joining us jim acosta. jim, what are you learning about this meeting between trump and mccarthy and then the dinner with biden and chancellor merkel? >> anderson, i was just able to confirm in the last several minutes that kevin mccarthy is at the white house having dinner with president biden and chancellor merkel. he made the trip up to bedminster to kiss the ring of the once dictator in exile president trump. what was discussed is fundraising and looking ahead to the 2022 midterms. anderson, obviously, one of the subcontexts in this is that they need donald trump's fundraising prowess heading into the midterms and what is one thing kevin mccarthy prizes above all else? that is becoming speaker of the house. so he has set aside what he said after the january 6th insurrection that donald trump bears responsibility for it because in his view, the ends justify the means no matter what the constitution was going through at that time. now, as for the dinner conversation at the white house this evening, i'm not

also with us, nia-malika henderson. nia, this deal, one part of a two-partner, if you will, came out last night. biden heading over to meet with senate democrats today. as lauren lays out, this is a long way from the finish line. how do they get there? is it clear to you? >> it isn't clear. senator chuck schumer has been very ambitious saying he wants this essentially wrapped up before a recess in the first week of august, august 6th. that's incredibly ambitious and unlikely. if you're a democrat, you feel good about where things are right now. they've reached an agreement, not only a bipartisan agreement about this reconciliation agreement. there were so many complaints from progressives about whether or not they would get their wish list. obviously in the bipartisan deal, that's a slimmed-down version of what progressive democrats wanted. in this new reconciliation package, i imagine a lot of those progressives that were worried are quite happy. bernie sanders among them, who started out wanting a $6 trillion package.

nina dos santos is live in london for us. tell us about how this is working, who is accepted and who might be in the future? >> reporter: it is all a bit complicated. what we know is that obviously food supply workers, not necessarily people who stock the shelves, is more people inside the food depots, also people having to transport food from one part of the country to the next. those are the types of people who will be exempt from this. as you said, it will be a scheme that at the moment will be in the early stages encompassing about 10,000 workers to try to alleviate acute shortages in the labor supply chain particularly of the food industry but also in the field sector as well. even people like the metropolitan police here in london are contending with large numbers, having to isolate as well. so this is certainly broader than the food sector, but the government was concerned in particular about lack of food on shelves and then people panic buying and getting in to a vicious cycle. so the way it will work, we'll see the s
