joining our discussion now is democratic senator amy klobuchar of minnesota. she is the chair of the senate rules committee which has oversight over federal elections. senator, i hope you were listening earlier because i was trying to do some staff work for you with latosha brown who knows georgia well and knows that election law well on what you should be aiming for in georgia. what do you hope to accomplish in georgia? >> well, i think she had some great advice, and that is to allow the people like helen, people like the voter, the veteran who stood in line for three hours, the state senator who fought this tooth and nail, let them do the talking, because what we're going to hear is the reason that helen butler was removed from her post, and that is because there is a concerted effort not only in georgia, but in texas, as you just heard from the state senator, to basically take away people's freedom to vote, lawrence. and one of the -- i think many of us are focused on the provision in the bill that said you can't give water to voters in line. of course, an

>> senator amy klobuchar today chaired a u.s. senator hearing that was uprooted from washington and moved to georgia and held in georgia instead. this is the first time the rules committee and the senate has held a field hearing in 20 years. but senator klobuchar decided that the issue of voting rights was worth hitting the road for. to go understand in person what's new republican installed voting restrictions mean on the ground in states where they're being enacted. so the committee, at least the democrats on the committee who showed up, republicans didn't show up for this. but democrats on the committee heard testimony from georgia voters an election officials including helen butler who you just heard from their. she served on the board of elections on her rural county in georgia for more than ten years, until this year when a provision in georgia's restrictive new voting law allowed local republican officials to remove her from the board this month so they could take full partisan republican control over her counties election

amy klobuchar, thanks so much for joining us klobuchar. it looks like that bus might be coming your way and i saw that some of these people want to talk to it about you. what did you have to tell them as they arrive in washington? >> well, i have met with representatives when she was here last time and i believe that they're doing what's right. they are trying to stand up for whatever way possible for the freedom of people to vote and they're coming to the very place that they're supposed to find salvation. and i really actually like the trip johnson, along with vice president hunt -- protect civil rights in the sixties. when you have a conservative effort across the country, but in georgia and in other places, it doesn't stay have passed voter suppression's laws to limit people's freedom to vote. and you know the answer should be in washington, where the constitution clearly says that a new congress has the right to make or alter our federal elections. if i don't know it causes greater than doing that right now, this is the moment to get

peter: so let's go to the democratic side, senator amy klobuchar. you write that she's trying to change the definition of what antitrust should be. elizabeth: yes, again, this comes back to the consumer harm standard, which they don't want consumer harms to be the sort of lone star antitrust law anymore. they want antitrust laws to be concerned with, his behavior just being anticompetitive? is it harming competitors, instead of which is it harming consumers? which would be a big change because anything a company does to improve its product or expand its line of business or attract new customers could be seen as harming competitors. that's why you have the house antitrust report saying things like, google changed its search engine, changed its search algorithm. that may have had the effect of making it harder for others to compete. but that also makes it better for people who are using google. so a lot of the times, you see klobuchar and morris kind of saying any these companies do things, change their business model otto, that it's been -- at all, t

the committee chair, senator amy klobuchar, joins me now. senator, thank you so much. i appreciate you joining me, i know it's been an extra busy day for you, having to travel. this is the first field hearing held by the rules committee in 20 years. i want to play some of what you heard from witnesses in georgia. here it is. >> one of my colleagues in the house, representative allen cowell, in a committee meeting said to somebody who was testifying, you're correct, it was found, meaning fraud, it's just in a lot of people's minds that there was. he actually said that in a committee meeting. it's really not there, it's just in a lot of people's minds that there was. so this legislation is based on things that are in the imagination in people's minds. >> after an hour and a half of standing outside, we made it inside the building, finally. just to find out that the line inside the building was just as long as the line outside the building. we were able to handle those three hours standing in line but we know not everybody can. >> so what else did you hear today, and will

thank you for coming back to "the sunday show" amy klobuchar. why are you in georgia? >> i'm chair of the senate rules committee, jonathan. we decided why stay in washington when all these bills are being enacted all over the country. over 400 have been introduced to mimic people's freedom to vote and i'm not sure everyone knows this, but over 20 of them, 28, to be exact, have actually become law. part-time focussed on not getting water and long lines we'll have a voter testify at the hearing on monday about what happened to him but the law is even worse than that. limits on one-off voting where, you know, senator warnock won their run yaf and now saying the runoff can only take 28 days. you can't vote on the weekends before it. and you have to register 29 days in advance. when there's a runoff, you can't register at any time during the runoff. just giving you a few of the examples. drop off limits, mail in ballot limits. that's the reason legislators in georgia and the two u.s. senators have bravely stood up against the law. that's why we're bringing the rules committ

do you think there's some teeth to what amy klobuchar is trying to do? >> i would hope so. i think the challenge, ali with all of these things is to get the definition right. one person's misinformation is another person's fact. i'm going to push back on brandy, i don't think facebook perceives it as their mission to get rid of disinformation. i think in fact what they're trying to do is create the appearance of getting rid of disinformation while leaving the infrastructure in place. remember what happened when they deplatformed alex jones. alex jones was a terrible promoter of conspiracy theories and he built up a grifting business on facebook. facebook deplatformed. how long did it take before there were hundreds of people competing for alex jones' attention, for the attention that he used to get who stepped forward and conspiracy theories continued to grow. in fact, qanon really exploded on facebook after alex jones had been removed, and so i think the core issue here is that these things are disinformation machines. they are hate speech machines and conspiracy theory ma

amy klobuchar spoke about her effort to get him onboard. i want you to listen. >> number one is to get republicans. i don't think that's going to happen. the second thing is, well, senator manchin has indicated some interest in the standing filibuster. that's one way to do it. we could have it focused on voting rights only. we are continuing to work with him and many others to get this done. >> i wonder if you agree. and if you are hopeful that he could move on this issue. >> well, of course. i'm hopeful that he will, you know. we have people pushing for voter legislation, including his colleagues. something that will allow voting rights legislation to get passed. you can draw that line because it all started with the big lie, trump's lie about massive voter fraud in the 2020 election. the pinnacle of that was on january 6th. we saw the disastrous consequences of that. and then, we saw more consequences in the spring, as state legislature after state legislature, passed legislation to suppress voting rights in texas, and georgia, and other

>> well, if you really believe this is as important as amy klobuchar and other democrats say it is, of course this is what they should be doing. they should be shining a light on this issue in any way they can if it is an existential threat to our democracy. the question though is whether the prospects or the senate actually agreeing to do anything about the voter suppression that is taking place, and right now, those prospects are dim. we should be honest. unless manchin and sinema and perhaps others move on the question of what to do with the filibuster, there is no way that there are 60 votes in the senate for any sort of federal voting legislation. now, that was once the case with the civil rights act of 1965. so it is not as if, you know, it can never happen. but it is not happening right now. >> well, i mean that is really the problem, right? so we see state after state after state where there are problems and i was in austin on opening day of the session, not this special session, but the session, and all of the lawmakers, democratic lawmakers i talked to, said this is where our

there is room to get some work across the aisle and the subcommitteemm that amy klobuchar chairs with her own antitrust proposal good, ground i also propose to go farther than senator klobuchar has but have a hard stand on mergers and acquisitions those have a market cap of 100 billion or more to change the standard the courts evaluate antitrust cases. promoting competition ought to be the standard courts use the consumer welfare standard which i think is too deferential in practice i think we got to change the standard because those are two major areas where my bill is tougher and stronger but i think we need to have a debate on howo we can cut these monopoly corporations down to size but still we see economic concentration and we need to confront that. >> you mentioned changing the standards for antitrust litigation. can you bring other conservatives around to that idea? and also said it's a nonstarter for them. >> it is able to move absolutely as i talked to conservatives traditionally on principle is brief of the free market and competition those who define themselves as economic
