" >>> it's a specific kind of terror, that only seems to, constantly, haunt the united states. mass shootings. the most recent took place, thursday night, at a fedex-ground facility in indianapolis, indiana. eight people lost their lives. that horrific news is compounded by the number of similar incidents, in recent weeks. in fact, it's the 45th-mass shooting in the u.s., since the atlanta-area spa killings, on march 16th. and some cities have had more than one. now, cnn defines a mass shooting as one, in which at least four people are hurt or killed by gunfire, not including the gunman. officials say they won't reveal the identities of the people who are wounded in that shooting friday but they have released the names of those who lost their lives. they are 32-year-old matthew r. alexander. 19-year-old samaria blackwell. 66-year-old amarjeet johal. 68-year-old jaswinder singh. 48-year-old amarjit sekhon. 19-

a month ago, we were watching the horrible images come in from two-mass shootings in and around atlanta. seems a long time ago, doesn't it? the sad fact is, though, that mass shootings have become so common, it may, soon, be hard for one not to fall on the anniversary of another. this is a map of mass shootings in just the last month, which we're defining as four or more people shot, wounded, or killed, excluding the gunman. one other thing to note. there is only room on the map to show a little less than half. the full count, again, over just a single month since the atlanta shootings is 45 and the map is profound as it might be, doesn't do justice to the story. doesn't capture the horror. it doesn't capture the wounds, and the deaths of so many americans. the map doesn't tell the story of the five people, who were shot and wounded on march 17th in stockton, california. or the four shot in oregon, a day later. in houston, on the 20th, five shot at a nightclub. that same day in dallas, eight people shot and one killed in philadelphia. that night someone opened fire at a party, kill one

way back when she was the deputy city attorney in my hometown of atlanta, georgia, and she saw a group of -- she referred to them as secretaries with like all this brilliant, you know, legal knowledge, and they just weren't getting paid. she essentially said to the city we need to do something about this, and she huddled with these women to get them more training once she had access to power. then of course they got higher salaries. cut to she's the house minority leader in georgia, and what do you have to do? you learn how to fund-raise. she has this sort of jedi fund-raising skill. more recently as we were all covering the election and you see how women and specifically black women really showed up to help flip georgia and then of course the senate runoffs in january, stacey literally shared the wealth from all of her fund-raising with a lot of other women, a lot of other women groups, women of color. the narrative in our culture likes to pit women against one another, but we need to be like the stacey abrams of the world and we need to huddle. >> you're one of the bravest people i k

live from cnn world headquarters in atlanta, welcome to all of you watching here in the united states, canada and around the world, i'm kim brunhuber. this is "cnn newsroom." ♪ ♪ >> we begin with breaking news out of taiwan where dozens of dead after a train derailed. you can see rescue teams here in this video helping survivors from the damaged cars, taiwan's government says at least 41 people were killed. we're hearing from the central news agency that the accident may have happened after a vehicle hit the moving train. let's go straight to ivan watson who is following the developments from hong kong. ivan, a tragic start to a holiday weekend in taiwan. what's the latest there? >> reporter: well, a desperate rescue effort, frankly, after this terrible and deadly train disaster where you have the premiere of taiwan now updating that up to 41 people are believed to have been killed in this accident, including the driver of the train. it was the number 408 train that was traveling down the east side of taiwan from taipei and it was entering a tunnel north of the city of huallen whe

they tended not have the high profileness, the public nature of the ones we're seeing in atlanta, in boulder and now in indiana. those are newsworthy events for a variety of reasons but because the -- because they are public places. so let's -- so gun violence continued through the pandemic. and -- but we are coming out, there's a lot of mental health issues. we've always had guns and weaponry that is accessible. i've been on with you many times. i get tired of the motivation question only because, you know, sometimes we don't know why someone does something. the numbers i'm looking at as a homeland security person, i think about risk reduction. we're not going to eliminate gun violence in this country tomorrow but what we can bebegin to look at is why are there weapons accessible to so many people that kill so many people quickly? that's the issue. i mean, this is uniquely american in this sense that you can walk into a facility, have 90 seconds and eight, nine, ten, we don't know how many are dead. that, to me, is why gun violence is our sort of primary homeland security issue righ

i don't care if that's detroit, atlanta, chicago, jacksonville, anywhere in between. not only if you're not black, but a black person that's sympathetic and empathetic to the community. i introduced the world to tommy no norman. you dealt with his community. you got a chance to see him marry a black woman, see him be a person who was sympathetic and empathetic to the people he's policing. no way an officer of the state who is brown should be harassing and spraying in the eyes pepper spray of another brown person. so, that brown person shouldn't be a police officer. i need him replaced with a brown person that understands and will walk and talk that other brown person through in the same way i've seen a 61-year-old white man hit a policeman with a hammer, drive off with a cop in the car and get taken in without being shot. the state is empowering people who look like me and don't look like me to be less empathetic, more sympathetic and more brutal. this must end. if you cannot empathize with the community you're in, you should not be policing that community. >> just go

it was three weeks since the atlanta spa shooting. there have been at least 20, 20 mass shootings in the u.s. in two weeks. cnn's senior national correspondent is in southern california this morning. i know you're waiting for an update from police in a couple of hours. what are we hoping to learn and what do we know so far? >> you know, right now we just don't have a lot of detauils about what led up to this jim. we're hoping to learn more about the suspect, motive, any connection, any possible connection to the people who died here. all we know right now is basically what we've seen. the investigators, you can see them out front. this is the business park where the shooting took place last night. investigators have been going in and out doing evidence collection. they remain here as they try to figure out what led up to all of this. what neighbors here, apartments and houses all through this area surrounding this business park say that they started hearing gunfire right around dinner time last night. shortly after that, then the soun

atlanta's mayor feels that losing the all-star game may just be the binning of the backlash. the latest, here is natasha change. >> they say he caved to cancel culture and that president joe biden and stacey abrams have been lying to the american people about this law. skied about whether or not they had anything to do with the urgency or time line of this law? >> is the time on this is based on your belief that was there fraud. >> i realize that people have different opinions and beliefs about the 2020 election, but make no mistake there was issues that happened on the election like they do in every election. >> they also say that mlb should have come to him with specific complaints about the bill and that he would welcome questions about the specifics. so we asked about things like banning mobile voting centers, specifying the number of drop boxes and locations. he chalked up a lot of that to improved election security. now you have proathletes and politicians chiming in seeing they support the decision here and whether or not you support o oppose it it is local businesses
