system and we've been listening to mr christopher martin he worked in the shop cut foods in this seems like a lot of the focus now kind of turning towards what happened in the shop leading up to the moments where the police were called in. to to deal with mr george floyd let's bring in john hendren he's been following the trial for us in minneapolis he joins me now live from there and as i said john it seems like the focus now is to try and look at the moments before the death of george floyd under the knee of derek show of and then to look at what happened in the shop is that where we're going today. that does seem to be what's happening now you heard chris of or martin this employee of the food food store who actually lived above it chalking about the incentive for actually pursuing george floyd on that day and that's the store manager had set a rule that said if you took a counterfeit bill you had to pay for it out of your pocket as an employee of that store and so you can hear chris martin say he considered just paying his own $20.00 and then he reconsidered that talked to his mana

george floyd had gone in and handed him at will christopher martin 4 was a counterfeit 20 pound note and we heard how the teenager fell to disbelief in guilty as the then watched george floyd's. arrest and we also heard from a witness charles mcmillan witness for the prosecution who was walking by took film the sum of what was happening and also questioned the policeman derek show then when he had his knee on george floyd's neck now we're seeing there c.c.t.v. footage of the area around that cup foods the place where george of floyd was apprehended. the 3rd day of testimony and this of course very high profile trial there in facing 3 charges 2nd degree murder 3rd degree murder and man slaughter as well some very upsetting video that we saw earlier on today as well whereas the previous days we had seen the full 9 minute 29 2nd footage filmed by lookers today we saw quite a lot of police body camera footage as well showing different stages and of course different angles of derrick chauvelin apprehending and holding down george floyd a very upsetting bits as well george floyd repeatedly

i should also note that christopher martin is 19-year-old. he's the fifth teenager or younger to testify out of ten witnesses in total as part of this trial just three days in. after martin exited the stand, a man by the name of christopher belfry took the stand. he actually pulled behind the vehicle that police officers first interacted in, and he was startled when an officer pulled out his gun, so he pulled out his phone and started filming. >> i noticed. two officers coming. they approached the vehicle in front of me. one officer drew a handgun, and opened the door, pointed the gun at whoever was in the driver's seat. it startled me, you know, when i seen the officer raise his gun. >> let me just -- >> i started recording. >> reporter: he eventually said that he stopped recording altogether, because the officers kept staring at him, and he didn't want any problems. but he did witness what those other bystanders witnessed, floyd being dragged over to that side of the street and being pinned under the knee of derek chauvin. the defense chose

we went straight to the testimony of christopher martin. the defense, not re-cross examining her. i want to go to our legal panel. paul butler is here, an msnbc legal analyst. he is the author of "chokehold pl policing black men." paul, let me start with the obvious question why do you think that the firefighter, the emt who was so powerful yesterday was not brought back today >> you know, at the end of the cross examination, the defense was kind of floundering. they established that she's not an expert on police use of force practices. she was combative. she was giving them a hard time. we can be sure that the prosecutors had a discussion with her last night telling her to chill out again, with witnesses for the prosecution of a murder trial, their sense is that the defense attorney is trying to help a murderer go free so often, they are combative but that doesn't look good in front of the jury, especially if the witness is reprimanded i think probably the prosecution and the defense were happy not to have her back although, at the end of the day, she was a very effective witness

this witness here, christopher martin, testifying that he had a conversation with george floyd and in that moment, he said he thought that george floyd was high it took him a little bit of time to answer his question, but i think what really stands out here is this idea that george floyd's friend earlier in the day tried to purchase an item inside this store with fake bills, with counterfeit bills. and christopher martin testified that he didn't sell it to him because it looked like he was scheming fast forward a little bit into the day when george floyd goes to make that purchase of that pack of cigarettes and christopher martin's testimony was that he didn't believe that george floyd knew that the money he was spending, that $20 bill, was fake he went ahead and sold it to him. it was only after george floyd left to go back into his vehicle that he thought maybe i should tell my manager about this, or else that was going to have to come out of his paycheck his manager then told him and another employee to go out and try to get george floyd to come back into the store. there were two

christopher martin, who was on -- who has been on the stand testifying that he believed floyd was on some drugs, but that he was able to still carry on a conversation with him. one of the more interesting parts came from the decision the cashier was wrestling with. when he got the bill, he was holding it up into the light. he mentioned the store policy, that the you take a counterfeit $20 bill, you have to pay for it out of your own paycheck. he said initially he was going to do that. but he pointed out in the video, he second-guessed himself. went and spoke with the managerment they both said, well, we have to go speak to him. floyd who is now in a vehicle parked across the street. the cashier said he went out there twice. that's sort of where we left things. we can imagine that timeline will continue to move forward when we get back from that short five-minute break. all of this adds context to the record of what happened that day on may 25th, 2020. yesterday was dominated by eyewitness testimony to floyd being under the knee of derek chauvin, people steps away. we got the latter p

martin who was working in the food store cup food and sold george floyd a packet of cigarettes he was paid with what he thought was a counterfeit note and it was that incident which kicked off the chain of events leading to officers apprehending floyd. you saw you standing there with your hands on your head for a while right. was going through your mind to. leave. and go. why do you. not build. another individual officer or. what did you do after that happened. and so we're seeing court proceedings as i was saying now i think they seem to have gone back to another body can a foot is just to remind you the witness is actually on the stand this change drew go who is what was described as a foundational witness basically he is in the technology department of the police department in charge or with the knowledge of the systems the police officers that use especially the body cams that they use while at work and that they are instructed to turn on whenever there is any kind of interaction with the public we are now seeing images of yet another body cam we have already seen the events that

asks george floyd to forgive her for being unable to save him and then we saw just hours ago christopher martin the clerk at the come food store the one who received the allegedly false $20.00 bill from george floyd that started all of this he says he wished he had just paid $20.00 of his own that this incident had never happened he felt a sense of regret so powerful that his mother who lived upstairs he called her when he saw the police incident out front and he said please don't come downstairs i was the 1st thing he did then he took out his camera and he did what so many other people have done in this instance and that is to fuel the officers kneeling on the back and of course jerry show vanilla on the neck of george floyd to record that moment after repeatedly many of them trying to get the police to stop what they were doing the paramedics said she came in tried to help offered to give medical assistance to a man that she felt was desperately in need of it 'd felt that he was unconscious and that she could do something for him in the police told her to go away so there's a sense of

you have the witness today, christopher martin, who made the big deal about the counterfeit $20 bill and wishes he wouldn't have made such a big deal and feels guilt over that. if people are watching and they feel something, what are people supposed to do? >> well, you know, i mentioned this yesterday, i believe. it would be great if the witnesses could have access to some kind of mental health -- >> counseling. >> counseling or something because obviously you can see, and it doesn't matter if you're young or old. we saw minors yesterday who clearly were suffering from trauma. now you see an individual who looks like a senior citizen or so who's going through the same thing. so, young or old, when you see this for real and you have to relive it. i don't know if people really realize how powerful a tool video really is. it's incredibly powerful. you're watching it. you know what's going to happen and yet there's nothing you can do about it. i've had veteran homicide detectives tell me, 15, 20 years in homicide and now that they're watching actual video of a person, how it affects them

another critical eyewitness, former cup foods clerk, christopher martin, testified he immediately knew that the $20 bill floyd gave him was fake and was going to have it taken from his own paycheck if he accepted it, so he went outside twice to talk with floyd who did not comply. martin added that while in the store, floyd was in good spirits but seemed under the influence with delayed speech. >> it kind of took him a little long to get to what he was trying to say. it appeared he was high. >> martin said he still haunted about what happened. >> if i would have just not taken the bill, it could've been avoided. >> margin also revealed floyd and his friend were in cup foods earlier on the day that floyd died and that hall allegedly tried to pass a fake bill the first time. martin testified he wasn't sure if floyd knew he was using a fake bill. some of the jurors say that they had never seen any of that graphic, disturbing george floyd arrest video. in court a short while ago for the first time this entire jury had to sit through all four of the police body worn camera videos. >> bret: m
