i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. thank you so much, rob. >> now to the south bay where san jose police shot and killed a suspected carjacker. this happened last night in the area of heading street and park avenue. police say the man was driving a stolen car and attempted a carjacking in santa clara. the suspect who was armed with a gun was not able to take the car. officers say he drove the original stolen car back to san jose where he caused a major accident at that intersection and injured other drivers. when police arrived, they say the suspect began shooting at officers. the suspect was hit at least one time by police and then was taken to the hospital where he later died. the police officers involved were not injured. police did arrest 2 teenagers from voy who they are accusing of being connected to a carjacking in san francisco. this happened after an american canyon police officer spotted teenage boys in a car wearing black ski masks running the license plate. it showed that they were wanted for carjacking. th

i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> well, a record number of children statewide are being hospitalized. now with covid, though, not necessarily because of the virus. federal data shows that children younger than 5 who aren't yet eligible for vaccination have been hospitalized. now with covid at higher rates than at any point during the pandemic. but many are often admitted for non-covid reason. and then only after they're in the hospital as a discovered that there are actually positive for the virus. doctors are concerned, they say about the long-term effects of a covid-related inflammatory condition and they're urging parents to vaccinate their children. if they're old enough to be eligible. california lawmakers, meanwhile, are set to consider a bill that would require all school children in the state to be vaccinated regardless of their personal beliefs. state senator richard pan is offering a bill that supporters say closes a loophole in the state's covid-19 vaccine requirement for students to learn

i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> thank you, rob. happening now, the federal website where people can request free at home covid tests is up and running and one day early the website is covid tests dot gov. supplies will be limited to 4 tests per home. the tests are free and there's no shipping costs, but do not expect to get the test right away. it is not clear whether all the tests are actually ready to go yet. and the white house says the tests will typically ship within 7 to 12 days. some people argue these federal tests should have been available a lot sooner. today the white house defended the timing of its decision. >> the market did not have the capacity at that moment to do what we're doing tomorrow. it turns out that there was actually a lot that was being done to increase testing over the course of the year. >> the press secretary jen psaki, they're also says they are expecting a bug or 2, especially if you have people apparently who live in apartment buildings that also have commercial in those buildings. and that's creat

nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> thank you, rob. in the south bay, san jose police shot and killed a suspected carjacker. this happened last night in the area of heading street and park avenue. authorities say the man was driving a stolen car and tried carjacking someone in santa clara, the suspect who was allegedly armed with a gun was not able to take the car. he was trying to carjack. officers say he drove the original stolen car back to san jose where he then caused a major accident at the intersection and injured other drivers. when police they arrived. they say that suspect started shooting at officers. the suspect was hit at least once by police gunfire and then was taken to a hospital where he died. the police officers involved were not injured. the second day in a row, search efforts continued in fremont for a 27 year-old stanford nurse. >> who friends say has been missing since early tuesday morning. traveling nurse michael o'dell was reported missing by his roommate after he didn't come home from his night shift at stanfo

i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. thank you, rob. >> santa clara county workers in high-risk settings have to get their covid booster shot by today. you may remember in late december county health officer doctor sara cody revise the county's health order to include a booster shot mandate. it applies to county employees and health care medical first response, skilled nursing facilities, jails and congregate shelters. the order says that any county workers in such high risk settings who are not up to date on vaccinations must be reassigned to lower risk settings or otherwise be prohibited from working in the higher risk workplace. california lawmakers are still trying to consider a bill that would require all school children in the state to be vaccinated for in-person learning regardless of their personal beliefs. our capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala explains the effort and the push back on this proposal. >> vaccination is the cornerstone of ensuring our schools will be open. state senator richard pan rolling out h
