i'm pam moore and i'm catherine heenan for ken wayne. >> bay area counties. they've been seeing a drop in covid cases, although hospitalizations are still increasing. kron four's amanda hari talked with health leaders throughout the bay area today about the current trends and what needs to be improved. >> well, everyone i spoke to is still encouraging people to stay diligent with their covid precautions. most county say they are starting to see a decrease in the number of cases reported. but there's still seeing an increase in hospitalization. our case counts are really more confident that that's reliable trend. doctor matt willis is the public health officer for marine county. he says the peak for the 7 day average of covid-19 case positivity was january 9th. >> and they're continuing to see improvement since then. every day we've had fewer cases in santa clara county. they use wastewater surveillance as a way to supplement their public health data. it measures the amount of virus in the wastewater accounting for those who are asymptomatic. don't test for us

i'm catherine heenan. san francisco officials say they are ready to fight the skyrocketing cases. they're asking the public to help to protect essential services and vulnerable populations. the city is expanding covid testing capacity throughout the city as well as vaccine and booster availability covid test kits have been ordered for first responders. also for residents and staffers at nursing homes. those tests are expected to arrive by mid january and mayor breed asking people to be careful about events and gatherings, of course, to avoid exposure to the virus. she says essential service workers are doing their best. >> i want to be very clear with the people of this city we are prioritizing essential city services, public safety and other life safety operations transit will be running, although we're asking for your patients. frontline workers will be putting in overtime to make up for their quarantine colleagues. trask is still being picked up. police are still on patrol and firefighters stand ready to respond. >> she is also thanking for people, for trying to protect each ot

i'm catherine heenan and i'm ken wayne, the demand for covid testing is as high as it's ever been as families return from their holiday vacations. >> and children return to the classroom. san francisco testing appointments are quickly filling up and city leaders say even if they wanted to open more testing sites that wouldn't solve the problem. they argue the main issue is a lack of supply. our coverage begins tonight with kron four's taylor's hacking. >> available covid testing appointments are few and far between in san francisco as families scramble to get tested after the holidays. well, it's not required. all students are also encouraged to get tested before returning to school. however, judging by comments online and e-mails. we've received some still were unable to find available testing options in time when trying to schedule an appointment online through the city's website. you'll even be greeted by this message saying the city is experiencing high demand city supervisor asha says the issue isn't the number of testing sites open. but instead a shortage in the supply chain. w
