i didn't i hope community near lake merritt is ready to house the homeless and city of oakland opening up its first large scale tiny home village today, the support of shelter project located at the corner of east 12th street and lake mary boulevard. the land had been vacant for a number of years. that was until 2018 when a homeless encampment grew there. now instead of tents. there are single occupancy pallet shelters in place. they have electricity to provide heat and the city is also bringing in portable waters for showers and toilets. the village will also include wrap around support services including health care and housing navigation for the folks who live there. >> this will be a partnership with the city with my office, with our service providers as well. as the community neighbors businesses. the faith community and others. this is a project that is working to get people into transitional and permanent housing. so we will be helping residents on a case by case basis to make sure that they will be on a path to the >> the city teaming up with the nonprofit housing consortium of

oakland. police say it all started around 3 yesterday afternoon when they were responding to a report of an armed carjacking and robbery on fisher avenue in last us. this is video from the citizen app. they say they found a stolen car in the suspected carjacker standing outside of the car near 49th and clark streets. when they tried to approach them. police say the person shot at officers several times and then drove off police and a helicopter followed. the suspect to ocean view drive thoughts when they say the person tried to ram the officers with their cars. police say they shot the person, the person died some time later at the hospital. police say they were also investigating another shooting in a homicide while this was happening. so a lot was going on. oakland's police chief plans to have a press conference about all of these crimes. tomorrow's will continue to fall that. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news a driver is retelling the moments when his car was hit by a golf ball. scary

and it was just a all around another violent weekend in oakland. but especially during this 10 hour period on saturday when there are more than 2 dozen incidents. most of which are still being investigated. all started around 3 o'clock saturday afternoon when police were called to an armed carjacking and robbery chief armstrong says his officers followed the suspect across the city. at one point they say the suspect shot at officers. it came to an end on ocean view drive. >> the suspect then exited the vehicle armed with a firearm officers gave the suspect commands drop the gun. opd officers discharged their duty firearms. the suspect was struck. >> a suspect taken to a local hospital and has since died from their injuries to officers who fired their guns. both are on paid administrative leave while that shooting is investigated. and this was just one of more than 300 calls officers received over the weekend. those calls, including robberies looting. hundreds of vehicles involved in side shows like this. there was also a shooting that left a 17 yea

mayor in oakland. rebecca kaplan says the city is already facing a recruiting crisis. and quite frankly has trouble retaining employees with the current testing rules in place. the proposal will now go before the full city council and and approval. there would do away with testing for pot while you're off the job. the justice department, meanwhile, is filing a lawsuit against uber for charging what they call wait time fees to passengers who have disabilities the suit alleges the rideshare company is violating the americans with disabilities act by charging disabled riders fees as their drivers wait for them to get it. uber does charge an extra fee for all passengers to take longer than 2 minutes to enter the rideshare car once it arrives at the destination, the federal government once the court to order uber to change its weight fee policy. also train its staff and drivers and pay monetary damages to everyone who's been impacted. uber says they have been in active discussions with the justice departmen
