9/11 museum in new york, 9/11 tribute center, the e pentagon historian, capitol hill historian, the arlington county public libraries, the flight 93 national memorial park service compiled in shanksville. and i found with a researcher who worked with me on this book, we found about 5,000 of those original oral histories archived around the country and ultimately boiled it down to about 2,000 that i spent a year working with you end up telling the story that i tell in this book. there are some big observations that sort of grow out of looking at 9/11 on a national level like that that i want to spend some time talking about tonight. the first is just how different our country was on the morning of september 11. that we sort of now say flippantly and in passing, 9/11 changed everything. but we forget just how much actually 9/11 changed. and to capture that, we have to actually look at what to me is the most fascinating moment of 9/11, which is the 17 minutes between the first crash and the second crash. eighth:46 in the morning to 9:03. and what unfolds during those 17 minutes is the country re

this is arlington county. it's geographically small, but this produces -- joe biden got 80.6% of the vote here last year. and since this isn't quite functional yet, adam, do you know what type of vote we're looking at in arlington county here? this is key. this looks like we're getting the early vote reported out in arlington county. and i do have a point of comparison here for 2020. the absentee early vote -- okay. it was 85% for joe biden. the early absentee vote in 2020 was 85% and it looks like mcauliffe is running a couple points behind that. again, there was a ten-point cushion in the state for democrats. biden beat trump by ten points. mcauliffe can afford some slippage tonight from where trump ran in this state. so in arlington county, he ends up two to three points behind where biden ran, that one good news for terry mcauliffe. this is just one of those core vote-producing areas for democrats. this is the city of fairfax county. inside fairfax county is fairfax city. fairfax city is much smaller than

. >> that they are, cnn washington correspondent, all of these developments for us, from arlington, virginia, so the concessions statement went out. do we know he has spoken this morning? >> well, we are told that the two men have not spoken directly on the phone, yet they say that mcauliffe reached out before this concession went out. they were not able to detect. certainly notable as you say that this concession formally came out just a few minutes ago, acknowledging they came up short, congratulates glenn youngkin saying i hope virginians will wish the best for him and his family. certainly this is a big gut punch for them. we had mcauliffe yesterday acknowledging overnight, really, they overestimated youngkin, in the end if race for them shifted in the final weeks, in the final months of the campaign. glenn youngkin was able to rally supporters to get out to the polls over state and local issues, most notably resignations, that's something the governor elect last night acknowledged in his victory speech. >> on day one, we're going to work. we're going to restore excellence in our schools

at 11:15, president ad and at arlington cemetery about veterans day. i am wondering whether he talks at all about the cpi print yesterday. this is incredibly political. how does he reframe this? they were suddenly acknowledging inflation and trying to work with it in a new way rather than just say it is transitory. the mood has shifted, and so does the political rhetoric. jonathan: do you think some of the economic analysis is political as well? one thing i notice, a lot of people found it hard to divorce their political bias away from their economic analysis. i just wonder to what extent that is happening again. lisa: honestly, how do you parse the two-out? because the political response is what you do with data, how you interpret it. it is a very tricky thing. how do you move forward and try to combat this? we don't know how quickly some of these inflationary pressures will roll off. i am just being honest, when i talk to economists, their political view is related to their view on akamai can put. jonathan: i hear a rumor that -- view on economic inp

he kept trump at sufficient arms length to appeal to the northern virginia voters, places like arlington and lehman besburg. he didn't alienate maga voters in the southwest. youngkin doubled down on making this race about concrete issues he argued were progressive overreach in public schools, crime, tax breaks, et cetera. by contrast what we saw from mcauliffe was a flat campaign that kind of lacked direction. when you add it all up in an off-year election where democrats have been struggling to articulate a coherent message beyond the fact they're not trump, i think the outcome maybe wasn't too surprising. >> yeah, we were looking on the screen at top issues on both sides. how much do you think the thinking or popularity of the president, president biden as well as the democrats struggled to move the legislative agenda, perhaps has dragged or dragged mcauliffe down here? >> i think it's certainly a challenge for democrats going forward. it's pretty clear that democrats need to look at yesterday's results as a wake up call. virginia in particular is stlukt i have precisely because of its
