elizabeth greenway joins us now. walk us through the decision-making process. why are we skeptical do beto ben with and what changed your mind? >> yes, hi, ryan, thanks for having me on. to start i was so concerned with how new it was. i was worried about the side effects, short term and long term. i know they have studies, of course, that they do before opening it to the public even under an emergency use authorization. but i was just concerned that those trials are limited in scope and number and so was just nervous about what this look like long term for me. so i credit prayer with sort of bringing it altogether for many i think it's important to mention that. because if you look at the statistics, there is a lot of others like me that are skeptical a. lot of conservative christians. so, i had not given up on doing research. i was doing research. i wantled to see if this was something that felt safe and i happened to see dr. paul offit from philadelphia hospital on a number of news programs talking about side effects and other components of the vaccine. and

the threat is still with us. there's increased awareness by businesses and they're looking at mandating workers similar to the government has on being vaccinated. the eeoc stated that employers can do this. they are allowed to mandate their employees be vaccinated as a condition to coming back to work. the question now is should they. we know mandates are a polarizing issue. introducing that into the workplace brings for the complexities that can arise. light now, what we are advising businesses is to set a strategy within the organization to encourage workers to get vaccinated. communicate with them benefits of it, in some cases, incentivize them to get vaccinated prior to mandating some sort of process of vaccination. at the end of the day businesses have responlded, this will be a business decision. walmart, disney, google have taken measures to make the decision to vaccinate some or all employees. the spread of the virus moving forward is going to dictate whether or not businesses mandate or have a voluntary

help us do that. translate for us, what do we know now about covid and the delta variant that we didn't know before? >> well, jessica, i think it's simple in one phrase. delta is different. it's a much more infectious virus. it's a virus that gets to high levels in people who are infected and goes out into the environment, making it more transmissible. it's also quicker in terms of its disease cause. call it viralance, but it's the ability to transfer faster. and -- infection and going into our children's hospital, some of them going into the icu. so that's what's different about delta. it's quite a shock to all of us who feel like we're going through whiplash right now because we were heading out of this. boom, we're right back in it again. >> right. delta is different. in this report, we heard that phrase, viral load. it's something we've talked about. cdc director rochelle walensky said it is increased risk of cannes mission a-- transmission. people with the vaccine can still transmit the virus. va

what can you tell us? >> we are talking about a couple of things this weekend that may make some of those fires a little bit worse. we're tracking, as you said, about 83 fire, large active fires across the western united states, across 13 states really, and we're talking about having a condition of 95% drought, and what's really troubling is that this week, a lot of the areas moved into the highest level of drought. extreme or exceptional drought. and this weekend, we got a couple of things going on, we've got heat, that's going to be a problem, especially in the pacific northwest, it could be breaking records, high heat warnings, excessive heat warnings, temperatures between 95 and 105. and in addition, we could see some rain, and isn't that going to help, no, these are going to be dry thunderstorms, and they could potentially spark new fires. so that's something we will be watching. and it is all part of the monsoon that has been helping some areas, a little bit to the south, get some relief from the hea

if you want us to believe something, give us the backing at the moment you want us to believe it. now we have it. it cost themselves some bruising, though, and created some opportunities, i'll talk about those in a second. but now we have the data. according to the new cdc data, if you are vaccinated, you are 25 times less likely to die. shouldn't that be the end of this consideration, assuming that you're not immune compromised and you talk to your doctor? reduce the risk of hospitalization, 25 times. less likely to be hospitalized even by the variant. and an eightfold reduction in the risk of infection. that squares with the hope, because the vaccine is not perfect, obviously nothing is, and it was never supposed to be this immunity bubble people on the right tell you it was said to be. it's not. you can get sick. you likely won't get very sick. and you should not die. that's what the vaccine is about. now, look. we need that protection more than ever, because delta, we now know, spreads faster than the common cold. faster than the seasonal flu. while the vaccinated aren't getti

also joining us, michael osterholm. dr. hotez, so, admiral brett giroir, the former assistant health secretary under the previous administration warns that the delta variant is so contagious that, if you have not been vaccinated and you did not, previously, have covid, you will become infected. what does that mean for children under the age of 12, who are ineligible to be vaccinated? >> well, it really depends on where those kids are, especially as schools open. and -- and the big vulnerability that i'm sounding the alarm about is the -- what's going on here, in the south. for instance, the state of louisiana, you've got where delta variant is accelerating now and kids are, already, starting to show up in pediatric intensive-care units. you have only got 17% of the adolescents vaccinated. 15, 16, 17% of the adolescents vaccinated. maybe, 30 to 40% of young adults. you've got the delta variant accelerating and -- and no mask mandates. so, this is a crucible. and as schools open, for instance, in some parishes in louisiana, y

what more can you tell us? >> right, it still manages to astonish you to see in writing what was being said to these top officials of the justice department if you remember at the time, the president was pushing for the justice department to say that there was fraud even though as you know, everybody there was looking for it and they didn't find any, erin. and what these notes are from a call on december 27th. >> yeah. >> jeffrey rosen was the acting attorney general, rich donohue was his deputy and donohue is the one that takes these notes and the president is pressing him saying look, the justice department officials are saying we can't find this fraud and the president says just say that the election was corrupt, leave the rest to me and the republican congressman, which is -- which tells you everything about what the president was trying to do. these two officials were also saying, telling the president directly that some of what he was being told was false. these allegations of fraud in georgia and other s

paula reed reporting for us. let's get some insight from elliot williams and the state attorney for palm beach county in florida, dave aronberg. how outrageous is this? these handwritten notes we have of trump trying to pressure top justice department officials to go ahead and take steps to try to overturn the election results? >> of course they're outrageous, wolf, but weeks and months of attempting to subvert the election. the january 6th call were also egregious and brazen. we shouldn't be surprised about this contact based on everything we know about the former president and his conduct. the big story today is the fact that the justice department has agreed to make these available to congress, and that's the way the government should be working, wolf, where congress has the authority to investigate wrongdoing by a president, former or sitting, and they're now going to be able to take that step. that's the big move. >> it is a very, very big move. dave, what would have happened potentially if the then acting a

cnn's kylie atwood joins us now. so kylie, great to see these arrivals, but we know how many are still left behind and still in danger? >> reporter: well, alisyn, this is a small sliver of the larger number of afghan interpreters who have applied for these special immigrant visas to the united states. we saw about 200 of them and their families on buses today, heading into ft. lee, which is right behind me here in virginia. they're going to go through some additional screenings here to get their medical clearance. that's essentially the final thing that these folks need to do before they can then be relocated here in the united states. now, the other folks, many of them are in their earlier stages of the process to get their visas. there are about 20,000 who have applied in total. about half of those are in the early stages. the scary thing is it usually takes the united states a couple of years to process these visas. and the state department has tried to surge resources to put into this, to get some of these afghan

many of us are waiting for that. i have many friends and honestly family members who were infected by covid prior to being able to be vaccinated who are still experiencing symptoms. my own sister still can't smell more than six months after catching covid at work. so, it is a very real concern, and we just don't know with these breakthrough infections yet whether those long covid symptoms happen or not. i can only guess that they will. i mean, we're reporting viral loads in vaccinated people who catch covid that are similar to the viral loads in unvaccinated people, and it's that viral load that's going to cause the immune response and then potentially cause long covid symptoms. but that's a guess. we're waiting on data still. >> what's happening in your area and your e.r.? >> so, i'm heading into the e.r. after i get off with you this afternoon. we are definitely seeing an increase in cases locally despite our excellent statewide vaccination rates. there are, of course, still communities and pockets that are not vac

thank you for joining us. let me broaden the conversation now and bring in a primary care physician and public health specialist, and also the associate professor of infectious diseases at emory university. it's great to have you both. dr. kelley, the cdc is saying with the new data, the war has changed. first, your reaction to what we're learning about the delta variant. >> well, i think that's exactly what's happened. the science has shown us new information. and things have changed. cdc is having to go back and say that masks probably are very important in indoor settings for all people, including vaccinated people. because of the data coming out of the barn stable outbreak that we just heard about and data from other countries, things aren't quite as safe to go back to life as we knew it back in 2019. we do still have to be careful. but the message is still that the vaccines are the very best tool that we have to prevent hospitalizations and death, and they still work really, really well. so i think for mo

mother nature told us this over and over again. with each wave of go ko vid, this thing is going to accelerate with catastrophic consequences. >> i want to emphasize your point. i'm showing national averages when i show the numbers. it's different the disparities by region. this map helps with that. in 30 states, less than half the population is fully vaccinated. you see a lot of them are down here in the south. arkansas 36%. louisiana 37%. 34% in alabama. 39% in georgia. schools are about to reopen here. if you have not received a vaccine, look at these numbers. in states where you have more than 50 % of the population vaccinated, on average five people per 100,000 people in the hospital. in states where the vaccination rate is below 50%, the numbers are three times that. the numbers don't lie. and yet, there's still a lot of vaccine hesitancy out there. >> yeah. and, again, this is why the president's out there, why you see the surgeon general out there. it's why i'm out here. we're doing everything we can to get this message hom

what more could you tell us. >> reporter: well the head of school just chatted with us. there are now a few more cases that originally reported so it is a handful of positive test cases. most of the employees who tested positive were not vaccinated. one of them one. now he said, he told the atlanta journal constitution that one-third of the kids eligible for a vaccine, that is 12 and up, are actually vaccinated but very tough to manage this in a situation where so many children are not eligible for the vaccine. so you have more than a hundred students in quarantine. and we did speak to one parent and child who attends the school and the student is frustrated because she just got back to in-person learning. >> i feel like they should not have everybody back inside of the school. because they could catch it too. >> i feel mad. at same time i don't because i don't want to catch it and i feel mad because i just got inside and i just spent money on my stuff. and, yes, and it is like, we're not even going to use it no more. >> reporter: he dad said he isn't that surprised that
