new york city right now is under a severe thunderstorm watch. it may bring some strong winds, heavy rain. i know some areas in the general tri-state area are getting hail right now. rain is especially a concern after hurricane ida caused some deadly floods earlier this year. but like i said this came out of nowhere. we expected to have a little bit of tape potentially this afternoon, like a 30% chance. so this is extraordinary. that's what it looks like outside right now. meantime, everybody, there is a new warning today of a dark shift in american politics as some who identify themselves as supporters of donald trump and the republican party make an increasing number of violent threats not just against elected members of congress but against election workers and election officials around this country. and a new bulletin from the department of homeland security says extremists are issuing threats against public health officials, school officials, even religious and ethnic groups. >> the political temperature in this country is rising. death thre

i'm joined on the phone by a former detective with the new york city police department, that's tom. so, tom, one thing we're getting some concern about is, you know, crowd panic. i don't know if you can see what we're airing on msnbc, but we're looking at a level of chaos. things have been knocked over. people probably heard the sound of that gun and went into extreme panic mode, understandably so. tell me how that complicates a situation. in your experience. >> well, it complicates it because it's a little bit of hysteria to the moment. as you're showing on the air, people are diving for cover, people have knocked over the barriers. and they're trying to escape what they don't know is an active shooter or an accidental discharge. and what happens then is law enforcement has to respond. the atlanta police department and the airport police have to basically clear the terminal to determine what happened, determine it was an accidental discharge. and go through all the procedures that jim and the captain were very, you know, eloquently telling you about. >> yeah. tom, with regard to re

minor delays from new york city all the way down to cincinnati. i do want to mention, if you're in the deep south, louisiana to atlanta, dealing with some minor rainfall, but no flood watches or advisories currently in place. hitting the roadways, we have millions of people doing that from boston to buffalo. you're going to be tracking through the snow. new york to the cleveland area across i-95 corridor, you will contend with some rain for at least next 36 hours. i'm really concerned about the winds. everybody is talking about the macy's day parade. will the balloons go up? yes, the winds start to die down wednesday to thursday. it's tomorrow evening. you really start to see them pick up from minneapolis to buffalo. we could potentially see wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. if you're not a cold weather fan, with these series of fronts that we're dealing with, look at some of these windchills. st. louis, when you factor in the air temperature plus winds, the feel-like temperature on your skin, 22 degrees. single digits for minneapolis. and that

to new york city, boston area, as we go into your evening hours. right now, it's about a quarter of an inch to a half inch of rain. but that's really not the problem. this front continues to make its way off shore, even impacting areas of louisiana into the deep south. so if you're traveling along i-95 corridor, that will be a problem for tonight, but behind the front, that's where the dramatic weather really starts to happen. it's that colder air that will continue to shift, and then the wind gusts up to about 35 to 40 miles per hour. but we're also going to be watching lake huron, all the way to lake erie where we're going to deal with lake enhanced moisture. the snowfall will be limited to interior areas of new york and in northeast ohio as well. so that's just front number one. look at some of these airport delays, i do think they have gotten better in the last 24 hours. if you're in the greater cleveland area, expect some cancellation to delays, dealing with that snow and wind. also going to be watching boston, but traveling out of new york ci

i've watched the experience in new york city. had a case rise from delta but kept that hospitalization and fatality low. and i guess i just wonder we should expect cases to go up this winter. they're going to go up. if we're at sufficient thresholds of vaccination, can we basically look at this as not the kind of looming threat to our health care system and our well-being and our mortality and morbidity that it has been in the past? >> the answer to that is yes. if we continue to get people vaccinated and now we have 28 million children from 5 to 11 who are eligible to be vaccinated, we have not as many as we'd like of the adolescents who are going to get vaccinated, about half of them are, we want to get that number up. if we continue to really eat away at that recalcitrant number of around 60 million and get more people vaccinated, we're obviously going to have cases because when you get the cold weather, you put people indoors. sometimes they even pull back on mitigation. but we certainly want to make sure we don't get severe

new york city will be a champion. >> you've talked about some important issues obviously in new york city. although you and eric adams won your election, surprisingly a series of ballot issues that would have made it easier to vote lost or failed. how surprised were you by those results? what will it take for new york to modernize its voting laws? >> so i, you know, we worked really hard to bring in the consistency and my run was a catalyst for this new electorate to feel heard and to feel seen. so i will work really hard to push to make voter registration, to occur on the same day, to make it easier. so many folks who wanted to change their party affiliation didn't know why there were so many challenges. and so this has opened up an opportunity to do better around voter education and to prioritize language access and to prioritize bilingual organizers in this work to ensure adequate social and ballot education. council woman-elect, thank you and congratulations again on your historic victory. >> coming up, it's not often that i agree with nikki haley but i gets never say never. i gu

i'm hoping to get him vaccinated at school, because here in new york city, a lot of public schools are going to offer the vax naxs over the next couple of weeks. if i had known that children could get vaccinated a at the museum of natural history, we got this video. we don't necessarily have the video, but children are getting vaccinated at the museum of natural history. parents excited about this latest development. that being said, there's still a lot of misinformation out there. right? not every parent is willing to get their child vaccinated. one reporter reporting that some fringe groups have begun pushing the kinds of videos that the modern anti-vaccine movement was built upon. intimate, unverified videos that are visceral and effective. what do you tell parents, doctor, that are worried about getting their children vaccinated? >> yeah. i mean, this is a great question. i'm glad the museum is doing the vax naxs. it makes it easier on a child. it would make it easier on me than being in a completely sterile environment. but those videos tug at people's heart strings. when it comes

today in new york city kids five to 11 are getting shots at city-run sites, even schools. you work with kids every day. how big of a step is this? how important is it to get kids vaccinated at places like their school? >> craig, it's huge. right now that 5 to 11% is accounting for just over 10% of our infections in the united states. thinking about how are we going to get control of the pandemic and protect our kids, getting this group vaccinated now is really important. especially as we're headed into the holidays. and i think having that access to vaccinations at schools is critical. there are a lot of communities where access is challenging. a lot of pediatricians offices are going to have to wait to get deliveries of the vaccine, and they may not be immediately available. so having that access in schools, i think, is incredibly helpful to kids, and i think that parents, i hope that now they're really thinking about it, considering it, and making a plan to try to get their kids vaccinated when that opportunity may come to their school. >> doctor, we'll have to leave it
