those reporters, of course, pressing biden was kaitlan. you had an excellent question on the filibuster. how can he agree the filibuster is a relic of the jim crow era and then show such reluctance to make any real reforms? >> that's going to be a big factor as you are seeing more and more progressives to get rid of the filibuster, to get his key agenda items that aren't related to the budget passed. they feel good about infrastructure, of course. they got the american rescue plan passed through congress using reconciliation. the other things you're going to see president biden want to get done, this is going to be a really critical question here for immigration, things like the gun legislation that he was calling on the senate to pass earlier this week. whether or not they get rid of this is a big question. and also the idea of if you believe that the characterization from obama that this say relic from jim crow does fit, how can it stay? he wanted to deal with the abuse of the filibuster first. it has been overused and on fewer occasions

but talk to me about what today means for joe biden. >> kate, that is something that president biden certainly thinks about every single day, and let him count the ways. it is such a narrow majority. every piece of the agenda has to be seen through the light of can we get at least 50 democratic votes, not just joe manchin but also kyrsten sinema. but as for the press conference today there are several audiences here that president biden has in mind as he embarks on his first press conference of his first term in office and the senate is certainly one of them. up until now the white house has been relatively successful in threading the needle and keeping, you know, the big tent of the democratic party together, progressives on the left, and moderates as well. that is a challenge that will intensify as the weeks go ahead. as he moves into other agenda items. but there are so many issues on his plate, really they're multiplying as they do for all presidents and the test of a president, a modern day president is how they react to events that happened in realtime. immigration's certainly

how does biden make those measures a reality? >> president biden was kind enough to call me. we had a good conversation. he expressed his condolences. he's seen a lot of loss in his life, including of course his son and his wife and so many others. he's no stranger to loss. he gave some comforting words to colorado, to me. i think there will be a broad discussion about the policy side. you know, we have, for instance, universal background checks in colorado, but some of our neighboring states don't. i know congress is looking at closing that loophole. for now, we're really trying to do our best to comfort the families, the friends of the ten people who are no longer with us. >> just days before the shooting a state district court judge ruled that boulder can't enforce its ban on assault-style weapons. what does that mean for gun control in your state? >> well, you know, i don't know what that precedent formally means. that was a localized effort. we have some good statewide measures. we have a red flag law where if the family of somebody is worried about the mental state of a

clear victory for president biden today. will he be able to pass his agenda going forward without republican support? >> wolf, things will get a lot harder right now for joe biden in the aftermath of passage of this bill. the bills moving forward right now will require bipartisan support to get out of the united states senate and they don't have bipartisan support at the moment. bills that are moving to the house to expand voting rights to deal with pushback against some of the voting restrictions that are happening at the state level. they do not have 60 votes in the united states senate, nor votes to expand labor union organizing rights, something that passed the house last night, or expand background checks on gun sales, something that is expected to pass the house tomorrow. needing 60 votes at the moment to pass any legislation, changes made to the rules and are not expected to be enough support among democrats to change the rules. as a result, democrats will have to cut deals with republicans going forward. on those iss
