steve osunsami is at cdc headquarters in atlanta. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. the panel meeting today could make a number of different recommendations. one of them is to keep things the way they are, to maintain the hold on using the johnson & johnson vaccine or they could join health officials in europe who have cleared the vaccine for use but are putting a safety warning on the medicine. a panel of experts put together by the cdc is expected to decide whether people should keep using the single dose johnson & johnson covid vaccine. it's a key tool in ending the pandemic, but u.s. health officials put use of the vaccine on hold last week when six women got sick with rare blood clots after getting the shot and this morning, the cdc says it's investigating a handful of new cases. earlier this morning george spoke to the director of the national institutes of health about what he expects from the announcement today. >> i know you don't want to get into the cdc advisory panel but just give us your thou

i know you gave an interview with the los angeles times about the atlanta area shootings, at the number of spas by that young man. and in that case, that case, was purchased legally, can you elaborate a little bit more on what happened in that case? >> so that was a situation where the gun was purchased within, you know, in california we have a 10 day waiting period to buy a fighter arm, firearm. research shows that whether it's people who intend to do harm to themselves, or others, very often holding off period or space between purchasing the gun and acquiring the gun can make a huge difference in preventing that from happening or maybe people get help or have second thoughts about the act they are going to make. in this case, the gun was purchased so soon before the event of that really, there was no opportunity or that individual to get the help they needed. you know, the other thing we are finding, and the thoughts are always different in these cases, a lot of times, now we are seeing connections between extremism and hate crimes, and hate speech and some of the shootings. so there'

so, here's our senior national correspondent steve osunsami from the cdc in atlanta. >> reporter: any future use of the johnson & johnson covid vaccine could be decided tomorrow by a cdc advisory panel. because it's a single shot, it's become an important tool in fighting the coronavirus. >> we need to make a decision quickly i'm and really hopeful that we'll be able to use the vaccine soon. >> reporter: u.s. health officials put use of the vaccine on hold after six women developed rare blood clots after getting the shot. tomorrow, they could continue with that hold or join health officials in europe, who just days ago decided that the benefits outweigh the risks and have cleared the vaccine to be used with a safety warning. across the country, it appears fewer people are rushing to get immunized, with thousands of appointments sitting empty and some vaccination places shutting down. >> when 16 and older opened, i did expect a rush and it just never materialized. >> reporter: for the first time in weeks, the daily average of shots put into arms has fallen below 3 million doses a day.

steve osunsami is at the cdc in atlanta with that. welcome back, steve. >> reporter: good morning, to you, michael. in december then president-elect joe biden promised 100 million vaccines into the arms of 100 million americans within his first 100 days and this morning he has more than done that with 200 million shots in arms and still more than a week before his 100th day. the number of people, however, who are coming in to get the vaccine is slightly down this week across america. the government keeps daily averages and tells us that the average this week for vaccinations is about 3 million shots a day, but the week before that average was 3.35 million shots a day. the cdc says that this seven-day average started dropping a week ago and they underline that this drop in vaccinations started a day before the government announced the pause that was being put on the johnson & johnson vaccine because of rare blood clots that raised safety concerns. they say there are a number of possible reasons for this drop, but high among them, they

the asian small-clawed otters at the georgia aquarium in atlanta have tested positive. the aquarium says the animals have shown many of the symptoms that come with the virus and probably got infected by an employee who was asymptomatic. >>> developing news now coming out of texas, authorities are searching for a former sheriff's deputy wanted in the deadly shooting of three people in austin. 41-year-old stephen broderick is accused of killing two women and a man today. police say he knew his victims. broderick is a former travis county sheriff's detective placed on leave last year and later resigned after being charged with the sexual assault of a child. >>> thousands of people joined a peace march for 13-year-old adam toledo who was shot and killed by chicago police. the march was in the city's little village neighborhood where that shooting happened. you can see there are protesters that called for changes in policing and to an end to gun violence. a few days ago police released body cam footage that shows an officer shooting toledo less than a second after he dropped
