joining our discussion now is democratic senator amy klobuchar of minnesota. she is the chair of the senate rules committee which has oversight over federal elections. senator, i hope you were listening earlier because i was trying to do some staff work for you with latosha brown who knows georgia well and knows that election law well on what you should be aiming for in georgia. what do you hope to accomplish in georgia? >> well, i think she had some great advice, and that is to allow the people like helen, people like the voter, the veteran who stood in line for three hours, the state senator who fought this tooth and nail, let them do the talking, because what we're going to hear is the reason that helen butler was removed from her post, and that is because there is a concerted effort not only in georgia, but in texas, as you just heard from the state senator, to basically take away people's freedom to vote, lawrence. and one of the -- i think many of us are focused on the provision in the bill that said you can't give water to voters in line. of course, an

>> senator amy klobuchar today chaired a u.s. senator hearing that was uprooted from washington and moved to georgia and held in georgia instead. this is the first time the rules committee and the senate has held a field hearing in 20 years. but senator klobuchar decided that the issue of voting rights was worth hitting the road for. to go understand in person what's new republican installed voting restrictions mean on the ground in states where they're being enacted. so the committee, at least the democrats on the committee who showed up, republicans didn't show up for this. but democrats on the committee heard testimony from georgia voters an election officials including helen butler who you just heard from their. she served on the board of elections on her rural county in georgia for more than ten years, until this year when a provision in georgia's restrictive new voting law allowed local republican officials to remove her from the board this month so they could take full partisan republican control over her counties election

amy klobuchar, thanks so much for joining us klobuchar. it looks like that bus might be coming your way and i saw that some of these people want to talk to it about you. what did you have to tell them as they arrive in washington? >> well, i have met with representatives when she was here last time and i believe that they're doing what's right. they are trying to stand up for whatever way possible for the freedom of people to vote and they're coming to the very place that they're supposed to find salvation. and i really actually like the trip johnson, along with vice president hunt -- protect civil rights in the sixties. when you have a conservative effort across the country, but in georgia and in other places, it doesn't stay have passed voter suppression's laws to limit people's freedom to vote. and you know the answer should be in washington, where the constitution clearly says that a new congress has the right to make or alter our federal elections. if i don't know it causes greater than doing that right now, this is the moment to get

the committee chair, senator amy klobuchar, joins me now. senator, thank you so much. i appreciate you joining me, i know it's been an extra busy day for you, having to travel. this is the first field hearing held by the rules committee in 20 years. i want to play some of what you heard from witnesses in georgia. here it is. >> one of my colleagues in the house, representative allen cowell, in a committee meeting said to somebody who was testifying, you're correct, it was found, meaning fraud, it's just in a lot of people's minds that there was. he actually said that in a committee meeting. it's really not there, it's just in a lot of people's minds that there was. so this legislation is based on things that are in the imagination in people's minds. >> after an hour and a half of standing outside, we made it inside the building, finally. just to find out that the line inside the building was just as long as the line outside the building. we were able to handle those three hours standing in line but we know not everybody can. >> so what else did you hear today, and will

thank you for coming back to "the sunday show" amy klobuchar. why are you in georgia? >> i'm chair of the senate rules committee, jonathan. we decided why stay in washington when all these bills are being enacted all over the country. over 400 have been introduced to mimic people's freedom to vote and i'm not sure everyone knows this, but over 20 of them, 28, to be exact, have actually become law. part-time focussed on not getting water and long lines we'll have a voter testify at the hearing on monday about what happened to him but the law is even worse than that. limits on one-off voting where, you know, senator warnock won their run yaf and now saying the runoff can only take 28 days. you can't vote on the weekends before it. and you have to register 29 days in advance. when there's a runoff, you can't register at any time during the runoff. just giving you a few of the examples. drop off limits, mail in ballot limits. that's the reason legislators in georgia and the two u.s. senators have bravely stood up against the law. that's why we're bringing the rules committ

>> well, if you really believe this is as important as amy klobuchar and other democrats say it is, of course this is what they should be doing. they should be shining a light on this issue in any way they can if it is an existential threat to our democracy. the question though is whether the prospects or the senate actually agreeing to do anything about the voter suppression that is taking place, and right now, those prospects are dim. we should be honest. unless manchin and sinema and perhaps others move on the question of what to do with the filibuster, there is no way that there are 60 votes in the senate for any sort of federal voting legislation. now, that was once the case with the civil rights act of 1965. so it is not as if, you know, it can never happen. but it is not happening right now. >> well, i mean that is really the problem, right? so we see state after state after state where there are problems and i was in austin on opening day of the session, not this special session, but the session, and all of the lawmakers, democratic lawmakers i talked to, said this is where our

klobuchar and raphael warnock is asking for a mandate of 15 days for voting and mandates at least two sundays people can vote souls to the polls, a national extension of mail-in voting, national voter identification requirement and a provision that would require super pacs to disclose identities of bigger donors. basically it's a more narrow version of the for the people act, the sweeping voting rights bill that democrats have come out in support of. even so, with this narrow bill being discussed, it's still unclear how this doesn't boil down to a fight about the filibuster even if garners support of all democratic senators in the senate. they still need the support of ten rupp votes, and considering the opposing side of this is the began vallizing issue of the republican party. that's probably unlikely to happen without scrapping the filibuster entirely. >> there's certainly calls on the left do that and many are reluctant to take that extreme, in their words, step. jackie, we just heard the president speak rather emotionally about those who have yet to get vaccinated. we saw him unr

would you include budget reconciliation about senator amy klobuchar mentioned it. jim clyburn said the same thing. you would rule out using budget reconciliation? >> i'm not here to rule anything out. as it relates to budget reconciliation. there is going to be a lot of work done over the next week or two as you know. writing that legislation and what they want in there, we'll see how had a plays out. >> when joe manchin says they oppose changing the filibuster because they believe everything should be done in a bipartisan way, even though republicans are getting rid of voting rights in a very partisan way, they're wrong about that, right? i just want to confirm the president does not share their view that reforming the filibuster or protecting voting rights needs a republican buy in. >> well, first i would say the president has never advocated for changing the filibuster. he said he's -- he supports changing to a talking filibuster. he believes though that voting rights is a fundamental right, something he wants to sign into law and pass into law. so, yes, of cour
