the search for answers after this wild ride now to berkeley, where police say they arrested a 15 year old boy who was found with a bb gun at berkeley high school officers responded around noon yesterday to a fight involving several students. witnesses say two students had threatened others with what appeared to be a handgun. the two ran from the officers but were detained a short time later, police say they found a bb gun in one of the students, backpacks that closely resembled a real handgun. a 15 year old boy who does not attend berkeley high was arrested these eh francisco city attorney turning up the heat in the weeks long investigation into a covert testing site. the city attorney's office has filed a series of subpoenas looking into the companies involved. ktvu christien kafton has been following the story as it unfolded and he joins us now with details. christian andre remember. it was just last week that the city attorney's office said that it had sent letters to these covid testing companies requesting information about whether their licenses were currently the city attorney'

we've got cal berkeley law professor john you and immunologist, -- thank you to you both. doctor, let's go to you first. i want to talk about schools and testing. a lot of public health officials now including dr. mcgarry are saying this universal testing for schoolkids is becoming wasteful, that essentially we are using a whole lot of tests, tens of millions of tests, on a low risk population that really could be better serving high-risk populations like the elderly or the immunocompromised. what do you think? >> well, in general i agree. i think that these tests unfortunately are very volatile and what i mean by that is you know, you can take a test one minute and the next minute you can sort of acquire an infection from wherever you are. i think in general it's a good idea to actually limit this high-risk population and people who are actually some dramatic so that we can actually quarantine people appropriately. i do think that there's a large waste going on frankly, and the disparity between the screening test for the actual virus versus screening for immunity is quit

berkeley's innovative genomics institute. we met the covid testing lab director dr petro's giannakopoulos. we can process over 4000 samples a day, he says. they've seen a big increase in demand for pcr covid tests. he took us inside the i g lab, which analyzes those pcr tests that are considered the gold standard, but take more time to process than at home antigen tests. so what arrives is like literally hundreds and hundreds of samples all at once. and these machines that do all the work. they're called liquid handlers. they basically process these hundreds of samples that are on these plates, pcr or polymerase chain reaction test can detect even small amounts of the coronavirus by amplifying the samples, as many as 35 times is that one copy becomes two copies, and the two copies become four copies and four becomes eight. we have a fully automated laboratory that has robots that do all of the work. most pcr test can be analyzed within a day are average turnaround times about 24 hours. you know, most pcr test when you go to y
