so much happened, so much began on new york's lower east side. ♪ in the new york city of the '70s, nearly bankrupt, riddled with corruption, the lower east side, particularly alphabet city, was left to fend for itself. huge swaths of it abandoned, ruined, or simply empty. much of it became an open air supermarket for drugs. whole blocks taken over by organized drug gangs. rents were cheap, and the neighborhood started to attract a newer, highly energized and creative group of people who wanted to make things. music, poetry, movies, and art. ♪ it seemed at the time, everybody was a star. and for a while at least, that it was a golden time. but it was dangerous, you lived down here you had to be tough, and talented, and often very quick. now, things are different. very different. >> harley: okay, everybody together. ready. >> harley: okay, on three. 1, 2, 3. let's go. ♪ >> harley: so this is pretty much some of the last remnants of what the lower east side was kind of used to be like, you know? good old school, no elevator. >> anthony: but you didn't live in this building? >> harley: no

black mayor of new york city. the votes are still coming in. a little over 30% of the vote is in, and there's about a 50-point gap between adams. this is what was expected. new york is of course a very democratic city, but adams put together a very interesting coalition working class voters, union voters, voters of color, voters in the outer boroughs, he also ran not just on public safety. this is something he talked about a lot of his campaign. public safety is a prerequisite to prosperity, talking a lot also about that businesses are able to do businesses more easily cutting through the red tape. it seems like he did coming out on top. as i mentioned early on in the campaign, public safety was the center point of this race. eric adams as a former police captain himself talked often about how he was arrested as a teenager, he was beaten by the nypd, and he later joined the force to try to change it and reform it from within. while he's talked a lot about how policing is a tough job, he's also said we don't want t

we know this isn't just impacting cities like new york. other cities like chicago are dealing with this as well and you call mandates like this a reasonable request, so what is your reaction to what you just heard from paolo and his reporting here in new york city? >> well, first of all, i'm very glad that the vast majority of public workers in those cities are being vaccinated, but you're talking to a doctor here in our medical center. everyone from the custodian through the "c" suite has to be vaccinated and we do that because we think it's an ethical and human responsibility. i also firefighters and police to think of this as your responsibility. we're fighting a war against this virus. so far we've asked volunteers to roum their sleeves and fight and then the virus got re-enforced by delta and now our society is asking to draft people in. we're asking people to be obliged to do that. it's a societal contribution. it's ethical. it's professional. we all ought to get vaccinated shepard look, there's a lengthy amount of research at this p

new york city mayor, remember, this was back in julian assange. the progressives lost that primary and then, of course, virginia a projected loss to the democrats. so i think there's going to be a lot of reflecting upon what happened last night, what's happened in the last few months. i think that there are a lot of voters who said, you know what, we want to pump the brakes on the democrats and progressives. let's take another look. we want more people moving towards the center of the aisle. >> harry, you're about to go to sleep. anything else before you go night-night? >> yes, i am about to go night-night. i have been awake 21 hours. look, the fact of the matter is the real only question left is new jersey. we pointed out the beginning of the segment. a far closer call for phil murphy than anyone thought it was going to be. it's pretty clear across the board in these races and something i didn't even mention, on long island, you see a bunch of democrats losing. this is not just one place where democrats are losing. we are seeing it up and down th

you have new york city of course where democrat eric adams is expected to win. beyond that, let's take boston and buffalo where the clash between progressive and more moderate democrats that we've seen already playing out within the democratic party is also playing out here. what should people know about this? >> those are two races to watch if you want to get a sense for how democratic voters are feeling about, you know, the sort of the future of their party. we know in congress you have the progressive wing and the more moderate wing really going head to head for weeks on end about trying to pass these big legislative packages that are really the core of biden's domestic agenda. in buffalo, you have a woman, a democratic socialist, who won in the primary. she's now basically being challenged to a rematch by a more moderate candidate who's mounted a write-in campaign. how that plays out will give us a taste of the temperature where democratic voters see their party right now. >> there is a lot to watch for coming up, all happening starting tomorrow. great to se

this is bergen county, the largest county in new jersey just across the border from new york city. 51%, 52% if you round up right now for 2021. this is phil murphy. four years ago he won this county with 57%. they flatly rejected donald trump. it's more fertile ground now. four years ago, phil murphy gets 60% four years ago, down now to 56%. we'll move to virginia. with donald trump on the sidelines, republicans can make inres inroads in the suburbs. how did glenn youngkin pull this off? after donald trump won by ten points, how did he do it? number one, he managed the trump base. republicans came out in droves. they can recover the republican world dramatically in these small counties. a thousand votes here, a thousand votes there, that adds up. look here in south virginia and the capital in richmond. if you want to turn a dynamic in a state, you have to flip. this is the governors' race. he won everything down here. glenn youngkin was able to turn blue counties red and winning. close races are won in the northern virginia suburbs. glenn youngkin did not win loudoun county. you see it

york city in new jersey. and they have a lot in common that are sort of a telltale sign. >> dana, as you guys know, the battle in american politics, like in electoral politics, has been the battle over america's suburbs. that's the period of america's politics we're in. and that's sort of the swing areas that we look at and a lot of critical contests. that is what new jersey and virginia have in common. they are big suburban states. there are lots and lots of suburban vote in these states. and what we saw in virginia in the exit polls tonight is that youngkin won the suburbs, by the way, we say 60% of the vote was from the suburbs. it's categorized, but by six points. just a year ago, also they made up 60% of the vote. joe biden won the suburbs by eight points. that is a 14-point swing in the opposite direction! that's the story of what we're seeing tonight in these two states. >> this is also a story about race, right? we talk about the suburbs, about 70% white. if you see a lot of these vote who have switch

york city? i can tell you 18 fire companies have been taken out of operation. for important context, 18 out of 350. no fire houses have closed to give you an example. the one behind me, you can see how it houses multiple fire companies. simply because one of them is not in operation does not mean the entire house is basically shut down here. authorities here in new york assuring the public they are responding to every call that comes in here. but nonetheless, they are having to move some of their resources around to make sure that everybody is covered here. finally, an important number to share, roughly 9,000 municipal workers were sent home today on unpaid leave. at the end of the day 91% of the entire workforce is in compliance with a mandate. >> polo sandoval, thanks so much. >>> let's bring in the executive vice president of the robert wood johnson foundation for our health lead. from a public health perspective, how should the company weigh the risk of unvaccinated first responders versus t

york city. so polo, what are you seeing there? >> natasha, the reality, we're feeling the pain at the pump or higher food prices. we're all seeing that here, and of course, you have inflation, and of course, you also have disruptions in supply chains that are big factors in all this. that means many of the nation's some of their soup kitsches are getting hit particularly hard. we'll give you an example, the bowery mission in new york city, that has been sheltering and feeding needy families for well over 100 years, i spoke to some of the folks here. they took us inside, preparing for one of the busiest times of the year, in this case, thanksgiving, as they prepare to take some of the families in. it's still unclear whether some of those are key factors and some of the challenges they're facing, but at the end of the day, they still have to cover lot more ground, help a lot of people with fewer resources. some of their partners, some of their crucial partners that donate a lot of resources and fo
