donald trump is going to arizona. while a team of volunteers spent weeks scouring ballots for proof they were shipped in they were from overseas here's a news flash that trump did not spend a single dollar from the $75 million raised from the pac for this audit or another ballot review across the country so it seems the team realizes nothing is going to reverse the results 0 of this election. yet here we are 263 days after the votes were cast with very few republicans willing to publicly accept there's no hail mary in arizona. let's check in with kung law there in phoenix. >> reporter: still pretty lively right now as this place is beginning to fill up. this is an indoor theater and expected in a few hours is donald trump to headline this entire event why the atmosphere here when you go around and talk to people here to see trump is absolute refusal to accept the election results. when you talk to them and ask them what they think happened in november 2020, they don't believe what happened. instead they parrot the lie

democrats challenge two arizona rules. one, that tosses out ballots when voters show up at the wrong pre precinct. the ruling was 6-3. that a reflection of the court's powerful conservative majority and it sends a clear signal this court believes states get wide latitude in the voting rules. we are joined with the big final day decisions. >> very big, indeed. and the take away from this is that this is going to make it a lot harder for challengers of these voting laws to actually prevail here. because in this 6 3 decision written, this didn't just uphold the arizona laws that have been in effect for many years. but this restricted the ability of challengers to really challenge section 2. and the reason why this is so important is that really section 2 is the only way now for these people to challenge these voting laws. that's because in 2013, the supreme court struck down essentially section 5 of the voting rights act. that was a section that mandated that jurisdictions with the history of racial discrimination, they neede

joining me now is arizona secretary of state katie hobbs. a democratic candidate for arizona governor. to good to see you, secretary. so your attorneys argued to the court that these two measured disenfranchise voters of color and violated section two of the voting rights act. and let me remind people, the provisions would not allow ballots to be cast outside of voter precincts or allowed to have spun else to return a completed ballot. so the supreme court majority ruled against you. what is your reaction to that? >> well, this was an expected outcome. but what this ruling underscores is that urgent need for action at the state and federal level to protect voting rights. and what we're seeing right now is a move across country to go in the opposite direction. and in that context, this decision is very harmful and it is going to make it harder for anyone to be able to challenge discriminatory voting laws. >> and so like you said, this is not just about arizona. there are at least 14 other states that have passed laws restricting voting access

this is rudy giuliani essentially saying the exact same thing in arizona. and what this tells me, victor, is this was part of a coordinated effort by donald trump and rudy giuliani to interfere with and overturn the election results in those two states and potentially elsewhere. these are crimes. let's be clear. it's a federal crime. it's a georgia crime, an arizona crime to try to convince an official to count votes that were not actually cast or not to count votes that were actually cast. this is serious stuff. we know the d.a. in georgia is investigating, and now we have to see whether the authorities, the prosecutors in arizona do the same thing. i think they ought to. >> the more we -- the more evidence that comes out and the more we hear about this pressure campaign to overturn donald trump's election loss, you realize the intestinal fortitude and steel spine it took for these local election officials to not return the call of the president of the united states or his attorney. and by the way, now, as we know, there are all of these laws in all of the

ward targeted arizona election officials with a pressure campaign, according to "the arizona republic." but inlike in georgia where the gop secretary of state recorded a call with the president, the keymar -- key maricopa county election official refused to speak to trump. ron brownstein joins us. why are these latest revelations significant to you? >> happy fourth to you and everybody watching. i think there are two real important conclusions that come out of these revelations in arizona. one is that we simply do not know all the ways in which donald trump used and abused his power as president. it just underscores the need for a more comprehensive understanding of what he did in office. and all of the ways in which he may have gone beyond the proper boundaries of the use of presidential power, especially given that he may ask the country to restore it to him again in a little over three years. i was talking to our colleague john dean a couple of weeks ago for a story i was writing. he noted that when nixon left office, we had so much of a better idea of everything that had happened

>> reporter: a truly brazen and deadly act of violence jechl in tucson, arizona. a 35-year-old murder suspect is in custody and in critical condition after a shootout with police. authorities believe the suspect set a fire at a residence and then went to a nearby park where he flagged down two emts, he began pointing in the direction of the fire, and without warning, brandished a firearm and shot at the medics, hitting one of them in the head, shooting another in the arm and the chest. police say as that shooting was taking place at the nearby park, fire personnel were already responding to the fire at the residence. the suspect then went there and started shooting at firefighters. one neighbor was struck and killed. a firefighter and another bystander were shot and sustained nine life-threatening injuries. as this was going down, firefighters radioed to the police that they were receiving gunfire. the suspect fled. this is how that ended according to the police chief, that encounter. take a listen. >> he rams the vehicle, disabling the police car. the officer sta

now there are no good options for this audit here in arizona. it was -- first of all, it was unnecessary. our republican county board of supervisors, which is 4-1 republican conducted two audits using election assistance commission approved companies, bipartisan commission, non-partisan professional companies two audits confirmed we had a fair election here in maricopa county. it was no purpose to begin with but since it's been a conclusion in search of evidence and now that no evidence of fraud or error has been detected, they've taken to inventing statistics and facts made up out of thin air about more ballots received than requested, which of course is thoroughly debunked. there is no good resolution for this. when i started, there is no good that can come out of this. >> here is the thing, when this audit and, you know, i put the quotes around it, when this is done, whatever it's done, it been going on and on and still goes on and on and there is an outcome and what chris said is powerful. you can go off the cliff or jump off the train going

it's even more absurd because the audits were done in arizona and found no fraud. so take a step back. look at the results of these audits and recounts and republican-led investigations in eight states. and you'll see there is just no actual evidence of mass voter fraud. there is only the desperate attempt to keep doubt alive, to please donald trump at the expense of our democracy. and if you're still not solved, remember how fast fox news and newsmax backtracked when threatened with lawsuits. bill barr thought trump's claims were -- and look at the top lawyer describing trump's legal team as a joke. that was getting them, quote, laughed out of court because of wishful thinking. if you believe their claims, i'm sorry to say the joke's on you. of course, the real insult is to our democracy. that's a causal real patriots should rush to defend. and that's your reality check. >> john, let me ask you, we've had a number of authors on today about this period. the friday after election day there was not a single white house aide or trump campaign official or pollster who

now, the good news at least for states like arizona and new mexico, we're hoping the rain in the forecast today can help firefighters contain some of those fires. the concern really is for the rest of the states, especially places like montana, idaho and even oregon where they are not expected to see the rain that some of their counterparts in the southwest are. overall to date the u.s. has had about 36,000 total u.s. wildfires, total area burned 2.7 million acres. we are ahead of pace from where we were last year and 2020 was an awful year for wildfires. one of the specific fires, the large fires that we've been saying close attention to is the bootleg fire in oregon now burning over 400,000 acres. they were able to make a little bit of improvement in the containment earlier this week. the hope is we can keep those winds down to allow those firefighters to continue making good jumps in the containment. one thing to note, though, is how far the smoke from a lot of those wildfires actually spreads. take a look at this, chicago, st. louis, cincinnati dealing with code orange air quality ale

the recent ruling in the arizona case is a perfect example of where even president carter at one time said that the biggest problem, the biggest potential for cheating in elections is through absentee ballots. even he said that. that was part of the reasoning for the arizona decision there. >> if you're going to apply that principle, then that same principle would have to apply in the other states that trump won, north carolina, texas, ohio. if you look at the voter fraud and so forth and the amount of it, if you look at that, it's less than .001%, meaning that the election itself from all we know was like 99.99% successful with eligible voters having their voices heard through their vote. that's pretty good, is it not? >> what i know is this, is that the changes made to the election process in the state of georgia were made by the executive branch without the approval of the legislative branch. our constitution is perfectly clear that it should be made by the legislative branch. that's why i applaud the georgia state legislature for the election integrity act that makes voting easier

and at issue were the two arizona laws. one said that if you cast a ballot in the wrong precinct, it has to be wholly discarded. and the second said -- had to do with restrictions on who could deliver a ballot to the polling place. it said only family members, close family members and really was more restrictive there. and a lower court said both of these laws had an impact on minorities and struck them down under the voting right act. and today a justice writing about a 6-3 majority, and that's breaking down along ideological lines. he said the laws were okay. and what's really important about it is his reasoning. you heard echoes of what the conservatives have been saying, what president trump is saying. that states have a right to pass laws to combat voting fraud. and so what this means is now the court today has limited the reach of section 2, and it comes as states across the country are passing more and more restrictive laws. so it should have a big impact in the near future. >> yeah. for georgia, to florida, to texas
