a month ago, we were watching the horrible images come in from two-mass shootings in and around atlanta. seems a long time ago, doesn't it? the sad fact is, though, that mass shootings have become so common, it may, soon, be hard for one not to fall on the anniversary of another. this is a map of mass shootings in just the last month, which we're defining as four or more people shot, wounded, or killed, excluding the gunman. one other thing to note. there is only room on the map to show a little less than half. the full count, again, over just a single month since the atlanta shootings is 45 and the map is profound as it might be, doesn't do justice to the story. doesn't capture the horror. it doesn't capture the wounds, and the deaths of so many americans. the map doesn't tell the story of the five people, who were shot and wounded on march 17th in stockton, california. or the four shot in oregon, a day later. in houston, on the 20th, five shot at a nightclub. that same day in dallas, eight people shot and one killed in philadelphia. that night someone opened fire at a party, kill one

they tended not have the high profileness, the public nature of the ones we're seeing in atlanta, in boulder and now in indiana. those are newsworthy events for a variety of reasons but because the -- because they are public places. so let's -- so gun violence continued through the pandemic. and -- but we are coming out, there's a lot of mental health issues. we've always had guns and weaponry that is accessible. i've been on with you many times. i get tired of the motivation question only because, you know, sometimes we don't know why someone does something. the numbers i'm looking at as a homeland security person, i think about risk reduction. we're not going to eliminate gun violence in this country tomorrow but what we can bebegin to look at is why are there weapons accessible to so many people that kill so many people quickly? that's the issue. i mean, this is uniquely american in this sense that you can walk into a facility, have 90 seconds and eight, nine, ten, we don't know how many are dead. that, to me, is why gun violence is our sort of primary homeland security issue righ

i don't care if that's detroit, atlanta, chicago, jacksonville, anywhere in between. not only if you're not black, but a black person that's sympathetic and empathetic to the community. i introduced the world to tommy no norman. you dealt with his community. you got a chance to see him marry a black woman, see him be a person who was sympathetic and empathetic to the people he's policing. no way an officer of the state who is brown should be harassing and spraying in the eyes pepper spray of another brown person. so, that brown person shouldn't be a police officer. i need him replaced with a brown person that understands and will walk and talk that other brown person through in the same way i've seen a 61-year-old white man hit a policeman with a hammer, drive off with a cop in the car and get taken in without being shot. the state is empowering people who look like me and don't look like me to be less empathetic, more sympathetic and more brutal. this must end. if you cannot empathize with the community you're in, you should not be policing that community. >> just go
