sheryll cashin. you have five minutes. >> thank you very much, i want to begin by associating myself with the comments of the chairwoman, and my comments are in that sphere. i've spent nearly three decades grappling with u.s. segregation, and how it produces racial inequality. my most recent book, "white save black hood," segregation and inequality reflects decades. it argues we have a system of residential caste that government influences over white spaces and, preys on people in high poverty black neighborhoods. these are the extremes of american residential caste but everyone who can not afford to buy their way into high opportunity neighborhoods are harmed by the system. the poor are systematically excluded for opportunities for social mobility, no matter how hard they work to escape. exclusionary zoning, it endorsed the idea that duplexes were parasitic on single family homes and the people who live there. in ensuing decades, thousands of new suburban governments formed, enabling middle class an

it is my pleasure to be in conversation with sheryll cashin who has written this, her fifth book. i want to start off, sheryll, by asking you why you decided to write this book? >> part of it as you know is your fault. it was about four years ago, five years ago that i got a call from you asking me if i would like to give the memorial lecture at my alma mater, harvard law school. i was flattered, flabbergasted thinking what will i say at this institution were a lot of my former professors are still on the faculty. so it really forced me to think ambitiously like what would be worthy of the occasion? i spent my entire academic career thinking about segregation and was very inspired by michelle alexander's book, "the new jim crow" in the way she connected contemporary mass incarceration to a prior anti-black institution jim crow. but i wanted to see the connection from slavery to jim crow to the iconic segregation black ghettos, black hoods. because it just seemed like it's time we put to bed one black supporting institution we created another, right? so supremacy still manifest, ju
