nbc bay area's cierra johnson in the courtroom this morning. she is live in san francisco now to break down what happened as he faced a judge for the first time. >> yes, good morning, laura. cameras were not allowed in the courtroom but i was sitting in as he faced his first hearing. i saw callaway dressed in that orange jump suit as he sat next to his public defender to be arraigned on the charges of possession of that firearm the night of the smash and grab there at union square. the judge did order callaway to be on house detention and electronic monitoring. he is also ordered to stay away from 233 gary street which is that louis vuitton store there at union square. when i asked callaway's attorney about whether the community should feel okay or feel secure in this judgment, this is what she had to say. >> absolutely. mr. callaway does not have a record of violent convictions. as stated, he is native to the bay area. he's a young black man. he has a 4-year-old child. the conditions are more than enough to ensure the public safety. again, he

this is nbc bay area news tonight. and i'm jessica aguirre. okay. worries over a winter covid surge growing, not just here but across the globe. right now concern is being fueled by a new variant of covid. it's not just spreading rapidly. it's spreading exponentially. it's known as the omicron variant. it was labeled as a variant of concern. because it seems to spread easily. omicron was detected in south africa. the country went from 200 cases each day a few weeks ago then 2500 cases yevd alone. omicron has been detected in belgium botswana, hong kong, israel but not yet here in the u.s. now the white house says it's not taking chances announcing new travel restrictions for travelers from eight african countries including south africa as well as botswana, zimbabwe and malawi. starting monday travelers from those countries will not be allowed to come to the u.s. unless american citizens or permanent residents. we send nbc's dame yn trujillo to sfo to understand. >> there are no direct flights from sfo to johannesburg but several connecting flights a

. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. >> thank you. bob riddell visited several shopping centers, trying to measure the size of the crowds. he is now at the san francisco premium outlets in livermore. let's check in with him. bob, what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that san francisco premium outlets here in livermore definitely crowded. this is the traffic get baghdad is the mall. to me, it feels like a normal black friday here in terms of the number of shoppers, like a lot of retailers, the outlets did not open yesterday on thanksgiving and they didn't stay open all night like they can in years past. as i mentioned, getting here is a challenge. i was just down the street on 580. i almost didn't make it to my live shot. you can see the line of traffic getting into 580 in livermore. that would be my fault since i should have known better. once you're inside the mall, there are a will the of people. some stores with long lines outside. people waiting to get in. this is a video my daughter shot at the nike st
