sam kiley, cnn senior international correspondent, is in new delhi. sam, you spent a day at a crematorium there and it -- unbelievable what we're seeing coming out of india. describe for us what it's like there and what you have seen. >> reporter: well, victor, we started the morning at the crematorium, and i think you probably got the images up in front of you now. the numbers that were anticipated that would be cremated that day were going to be about 150. i don't know for sure, but by the time we had finished there at about 10:00 or 11:00 p.m. local time, they had definitely burned, in my estimate or guesstimate, considerably more than that. it was a really extraordinary scenes of great quiet on the part of the people working there, trying to treat every single individual with the dignity that they deserved as they were put through the last rites but they did have to suffer the indignity, the dead had to queue, victor. they had to -- or their attendants would have to go and get a slip of paper like you do -- a ticket like going to a bank or seeing

let's get to sam kiley in moscow with the latest developments. there were questions, sam, about whether his life was in danger. what are you learning? >> well, brianna, that is what alexei navalny, the leading opposition figure in russia currently languishing in jail has said is exactly the reason he is abandoning his hunger strike. following the visit of independent doctors and then the analysis of their reports by his own physicians, a team of five, who exhorted him to end his hunger strike. i'm quoting from his post here on instagram. he said that one of the things that triggered this for him is a quote from the doctors' letter to him. in a minimum of time, there will be no one to treat. and he said it seems to me that was worthy of attention. really in large part, he has achieved what he set out to achieve which was to get independent medical attention inside the russian penal system. he got that on tuesday, we understand. he was seen by independent physicians and he was moved to a civilian hospital. where he is now, we don't know, but he is

let's get more from sam kylie in moscow right now. this sounds very serious. give us the latest. >> reporter: well, at the moment we've only got the statements from people inside the navalny camp, but among them are a number of independent medical experts, doctors, who say that they have had access to some of the medical reports on him emerging from the penal colony where he's in jail, suggesting that he could face imminent renal failure and possible heart problems. of course, you will recall, jim, he was attacked with the nerve agent back in the summer last year, and only just survived that attack, blamed on the russian authorities after intense treatment in germany. he chose to return to russia, face charges of embezzlement. that's what he's in jail for now. he's hunger striking in demand for more independent medical attention. this all coming whilst the opposition is trying to galvanize support for him from the general russian population with an online petition calls for 500,000 signatures. they're at about 450. when they get that, they say at an unspecifie

sam kiley has the details from moscow. >> reporter: a russian prosecutor has successfully appealed to a moscow court to have the whole movement behind alexei navalny effectively suspended. this is part of ongoing proceedings to have his movement designated as an extremist organization. now, the movement's headquarters in various offices across russia are being ordered to cease their activities and on social media his supporters have said that they are ending all of their posting in support of mr. navalny following this court ruling. this is part of an ongoing campaign effectively to stifle his movement that was very loud across the country last wednesday with demonstrations in many, many cities in support of mr. navalny's then hunger strike demanding access to independent medical authorities to look after him while he languished in prison. he has now suspended that hunger strike or ended that hunger strike but now his movement faces a temporary suspension, but part of a campaign being orchestrated through the moscow courts by the prosecutors here to render it a prescribed organization

sam kiley is in moscow for us. what are we hearing from navalny today? what condition is he in? >> he acknowledged, it was gratitude, the large turnout that we're seeing across russia in spite of the efforts by the putin administration to suppress public demonstrations many thousand people turned out, close to 2,000 detained, down on previous demonstrations in support of mr. navalny. then we have this very dramatic letter from his doctors, as you say there, saying he is in mortal danger, effectively, and asking him to come off his hunger strike. after analysis of the independent physician who did see him, their report suggests he could suffer renal failure, neurological damage even heart failure and is already suffering from some kind of fits. in that context they've asked him to give up his hunger strike. it's not clear, and i've been in touch with his chief of staff in the last couple of hours, whether or not mr. navalny will agree to come up his hunger strike and kind of a moot point his demands for independent decisions have been met as he has been seen and moved to a civili

sam, this real? >> reporter: well, i think it's real john in that it may reduce the heightened tensions that were caused by what the russians are calling a military exercise on the borders with ukraine and inside the illegally occupied crimean peninsula and the black sea. there are about 100,000 russian troops in the area, this is eu estimates of 40,000 extra troops on the ukraine border, a substantial number may be withdrawn by the russians by may 1st they say. but what's going to be interesting to the spies effectively intelligence organizations in the western world will be to see whether troops are left behind, particularly specialist units such as pair troopers inside the crimean peninsula and rocketers, people who fire surface to surface missiles, the specialists may be left behind but at this stage the official russian policy is that they are moving out after successful exercises and partly to avoid any kind of conflict or sense of conflict with an ongoing nato exercise, which includes operatio
