there's a lot to get to tonight and it's where we are going to start tonight is with the latest from nbc news, justice correspondent pete williams. who has been reporting today had that the burst of violence at the north entrance to the u.s. capitol grounds today. that left one u.s. capitol police officer killed. and another hospitalized with injuries and a suspect dead involved in all of that. ramming a car in to those officers and in to a metal bare -- a metal barricade and then lept on out of that with a knife. one capitol police officer was announced that the officer was killed. and this man, william evans known to his friends as billie, officer evans was an 18-year veteran of the capitol police force, we know he arrived on their elite first responders unit. that was the same unit that officer brian sicknick served who died on the january 6th capitol attack. we have the latest on the investigation and what is known about the suspect. pete, thanks for making time tonight for you. what are the basic facts that we know of right now in terms of how the story as evolved? >> the law enforc

with nbc's ron allen. ron, what's the latest there? >> reporter: well, you can see across the street there, there is a huge police presence there, clearing out that gas station. they have began grabbing and arresting people out of the crowd. we wor told we had to move across this major street so we think we are in a safe place right now. but if you look that way and come pan the other way, all here you can see the police advancing even further. with that big, huge, armored vehicle in the center. it goes down that way about 100 feet or so. there must be several hundred officers. and they're now well down the street from in front of the police headquarters. where the protesters have gone we don't know. people have just scattered. and we've also seen many people arrested. don't know if the number -- of that is yet, but bottom line is this night the police have just said this is over. get out of here. go home or you're going to be arrested. they've run out of patience and you can see a huge presence. lawrence, back to you. >> nbc's ron all

on behalf of all my colleagues at the networks of nbc news, goodnight. nbc news, goodnight. what a news day this has been. the biden administration announcing today today, that the u.s. war in afghanistan will finally come to an end. and multiple presidents have tried. even in the george w. bush administration, which started that war. they said that by the time george w. bush left office, they were trying to end it, they wanted to bring u.s. troops home from afghanistan even back then. they set targets, for withdrawal, based on what they hope to be improvements on conditions on the ground. surprisingly conditions on the ground never improved enough to warrant hitting those targets, so the troops did not come home then under the president who started that war. president obama wanted to bring that troops home from afghanistan as well but then he famously surged more troops into afghanistan, to try to improve things on the ground. because they hoped to be able to end the u.s. war there, based on improving conditions on the ground. but in the end, surprise, conditions on the gro

filling in so i could sneak away for a while on behalf of all of our colleagues here at the networks of nbc news. good night. and just like that, we are back on the air and we are doing so to update you on the rolling and breaking news situation in brooklyn center minnesota. a northern suburb of the twin cities where tonight for the second night, we saw violence in the streets. we saw protesters outside police headquarters and then a phalanx of police officers using stun grenades using multiple volleys of tear gas and using at one point lines of officers in body armor. you see them there, methodically moving forward to disperse the crowd. for the most part, at around 10:30, 11 eastern time, 9:30 or ten local time in minnesota folks started to break up and go home but we should emphasize all of this is because a young man named dante rights should by all accounts be alive today after an encounter with the police this weekends that resulted in the opposite. he is dead, a veteran officer, a 26 year veteran of the force is tonight receiving all of the scrutiny she deserves after an apparent mis

this case appears to dove tail to what is going on with trump arific republican congressman matt gaetz nbc is reporting part of the investigation of greenberg that lead to sex trafficking charges against him is the same investigation that led to the sex trafficking investigation of mr. gaetz. we don't know if greenberg is cooperating against mr. gaetz. politico flushed out details about trump attorney william barr who was reportedly briefed multiple times on the federal sex trafficking investigation into mr. gaetz part of the reason he was briefed on it a lot is because he was very concerned for himself. he didn't want to scaccidentally end up at an event where mr. gaetz might be reporting today at least one publicly announced meeting between then attorney bill barr got called off he pulled out after he said publicly that he would go do it. the reason is because congressman gaetz rsvp'd he would attend and so mr. barr decided not to attend. as for the scope of the investigation, abc news is reporting today that investigation includes allegations that he had a sexual relationship with, quot

nbc news reported today that that latter part of the tax collector guy investigation, the part where they looked at his devices and decided what was going won with the fake i.d.s through his office is he was using fake i.d.s to facilitate criminal sexual acts, including sex trafficking of underage persons. that part of the investigation into this tax collector guy ultimately led to what are now the newly reported details of this federal criminal investigation into republican congressman meat gaetz, who is also accused of sex trafficking of a minor mr. greenberg, the seminole county tax collector guy and gaetz are reportedly close there are several pictures of them together and now investigators are looking at whether congressman gaetz may end up charged with sex traffics of an underaged girl but while we were absorbing that detail of the story here, right, not just that these two guys are -- one of them facing charges, one of them facing similar allegations that led to a criminal investigation, but the connection of the sex trafficking charges against the tax collector guy to the sex

joining us now is nbc news presidential historian michael beschloss. it's been too long. thank you for being here tonight. >> wonderful to see you, rachel. >> i'm drawing an implicit parallel with lyndon johnson in terms of his pre-presidency reputation and then the ambition and the progressive nature of his ambition as president. i don't think it maps exactly to what we're seeing with joe biden, but is it -- does that strike you as an appropriate parallel. >> i think it's a great parallel, and you know, here's a case, lbj ran for the senate in 1948, gave white supremacist speeches in the late 1950s when there was a civil rights bill in congress basically the first major one to pass since the time of reconstruction. johnson was there to water it down because he wanted to please a lot of the conservatives in his caucus and in texas. so when john kennedy was murdered on the 22nd of november, 1963, there were a lot of black americans and a lot of righteous other americans who were very worried that johnson would be a deal maker and that unlike kennedy, he would come in and h

us on behalf of all of my colleagues at the metrics of nbc news, goodnight. , goodnight. it was 100 years ago this spring. teenage boy named dick roland, just a teenager, he was at grave risk of being lynched. tulsa oklahoma had defendants dragged out of the courthouse, dragged out of the jail before and lynched in the streets. in may 1921, when dick roland had been arrested in tulsa. there was fairly good reason to believe it was going to happen again. a local paper, the tulsa tribune published an account on may 31st 1921, that essentially accused this black teenager, dick roland, of rape. he worked as a shoe shine boy at a building in downtown tulsa. the paper in red hot terms essentially accused him of sexually assaulting a white teenage girl who worked at an elevator operator at the building where he worked. and teenage dick roland was arrested that day and after, he was arrested, a mob apparently a large mob of white tulsa residents started gathering at the courthouse demanding basically to get their hands on him. and tulsa was a bustling city at the time. a lot of b

nbc news has now confirmed this reporting by cbs tonight. we've also tried to reach the marijuana entrepreneur/hand surgeon, but he did not answer our calls. still, that was fun. congressman gaetz reiterated his denial that he's ever paid for sex. he specifically denied that he had sex with an underage girl. but the story, of course, first broke in "the new york times" last week that congressman gaetz is being investigated by the justice department over whether he had sex with an underage girl and whether he paid for her to travel with him across state lines. if true, that could constitute a violation of federal child sex trafficking laws. the investigation of congressman gaetz reportedly started as an offshoot of a different federal child sex trafficking investigation that led to federal charges against a friend of congressman gaetz. a local republican elected official in florida named joel greenberg. mr. greenberg was arrested last year on an array of charges, including sex trafficking of a minor. he's currently in jail awaiting trial. he'

cnn is reporting tonight and this is not confirmed by nbc news, but the investigation i'm going to matt gaetz is examining, among other things, whether gaetz may have used not just money, but drugs in his dealing with young women. cnn says investigators are examining where gaetz engaged in a relationship with a woman that began when she was 17, and whether his involved with other young women broke federal sex trafficking and prostitution laws. again, this is per cnn. we have not confirmed this. cnn saying that investigators are looking at whether he used drugs in addition to cash in his dealings with young women, that is new. as we reported last night, the house republican leader, kevin mccarthy, has now confirmed after initially saying otherwise, he's now confirmed that if and when congressman matt gaetz is indicted, republicans in the house will remove him from all his committee assignments and otherwise relieve him of his congressional responsibilities. presumably they'll move to expel him from congress if he's convicted, unless he quits first. but we shall see. that's still happenin

nbc news reports that the white house actually discussed the possibility of activating national guard troops in all 50 states in anticipation of potential mass protests in response to whatever the jury's verdict will be. that hasn't happened. we haven't seen 50 state national guard activation. but the d.c. national guard was activated, and other places may do the same. today, the governor of minnesota asked ohio and nebraska to please send state troopers in to minnesota to help out with needs there. we had a week of angry protests in minnesota. brooklyn center, minnesota, about ten miles from where the george floyd trial has been under way, after police released body cam footage of daunte wright being shot and killed by an officer who shouted that she was going to tase him, but then fired her pistol into his chest. and the footage is seared into you, from both cases. and today, in the closing arguments, the prosecutor in the george floyd trial made a deep argument about the people who took the footage of george floyd being killed by that police officer. the bystanders who saw this man

we will continue to follow this developing story here throughout the morning on msnbc and on nbc news.com. we continue now with the rachael maddow show. >>> police in chicago this afternoon released the body camera footage that shows a police officer shooting and killing a 13-year-old boy named adam toledo. the shooting happened a couple of weeks ago. the footage was just released to the public today. the delay in the release of the footage was actually at the request of the toledo family. at 2:30 in the morning, chicago police arrived at the scene of reported gunfire, they saw two males standing in an alley. one of those males was a 21-year-old, he's been charged with illegally carrying and firing a gun the police saw that night. the other male was a kid, 13 years old, adam toledo. police arrived at the alley, he ran. the body camera footage released today shows that a police officer chased after him and shouted at adam toledo to show his hands. he also tells him to, quote, drop it. at that point toledo appears to turn around and it all happens very quickly, but he begins to raise his ha

i want to bring in the conversation nbc news national reporter dion hampton who is also in brooklyn center tonight. what can you tell us about your vantage point and what you're able to see? >> thanks for having me on. from what i see, i see a jekyll and hyde crowd. this way, my colleague mentioned there are about 500 people left that are demonstrators and here, you have a peaceful crowd. people who are praying. people who are telling the other protestors not to become violent. so over here, you have people, hands up. don't shoot. we have one bullhorn. and you have people saying, we don't want any violence. now, if you pan the camera this way, maybe 75 yards down the street, it's the completely different crowd. this crowd is provoking the police, this crowd is agitating the police. and, again, they're very juxtaposed to what is going on here. so the police have been saying that they want the crowd to stop being unruly. and the protesters down there who were throwing the water bottles and the other debris and the officers is saying it's unlawful. the captain has come out, and they're giving
