you heard committee chair benny thompson said nothing is off limits. do you think he'd go as far as to call donald trump to testify? >> i think he would. i served on the house committee back in 2010 with benny thompson. i thought he was very fair. he works very closely with john cat koe, who's the ranking republican. i do think benny thompson will go where the facts lead him. they're going to ask hard questions. anything is on the table right now. i wouldn't be surprised if members of congress could be asked to testify before this select committee in the event they had any role with some of the insurrectionists. i hope they didn't, but it's a real possibility. i think benny thompson will pull the trigger if he has to. >> opinions seem to be so baked in on what happened on january 6th for so many americans. is there anyway these hearings can break through that? >> we certainly hope so. this committee will have added credibility if the democrats defer to cheney and kinzinger who can set a proper tone for these proceedings and make these as nonpartisan as

i asked benny thompson about the time frame. he doesn't know how long it will go. it will go as long as it takes. and what will they investigate? the root causes of this including donald trump's role, including the role of some republican members of congress and conversations that they had with donald trump in the run up to january 6 and january 6 themselves. when i asked benny thompson last night where wl this committee should investigate kevin mccarthy's phone call on january 6, he said that is part of the evidence that needs to be put out as part of the report. last week mccarthy told me he's open to speaking to the select committee. he's speaking to reporters in a matter of minutes. but this could move pretty fast. the question now is what will kevin mccarthy do? will he name members, what kind of members will he name and will they be some who voted to over turn the january 6 electoral results, all questions for republican leader as this investigation begins to take shape. >> kevin mccarthy has five to select. we see pelosi has made the selection of her eight a

democrats who serve on the committee are supportive of going that route including the chairman benny thompson who told me yesterday that adding kinzinger would be a good addition in his view, this coming after of course, pelosi naming liz cheney, both cheney and kinzinger were the only two to vote to create the select committee but they would be defied kevin mccarthy who pulled back all five of his picks this week after pelosi vetoed two of the republican picks because of her concerns she said that they would undermine the integrity of the investigation. but kinzinger has no qualms about angering kevin mccarthy. he's made clear he's willing to do it. he's indicated that for months and both kinzinger and cheney have been the foremost critics of donald trump and what happened on january 6. so the expectation that she was trying -- that pelosi is looking to add more bipartisan credence to this committee, not just by potentially adding kinzinger which it looks like she will do, but also adding outside advisers who are republicans like denver riggleman who met with staff yesterday. this i

chairman bennie thompson essentially set a deadline when he announced that the first public hearing for this panel would be july 27th. this would be their first time to hear directly from capitol police officers publicly in a hearing and he is putting the pressure on mccarthy to appoint his five members before then. and to complicate things, house minority leader kevin mccarthy traveled to meet with who other than former president donald trump at the center of all of this in bedminster, new jersey, on thursday. and while he did release a statement and say that they talked about the midterms, the house select committee was not part of the statement and that it was a -- inferred they did not discuss this. so we know he is going to appoint five members. the question is, who is he going to appoint? we know that he is going to appoint, sources told us, five members to this panel who are loyal and will defend former president donald trump. but don't expect conservative fire brands like marjorie taylor greene and matt gaetz to be a part of this. so we expect someone -- expect people to be appo
