>> kari, that's still going on in the south bay. let's start with that, because it does involve a closure of an expressway. lawrence expressway is closed south of 280 on the border between cupertino and san jose officially in san jose as folks know, including archbishop, mitty high school at mitty way where the police investigation continues. actually police and sheriff working together for traffic control and investigation and that has a closure. you notice the orange stretch there, folks are getting toward lawrence and realizing they can't get to 280, trying to get to a different way of bollinger road, take you over to wolf, on-ramp for saratoga toward 280. f that's where you're going. northbound 101 for slowing in the south bay, right on schedule there as well as the rest of your commute for the major freeways. quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza, shows you we are starting to see the brakes tapping in the middle lanes approaching the toll plaza and a little slow up the incline, marcus. that's not a surprise. back to you. >> t

the rest of the south bay freeways move smoothly. sensors have changed for west 580 and hayward for south 880, typical pattern for the portions of the bay, slowing through concord where the arrow is subtle on the speed sensors but the travel times as you come down for vasco show another five minutes added on for your drive out of brentwood, slowing the last couple of miles and no surprise more slowing through concord, so you can pick your route carefully toward the bay bridge with this backup holding light there, kari, not bad at all. >> and it's a nice sunrise, we're waking up to a clear sky but when you step outside you're like, okay, it's another chilly morning, very much like yesterday, where we're starting out with mid-30s in napa right now and dropped down to 35 degrees in morgan hill, most of us are feeling temperatures in the 40s, but it is still a cool start after the very strong cold front moved through over the weekend, but actually today, during the afternoon, it's going to be warmer. here is a live look at our live view

south bay freeway santa clara county the freeways are all right. an expressway lawrence expressway where there's police activity, we're hearing about a crash where two people died, snk kris sanchez is on the scene. it's very early but you have more information. >> reporter: it's very early in the investigation, but this crash happened just about 10:00 last night and what we know at this point is that the sheriff's department deputies were trying to initiate a stop on a vehicle when that vehicle failed to yield and took off instead. this happened just on midi way off of lawrence expressway near highway 280 right near midi sky school. the sheriffs office confirms they were trying to stop a driver and the driver took off and instead hit another vehicle. the crash was so forceful, the vehicle went airborne. >> i guess probably going pretty fast to get off the pavement. it's like a movie. it's like flipping over the air and slamming into the wall. >> reporter: at this point, we cannot confirm who the victims are nor why the deputies were police are hand

we have smooth commutes, so let's look at the south bay drive times. northbound 101 from highway 85 you're looking at about 18 minutes and northbound 280 from highway 101 to highway 85 about seven minutes. northbound 85 from highway 101 only 19 minutes. so far we've been doing pretty good. still seeing slowly along highway 17 but that could be overnight construction. kari, how is it going? >> looks pretty good. i know you'll be taking binx out for a walk a little bit later. we're starting out with some cool temperatures. also if you're heading out for that morning run or a bike ride, let's head over to cupertino, temperatures in the mid-40s this morning. yes, jacket weather for the start but then a very nice noon temperature, 64 degrees there. we'll continue to warm up, reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. let's first head to the south bay, we'll see a high of 71 downtown in san jose, and morgan hill at 71 degrees, and heading over toward the east bay 75 in antioch, while oakland will reach into the mid-60s. along the coast, we're keeping those clo

a surprise in south bay. santa clara is allowing anyone between ages 16 and 50 to sign up for the covid vaccination appointment, and the first day for statewide eligibility is april 15th. and we have bob riddell joining us this morning. and so how do people sign up? >> this is again open to anyone between ages of 16 and 49, and so just under 50, and starting at midnight last night, santa clara county opened up the appointment schedule for those people as long as you don't schedule the appointment before the eligibility date april 15th, and go into the search engine and type in santa clara county covid vaccination information and come up to the department of health website and scroll down and you will see the blue tab that says book an appointment. unfortunately for me, i am trying to get on and book an appointment, and i have not been able to yet. i go back and click on the santa clara valley clinics and all vaccination sites are full. this is not a surprise, because one thing that county pointed out is that

good morning, south bay, as we get started with this thursday. looking nice and clear out there. one thing i noticed, kari, this morning coming in the moon, just big and bright. no clouds in sight. >> yes, we're still able to see the super moon and it's been nice to have a clear sky, cool temperatures, but we know it's going to warm up today. let's show you where we're starting this morning as we take a look at our low 60s in brentwood. a little bit more windy as the temperatures are up higher compared to the 46 we have in napa. you can see that we already have a wide range in temperatures depending on where you are. los gatos, 63. san jose, it's at 51 degrees. hayward is at 48. it is a cool start to the day. seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, taking a look at what's happening in the south bay. as we check out our temperatures reaching 85 degrees in morgan hill, los gatos will reach 83 degrees. you'll notice it will be warm and moving over to the east bay. antioch reaching 86. you compare that to oakland. that will be in the low 70s with some breezy wind

spend a lot more of the time out there for parts of the south bay. we'll see temperatures in the low 80s. some of our inland valleys in spots like livermore and napa reaching into the low 80s today, and mid-80s for ukiah but, of course, we're keeping an eye on our rainfall deficits. i just got the update of the drought monitor. because of this huge rainfall deficit we've seen the drought worsen. stick around for that at 6:08. we'll see our temperatures for the next several days not too bad. a little bit warmer than normal, reaching into the upper 70s. we will have a windy weekend which, of course, is going to dry out the vegetation even more. we do need to be really careful. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >>> kari, in the south bay we have the only slowing in san jose. it's sticking around. you see that circled on the map with the speeds right around 50 on average from 280 up to 880, that section of san jose. now this is unusual. the slowing off the castro valley y. that's why we have m

an earthquake hit the south bay a little before 5:00 this morning. the center of that 3.0 magnitude quake was just outside of livermore near del valle regional park. that's about 40 miles southeast of oakland. this is actually the second earthquake to rattle the area in less than a week. so far, though, no reports of any injuries or damage. i have posted about the quake on twitter so let me know if you felt the shaking. >> we are just five days out from what is meant to be a monumental milestone here in california. everyone 16 and over will be eligible to get a covid vaccine. but here's the thing. this comes as appointments are quickly filling up. vaccine supplies are declining, and there are increasing concerns about the possible side effects of one of the vaccines. the rare lightheadedness, dizziness and nausea are some of the side effects that people here in the bay area and people across the country are suffering from after taking the new johnson & johnson vaccine. today in the bay's roz player has more on what you need to know before getting you

let's first start in the south bay, as we reach up to 80 in san jose. morgan hill will be a little bit warmer, reaching 83 degrees. for the east bay, we'll see some mid 80s in some spots as we head toward antioch. vallejo reaching 79 degrees and 75 today in hayward. going toward the coastline we still have upper 50s in half moon bay and you head over to san mateo and it's going to be 75 degrees, much warmer there and san francisco also feels a slight warmup, too, with mid-60s and the mission district our north bay highs reach up to 81 degrees in napa, and we'll see a high of 83 in clearlake. so with the 80s today, we'll do it all over again tomorrow, but at least it will be comfortable for the giants game this evening, first pitch at 6:45 and we're at 61 degrees. it starts to cool off. the cooldown continues into the evening. if you're one of the lucky few, make sure you're wearing something nice and warm as always there at the ball park. but we are going to see still dry weather in our forecast, high pressure not budging as these storm systems pass to
