cooperate. and if you have a cooperating witness, for example, who is within one of these white nationalist groups, the oathkeepers or the proud boys or what not, and they can describe th

and it was bipartisan in terms of the committee and i salute our chairman, benny thompson, and the ranking member. even though it was something that was bipartisan and yielded on many points to the republicans in order to achieve bipartisanship, the leadership of the republican party in the house opposed and went against the bipartisan commission. still, in all, we had the votes. 35 members in the republican side voted with us to send it to the senate. it was very hopeful that we could pass it there. seven republican votes, not ten. and we needed ten to get up to 60. hopefully, one day, that opportunity will still present itself. but because it was not possible in this timeframe, last month we passed our legislation for a select committee. a select committee is bipartisan and it has a quorum and will do the job it sets out to do. that is to investigate the causes and that of what happened on january 6th to find out how it was organized, who paid for it, who messaged to get those people here for the assault on the capitol. well over 100 people were injured. some died. it was a horrible, hor

representative benny thompson, the top democrat on the committee is giving an opening statement tomorrow and so is representative liz cheney, a republican who is on this committee, of course, she's his pick by speaker pelosi. another member, representative jamie raskin told me the other day that representative cheney is not a formalized role that she is going to be the ranking republican, but it seems obvious, because she is the top republican, she was at the time the only republican, now we have a second, representative adam kinzinger, whose sources told me he wants this position. he wanted to be on this committee. he's like-minded on this issue as representative cheney and even speaker pelosi. so that position was formalized just yesterday, and all of this is happening as they are set to hold their first hearing just tomorrow, with two members of capitol police and two members of the d.c. metropolitan police, all four of these police officers have been on the front lines and this will be the first time congress will formally hear from rank and file police officers who experienced that
