joining me now is arizona secretary of state katie hobbs. a democratic candidate for arizona governor. to good to see you, secretary. so your attorneys argued to the court that these two measured disenfranchise voters of color and violated section two of the voting rights act. and let me remind people, the provisions would not allow ballots to be cast outside of voter precincts or allowed to have spun else to return a completed ballot. so the supreme court majority ruled against you. what is your reaction to that? >> well, this was an expected outcome. but what this ruling underscores is that urgent need for action at the state and federal level to protect voting rights. and what we're seeing right now is a move across country to go in the opposite direction. and in that context, this decision is very harmful and it is going to make it harder for anyone to be able to challenge discriminatory voting laws. >> and so like you said, this is not just about arizona. there are at least 14 other states that have passed laws restricting voting access

maricopa is arizona's most populous county. county supervisors there reportedly got texts and phone calls as votes were being counted and later as the votes were being contested. here are two of those voice mails from rudy giuliani, one to clint hickman, who is the chair of the maricopa county chair of supervisors at the time, and another to bill gates. the music you'll hear underneath the call was added by the arizona republic in their online story. >> this is rudy giuliani. i was very happy to see this is going to be forensic audit of the machines. i really wanted to talk to you about it. the president wanted me to give you a call, all right? thank you. give me a call back. i would really appreciate. hello. it's rudy giuliani, president trump's lawyer. if you get a chance, would you please give me a call? i have a few things to talk over with you. maybe we can get this thing fixed up. it's a shame republicans are in this situation. i think there may be a nice way to resolve this for everybody. so, give me a call, bill. i'm on

moved out of the coliseum, brought across the arizona state fair grounds on these trucks and delivered to a storage facility. and now look at this next video clip. and this is from about a week ago. this facility looks like you'd expect, storage, ballots are all boxed up. there's nothing happening. it looks like a ring camera. well, suddenly, there was activity. this morning, if you look at this next video clip, suddenly, there were two counters, they're paper counters that were delivered. and we are now told it's not a hand count, it's a machine count. these machines are going to count each ballot. they're not going to look at what's on the ballot. they're just going to count the ballot. the arizona audit spokesman tells me is the reason they're doing this is to double and triple check what the contractor has done, cyber ninjas. he's calling it basically cleaning up. what does that mean? i don't know. i've talked to a number of people. maricopa election officials and national officials, and they're scratching their heads saying they just don't know what's happening, anderson. >> just

republican congressman paul gosar of arizona, a member of congress who should be far more famous than he is. he writes, it is unjust to sweep ashli's death under the rug. her life mattered. we do not allow the execution of citizens by street justice in our country. babbitt is the 35-year-old woman who attempted to charge into the speaker's lobby where members of congress were present at that moment on january 6th with a violent mob breaking down windows, braying for blood at her back. when rioters broke the windows of these doors right there leading to the lobby, which is right outside the house chamber, ashli babbitt and her alone vaulted through, the first one to go through, though there was a gun drawn and a warning, and she was shot and killed by a capitol officer that you see there on the other side. her death is obviously a horrible tragedy. it never should have happened. she never should have been there. she never should have been in that position. the key question is not who killed her but who is truly culpable for her death and the deaths of three other trump supporters that

i want to start with this arizona stuff. i mean, we've known for a long time, obviously, that the president has been interested in getting states to basically find the votes that he needed in order to win. what went on in arizona, i think, highlights the big challenge. it didn't end after election day. it didn't end after the inauguration. we have an audit going on there. and this is a little bit from giuliani's voice mail to one of the republican arizona officials. he says to him, if you get a chance, would you pleads give me a call. i have a few things i'd like to talk over with you. maybe we can get this thing fixed up. i think it's a shame republicans are both kind of in this situation, and i think there may be a nice way to resolve this for everybody. this is like the kind of thing that you would see in a gangster movie or something like that. but it's happening in american elections. what does this matter at this point given that this is the predicate for voting restrictions that are coming down the pike in states like

today, arizona republicans who are doing their so-called audit in arizona, they gave a briefing on their progress. only two republican senators were there, but they tried to call it a hearing. this was -- this audit that they're doing in arizona, they launched it in april. they said it would take three weeks. it's, of course, now mid-july, and they're still going strong. they made clear today that they're definitely finding all of the fraud they have been fantasizing about, but it's definitely going to take lots more investigation, lots more materials, probably lots more donations from trump supporters nationwide. it looks like they will subpoena more stuff from the county, maricopa county, where they got all these ballots from. the way they were talking about it today, it sounds like they think they have weeks to go, maybe months still to go. it's such a big complex investigation. there's no sign actually that there was anything wrong with the presidential vote in arizona. nothing. there's no sign that there was anything wrong with it. at all. and i'm saying that not just like, because

one of the important things to remember about the arizona restriction voting laws that were upheld by the supreme court is arizona admitted the reason why they were doing this was to influence the election. they admitted that these restrictions disproportion at ly affected people of color. they can't win if they let everybody vote. this is actually an existential crisis for the republican party because if everybody votes, the republicans can't win. the republicans have abandoned building any kind of coalition beyond their white supremacist base. so if that white supreme sis base is diluted in any way, they have no plans to expand their race or policies to appeal, so this is their way. this is their only way to win elections. it's by keeping people away from the voting. >> well, but let me just respond to that and come to you. i think the republicans think that about themselves. it kind of hilariously is a poor judgment on themselves that they think that. look at 2020. historically high turnout, right? the republicans didn't get blown out. in fact, there were four congressional seats i
