cnn's elizabeth cohen joining us with more. elizabeth, we were hoping this was of. but now we are facing the prospect of another surge here. >> reporter: well, that we're seeing really, brianna, is numbers going up and down. right now we are in the up stage. we're hoping they go down. but unfortunately it doesn't look great because of the time of year we're in. it's getting colder, people are spending more time indoors. holidays are coming up, people will travel and gather together. when you look at this map of the united states, what we want to see is a lot of green. we want to see all green. green means the numbers are going down. yellow means they're stable. red means they're going up. dark red means they are going up swiftly. that is 22 states in red. 22 states where the rates are going up. so measures need to be put in place. are people going to be good about masking? are they going to be did about social distancing? are unvaccinated people finally going to get vaccinated? that will have to happen given that we are going into colder weather and into the holiday

elizabeth, what more do we know about this new variant? >> jessica, to put it in some perspective, variants have come and gone throughout this entire pandemic. most of them don't really mean anything. they're not that different from what we've seen before. but every so often there's one that years its ugly head and takes over the planet. the delta variant would of course be the one that would be top of mind in that category. we don't know which category this new one is going to fall into. will it sort of peter out? it affects countries in and around south africa? will it take to the world stage? here's what we know so far. it doesn't even have a name yet, one of those greek letters, because it's not officially a variant of concern or interest, so it's called b.1.1.529. the problem is it more than 30 mutations in the spike protein. that's what researchers say. it's an important part of the virus, how it does its work to get into our cells. the vaccine is designed to work on the spike protein. if there are too many variations in that protein

>> sticking close to you, elizabeth. i really appreciate it. joining me is a professor of emergency medicine and associate dean of public health at brown university. doctor, in light of everything elizabeth laid out, a top white house covid official, jeff zients, he says starting next week the program to distribute vaccines to kids 5 to 11 will be fully up and running is how he describes it. what do you think all of this means, this new authorization, assuming it happens, what it means for the push, the goal of getting covid under control? >> it means a lot personally to me. i can't wait to get him vaccinated and i know a lot of parents feel the same. but on the a country-wide level, this is really important. when you compare our progress in the u.s. to, say, that of the uk, which many of us in public health believe is a cautionary tale about the way in which delta can stick around and keep causing hospitalizations and deaths, the difference is the uk has been really slow to vaccinate teens and is going to be even slower in vaccinating kids. wh

cnn chief medical correspondent elizabeth cohen joins us now. elizabeth, the president just turned 79. put this in context for us. this is why we get colonoscopies to find these lesions and treat them on the spot. >> that's right, christine. you know, when you hear precancerous, it is so scary. it is not uncommon for these polyps to be found after age 50. so the fact that he had one of these polyps and it was removed is a good thing. it shows the system is working. he had a colonoscopy, they found this 3 millimeter polyp, it was precancerous and they got rid of it. it's very effective to get rid of it at such an early stage. this is why the u.s. centers for disease control says get cancer screening starting at age 45. it works, and so something that sounds super scary like a precancerous polyp really isn't so scary. christine? >> all right, thank you so much for that. reminder to everyone out there, put off any of your screenings during the covid shutdowns, get up to date on your health care, please. thanks, elizabeth cohen this morning. >>> all

elizabeth, what do people need to know to stay safe as we go into the holidays? and obviously it's different if you're vaccinated versus unvaccinated, i would think. >> that's right. and i want to take a second as we all think about what we want to give thanks for on this thanksgiving. certainly we should be giving thanks it wasn't last thanksgiving. it was really a time of great stress and tension because people weren't vaccinated. the vaccines came out at the end of the following month. the fact we can have this discussion what to do on this thanksgiving when so many of us are vaccinated is really pretty amazing and something we should all be grateful for. so if you're not vaccinated, i almost don't know what to tell you because you should be vaccinated. so if you're not vaccinated you should be being careful in ways i don't even have the time to talk about right now. so let's talk about if you are vaccinated. so we have heard from dr. fauci and umfor the cdc that if everyone at your table, at your gathering is vaccinated, it is okay to remove masks. that is ok

joining us to discuss, elizabeth cohen. elizabeth, what specifically is the advisory committee looking at today? >> erica, what they're going to look at is safety and efficacy data. we have been told this vaccine and the clinical trial for children ages 5 to 11 was very safe. let's take a look. let's talk a bit about the efficacy, which is shown to be about 91% effective at keeping kids from getting sick with covid-19. now, interestingly, children in this clinical trial, they were actually not given the full dose that adolescents and adults have been getting, instead they were given about -- they were given one-third of the dose. now, if this committee and as you mentioned these -- this committee of advisers they're expected to sign off on this, if they sign off on this, cdc director dr. rochelle walensky, she could act pretty quickly. she has acted quite quickly once these recommendations are made. we may even get a signoff from her possibly as soon as this evening. so that means the shots could be going into arms, little

elizabeth holmes took the stand for 11 hours. cnn's camila burnau reports. >> more people will have access to their own health information. >> reporter: with her distinctive deep voice, elizabeth holmes taking the stand. over three days of testimony holmes tried to explain her actions and regrets at her now dissolved blood testing company the theranos. >> these are the little tubes that we collect the samples in. >> reporter: needing just a few drops of blood, the startup once valued at $9 billion promised a wide range of tests claiming to revolutionize health care. >> called them the nanotainer. they were this big. >> reporter: but for 11 weeks prosecutors have argued holmes out of time and out of money lied. she faces 11 federal fraud charges over allegations that she knowingly misled investors, doctors and patients. the 37-year-old has pleaded not guilty. once known as the richest self-made woman, holmes captured the attention and money of powerful and wealthy investors. overall holmes raised $945 million in part thanks to her
