cnn's jeff zeleny joins us from the white house. what is the mood inside the white house tonight? >> well, anderson, a year after joe biden was elected president, this republican resurgence really has shaken democrats here at the white house and, indeed, all across washington and on capitol hill. they know that this moment is not good. they know it's been a very rough summer, a very rough fall. but the one aide told me today, we must proceed forward. the best antidote to all of this is passing this legislation. but the reality is the exit polls in virginia last evening show that president biden is underwater. his disapproval rating, 54%. approval rating, 45%. not far off from former-president donald trump. so, that was a bit of a, you know, a wake-up call here. but there is a -- a sense that if they get this legislation passed, that turns the corner, they believe. covid is turning a corner. but really, all of these challenges have added up to a pretty dark mood here. um, ironically, today was election day a year ago and a resurgence from republicans was not what anyone was expecti

what are you hearing about that from the white house today? >> reporter: well, kate, no response from the white house tho to those comments from the chinese ministry of foreign affairs but senior officials saying they believe there was a healthy debate based on this long-standing relationship that president biden and xi jinping have had over more than a decade going back to president biden's time as vice president under president obama. we know that they discussed issues of disagreement such as trade issues, for example, human rights concerns that president biden raised as it relates to issues in hong kong and more. we also know that they discussed areas of potential cooperation like on the climate crisis, for example, facing the world, talking about the importance of collaboration on that front. but one thing that president biden made very clear, and this was during the beginning portion of this 3 1/2-hour meeting when reporters were allowed into the room here at the white house, president biden talking about the importance of making sure tha

let me bring in john harwood for more from the white house. john, the supply chain is a major problem for this white house. what are you hearing that they can do in order for this supply chain to loosen up? >> they're scrambling and they're having some success. the port of los angeles in long beach announced yesterday that the inventory of containers that had not been able to move through is significantly down. so that's good news. it is gradually going to be worked on as businesses adjust post-pandemic, but the key is going to be really getting past covid. so i think nobody expects these problems to diminish in the next month or two, but sometime if we get largely past the pandemic middle of next year, i think people think the economy and the supply chains will normalize pretty significantly. >> one other thing i wanted to ask you that i was just seeing come in is that president biden is now asking the ftc, john, to investigate if oil and gas companies are legally driving up prices. what are you hearing about this? >> nobody wants gas -- oil

jason karol is at the white house. what's happening? >> reporter: all morning long we've been listening to mr. chairmans' attorneys giving their closing arguments, and really giving an overview, a comprehensive overview of the totality of evidence that they presented over the course of this three-week trial, which they say shows enough evidence to show that there was, quote, evidence is crystal clear that the plan went as intended, basically saying all the evidence is there for jurors to see that these defendants conspired to commit acts of violence. they showed the text messages they showed, reminded them of the social media posts that were out there. one text message in particular, one that was sent from christopher cantwell, a well-known neo-nazi, to richard spencer, the person who coined the phrase "alt-right," this text message read, "i'm willing to risk a lot for our cause, including incarceration. i want to coordinate and make sure it's worth it for our cause." again, reminding jurors of these text messages, all of the totality o

the biden white house has been battered by high gas prices. so i think they're feeling like a little bit of tide turning in their direction right now. >> this goes to the senate next where it could hit all kinds of roadblocks. senator joe manchin signaling he's not onboard with how it is now. what is president biden doing to ensure the bill gets through in a way that everybody is satisfied here? because he's utgot to deal with the progressives in his party, and he's got to deal with joe manchin as well. >> don, he's done a lot already, intensive diplomacy with both kyrsten sinema of arizona, joe manchin of west virginia. and i think the obstacles to enactment of this bill are not as great as they're sometimes described. most of this bill has been agreed to already. there are going to be changes in the senate. it is likely that manchin will insist on, for example, the paid leave provisions coming out of this bill. but in a very substantial form resembling what passed the house today, i think it's highly likely that passes the senate. both democ

how is the white house looking at these developments? they want to prepare the country but not overreact. how are they threading the needle? >> reporter: president biden wrapped his vacation in nantucket and is on his way back to washington where a briefing about the omicron variant will be top of mind. the president is expected to meet with dr. anthony fauci and other members of his covid-19 response team when he returns to the white house in just a few hours to receive the latest updates on this variant. he had been receiving briefings in nantucket both on saturday and friday. we're learning u.s. health officials are set to speak with south african health officials this afternoon as everyone around the world is trying to get their arms around what exactly this variant will mean. there are questions about whether it will be a severe illness, whether it will cause that. officials are saying this may take a few weeks to have a full understanding of the data related to the variant. in the meantime, top u.s. health officials are urging amer
