we started losing votes during the tea party revolution right after barack obama was elected and we had been able to regain our footing since then. reelectee statistic for your viewers, when i was elected in 2012, probably about 20% of republicans would cross over and vote for a democrat. when i ran into any 18, that number -- when i ran in 2018, that number dribbled -- that number dwindled to 4%. when that number gets low, democrats cannot get elected in a state like mine. it is important rural america not be one party america. we started the one country project. it was to reintroduce the democratic party to rural america and rural america to the democratic party. host: do think over the course of the years the policies of the democratic party have fallen out of favor with rural americans, or rural americans themselves have changed their views? guest: i think it is the emphasis. it is not the policy. the economic policies of the democratic already are much more favorable to rural america. where we get into challenges is when this becomes about defunding the police or about transgender

and we find ourselves here, the first time i ran for congress in 2012, i was running to stop barack obama which was important at the time for sure and i even wrote a book which about a dozen people have read, that talked about how his vision was contrary to the best traditions of our country and our constitution and i stand by it and those were important fights, and they were-- and it was all something that was worthwhile. but i've got to tell you, i look back at those days, compared to what we're facing now, and it seems kind of quaint to me. if you look at the threats that we're facing, to freedom, to our way of life, to the constitution, they are much more profound and pervasive than they were just 10 years ago. think about what these democrats wanted to do and probably would have done if they had just won a couple more races in the house and senate. they want to make d.c. a state so they will have two permanent, radical left democrat senators for life. they want to abolish the electoral college so california can basically elect a president every time. they want to federalize these fra

and that was part of how barack obama won re-election in 2012, was basically saying to working class voters, you know, i know you don't love cultural liberalism, but the republicans are going to cut your medicare, and i'm going to protect it. so if trump, in the trump era republicans took those issues off the table. basically said, you know, yeah, we're sort of notionally committed to medicare reform. we'll put something this our budget, you know, that supposedly will change the system over 20 years, but basically we're not going to make those kind of cuts. we're not going to do the paul ryan agenda anymore. and at the same time, trump also made a lot of promises, some of which he kept, some of which he didn't on trade and infrastructure where he, you know, sort of pitched himself directly to working class voters who felt like they had been left behind by the the agenda of both political parties under globalization. so in both of those ways, he moved the republican party a little closer to a lot of working class voters on economics. and that still happens now. like, if you look under
