. >> what i hear from the white house, white house officials, as well as the president himself, is this sense of urgency. this sense of trying to tell americans, we hear your struggles. we see the gas prices and rising prices at the grocery store, and we want to help. yesterday, the president spoke at length about the release of oil, part of the strategic petroleum reserve. he did, though -- he wasn't able to give a date on sort of when people will start to see relief from that. the energy secretary, she told reporters yesterday that hopefully within a couple weeks, people will start to see prices come down. that, of course, is what they called a band aid. they admitted themselves it's a temporary fix, and that long term, americans really will need some help here. they said the real way to deal with this is clean energy. that, of course, is a very, very long-term solution. the other thing to note is every president has really dealt with this. whether you look at john f. kennedy or lyndon b. johnson or richard nixon, every president in some ways tried to get their arms around inflation.

are they from the white house? were they working elsewhere? >> we've had people from the trump administration come in voluntarily. some of the information they've provided has led us to seek information from others. so there are people who have personal knowledge about what happened, not only what the president did but what others did leading up to the riot. by the way, mr. meadows, i sure hope he does come in because the questions that we have to ask him are important. i think he has an obligation to tell the truth to the public and to the congress. and even if he thinks he has a claim to executive privilege in some way, we don't think so, but clearly there are questions that have nothing to do with executive privilege. for example, did he use his private email and private cell phone for government business? what happened to that cell phone, if he did? that's not covered by executive privilege. >> as you know, your chairman bennie thompson said there's no decision from your meeting this morning on whether to hold meadows in contempt. is that

what is the white house doing to push this decision? yamiche: as you said, the president really wanted this to be passed, at least one of these bills. he wanted it passed while in europe, the bipartisan infrastructure bill. even though house speaker nancy pelosi was pushing lawmakers and saying, let's give the president a vote of confidence from congress, when that did not happen, thehite house continued to engage. the president and top white house aides will make the case this is exactly what lawmakers including senator manchin, senator sinema, should be able to get behind. they say it does not add to the deficit. they are adding things back progressives wanted, like paid family leave, something critical to families, including women of color and men, who may have to take care of a family member if they are on medical leave. the president had a message for democrats as it relates to these bills, yet it on my desk. -- get it on my desk. it is anyone's guests if the president will be able to bring this together. it could be weeks or days

you obviously covered donald trump and the trump white house, now the biden white house. are these documents, in fact, going to be turned over to the january 6th committee? >> it appears that way. those on the committee are hopeful at the very least. now that trump and his allies have a few legal recourses to go, and there will be appeals, but certainly the sort of -- the firmness of, let's say, the judge's decision last night has given hope to those on the committee that i've been talking to that they will, indeed, see those documents. now, they're expanding the reach with this wave of subpoenas. you read through the names there. it is a who's who of trump world, the second tier. kayleigh mcenany, the press secretary, served in office through january 6th. steven miller, of course, the architect of many of trump's more infamous policy proposals, including the family separation, the children separated from the parents at the border, he remained in the white house late, you know, all the way through inauguration day. johnny mcentee, not a name perhaps many viewers know, but

pbs "newshour" chief correspondent amna nawaz, white house chief correspondent peter baker, former white house political director for george w. bush sara fagen, and former democratic congresswoman donna edwards. we're going to start a conversation here. rural white voters, last year president trump won virginia's rural voters by six points, 52-46. not a good showing for virginia by a republican. on tuesday, glenn youngkin won rural voters by 27 points. i call that a huge increase. rural voters increased their percentage of the electorate by three percentage points. so from 16% of the electorate in '20 to nearly one in five voters in virginia were from rural virginia. it gave youngkin too big of a lead for mcauliffe to overcome no matter how well he did in suburban and urban areas. donna, i don't know if there's enough votes in rural maryland to overcome this to give democrats a problem, but clearly there was in virginia, and there almost was in new jersey. it's a problem. >> it is. i mean one of the challenges is that we're not going to win rural voters, but you have to contest for them,

there are obvious tensions between vp and the biden white house. many people have reported that. tensions on both sides. does the backlash suggest to you that any criticism of kamala harris is vulnerable to being dismissed as mere racism or sexism? >> no. let's be very clear, i do think sex and race play here. to super's point, she's the first woman, black woman in this role. but with that being said, there are fair criticisms to point at the vice president. for me, as somebody from jamaican descent, i have a problem with how this white house has handled haiti. a lot of that is on her watch. i do think there are some tactical errors being made by her team. i'm not sure i'm going to put her on good morning america as her first interview. maybe it would have been better to have her in person with the reporter. but i do think that there are some mistakes, and i think the vice president's office realizes that. we saw this week that they have dismissed their communications director. there seems to be more shaking and rumbling in the office because they understand they do have a storyt
